Caution: My word vomit follows below, based on my experience today returning to the game after nearly a year away.
So I came back to the game for the first time since pre 6.1 and I'm just a little overwhelmed and it's been confusing to get going again without consulting a bunch of guides on wowhead, etc. I mean, I guess that's the way it's always been after being absent from the game for awhile, but maybe I just don't have the patience for it anymore...? Worse yet, as I embark on the various things, I'm finding myself a bit bored by what's on offer.
I started putting together a list in my head of all the major things I should do to get caught up and see/experience the best content, and here's where things have gone so far:
- Tanaan; figured a big new Timeless-style zone would be engaging and exciting, but after questing in it for 30-40 mins. I'm bored stiff. Breadcrumb quests and kill quests. I don't know how many more of these I can do, and I haven't even touched the dailies yet that I apparently need to do as part of the larger flying meta achievement.
- Shipyard/Naval Missions; had to begin this to get to Tanaan. It really is just Garrisons round 2. There isn't anything engaging or exciting about it so far. Admittedly, I've only gone on like 3 or 4 missions, but is it really just the same thing again? Find the right set of traits, then counter the enemy threat and click/wait, rinse/repeat?
- Harrison/6.1 Garrison changes; I can't find Harrison. Guess I'm SOL until he shows up to start sending me out into the world to do things? I should probably find a friend who has him to invite me to his/her Garrison, yeah?
- Flying/Meta Achievement; kill me. So I have to:
1. Explore all of Draenor - should be easy enough if a bit time consuming. I think I uncovered most of it via initially leveling.
2. Loremaster it up - complete all the story quest chains. This I don't mind, and I only have one zone (Gorgrond) left to plow through. Levelling was the best part of WoD so I'm strangely looking forward to revisiting the zones where that excitement happened.
3. Master Treasure Hunter - thank goodness I already have this done.
4. Complete 12 Apexis Dailies - UGH. Those horrible daily 'kill everything in this area' quests that you have to compete with 50 other people for? And I only have 4/12 done...
5. Revered with 3 factions I've never heard of - barf. Here we go again. Bunch of dailies. Someone tell me these quests are actually interesting instead of just being kill/collect...? What happened to all those fun quest variants over the years (vehicles, bombing runs, escorts, etc.) - why aren't those ever what the dailies are based on? I mean, I haven't done them yet for these 3 factions so I don't know. I'm just not optimistic...
This is the one big thing I want to do, to make Draenor levelling more fun and quick for alts above 90. But according to wowhead it's gated behind roughly 3 weeks of waiting and daily logging in, which I probably won't be able to do for closer to 2 months...
Overall, it was frustrating coming back to 6.2 and tryin to get excited by the content, and not being annoyed that the fun I'm trying to get to is still weeks away...
I might forget all this for now and go back to the meat of the combat in the game, with heroics, LFR, and PVP. Somehow I feel as though I should do all of the above to appropriately gear for the combat, though. Will I get laughed out of most groups if I'm only about 430-450?
Also, given the weekend bonus, I think I might try pet battles in earnest for the first time.
What I dig is the Heirloom/Level 1 mount changes - that shit's cool. Firing up new level 1 alts and soaring through old familiar, nostalgic content is kind of sweet.
