WoD was an expansion that they gave up on right about the time they finished it. So much is clearly missing from WoD it's ridiculous. They said that because people liked Timeless Isle they were modeling a lot of it after that, but none of the Timeless Isle-style gear catch-up stuff showed its face until Tanaan Jungle, which was supposed to be in the game on release.
Very true.
It still angers me, the whole basing stuff off the Timeless Isle thing. They should've seen why it was "popular" (and honestly I'd say it wasn't really that popular). It was a very small location overall so everything was very condensed, it had two world bosses regularly present, it had the catch-up mechanic, and above all else it was different. It wasn't something that had legs beyond the end of the expansion. Basing content, and end-game content too, on it was such a dumb idea. Say what you will about dailies, they do tend to keep people in and let you progress at a decent pace. Yeah, some will chafe about being "gated" but
that's part of the point of an MMO in the first place. If players aren't gated, aren't led by a carrot-on-a-stick, they aren't gonna stick around.
And lo-and-behold, that's what happened. Of course, that wasn't the only reason people bailed (though it was definitely the reason why I bailed. I have to admit I felt kinda bad because I had literally just received the bronze statue for 10 years of subscribing and then like a week later burn out and go "yeah bye") but it sure as hell didn't help.
Its typical Blizzard, they overreact way too far. I love dailies, and I'll admit they went overboard in MoP, but they then over corrected themselves to the Timeless Isle and what we got with the apexis thing in WoD.
At the least, the world quest stuff looks a lot better.
