Worst Oscar Snub Ever?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Titanic over LA Confidential i think has to be the worst.

Other notables

English Patient over Shawshank Redemption
Not nominating Hoop Dreams
No best picture for Fellowship of the ring.
no nominations for Jim Carrey for Truman Show

any others?

They held back with Fellowship to give it to Return of the King. I didn't mind that.

Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction. Thankfully, time has sorted out which is the more memorable, and better, of the two.

Hail to the KING baby
English Patient over Shawshank Redemption

Yup. I remember I was so pissed when this happened. But I was also happy for it just to be nominated because honestly not that many people had heard about it at the time (certainly not for an Oscar-contender and the classic it would become in many peoples' minds). It's funny because no one gives two shits about English Patient now, but Shawshank still lives on as many peoples' favorite movie

More like Forrest Gump over Shawshank Redemption.

Wait, Pulp Fiction didn't get Best Picture? WTF?

You can hate Tarantino, and he HAS done a lot of crap, but Pulp Fiction is bloody fucking genius.

In Front and Drawing Away
As good (amazing, really) as Ordinary People was, Raging Bull is one of the best films ever made - period.

wow Gump beat out both Pulp Fiction and SHawshank REdemption.

Gump is good and all but cmon !!!

English patient beat out Fargo.

Do the Oscars really have any credibility in the first place? Shit, their choices are almost never based upon the quality of the film. Nine times out of ten their choices are made to make up for previous mistakes or to make a political statement. Plus, there's almost zero qualifications for being admitted to the Academy. Denis Leary is a member for Christ's sake.

In most recent memory, Sean Penn over Johnny Depp was pretty fucking horrible.

'course, Depp's going to pick up a golden statue this year as an apology. :p

edit: let's look at the past few years, shall we?

2003: Chicago
Apologetic award put towards a musical for the past year.

2002: A Beautiful Mind
Horrible movie in all aspects--Gosford Park and/or Moulin Rouge! were far more deserving than the heap of made-for-tv-whitewashed BM the winner was.

2001: Gladiator
I'm still calling bullshit on this one, as Gladiator was a mediocre film with a great production around it.

2000: American Beauty
Average movie that tries to make a worthwhile observation, and completely robbed the Green Mile.

1999: Shakespeare in Love
I can't really argue much with this one.

1998: Titanic
Who really gives a fuck about this movie anymore? Honestly? Although debatable, the one that should have won was Boogie Nights.

1997: The English Patient
Same feeling as Titanic! Can anyone explain why the stronger film, Jerry MacGuire didn't win? Weak year all-around, but jeez.

1996. Braveheart
Decent enough film, but this was also the year that included Casino, Leaving Las Vegas, and The Usual Suspects. Amazingly, all of those latter films were left out of the best picture noms.

1995. Forrest Gump
I really like Forrest Gump, I admit. I also admit that it's fucking madness to say that it fairly beat Pulp Fiction and the Shawshank Redemption.

1994. Schindler's List
I...kind of agree. Not a film I liked much, but eh.

1993. Unforgiven
I can dig this pick, but Al Pacino winning an Oscar for his role in Scent of a Woman over Denzel in Malcolm X isn't even cool.

1992. Silence of the Lambs
Great pick, yet again. Screwjob this year goes to Jack Palance winning an award for City Slickers.

1991. Dances with Wolves
Dunno what happened here, I can only guess that Goodfellas' votes were pulled away a bit by Godfather 3. Just thank god Dick Tracy won the art awards this year, or else it would have been real shitty.

And that's a wrap! Or something.

Also of note: 1990 had Driving Miss Daisy beating out Born on the Fourth of July. That's wrong on so many levels.

As much as I can't stand Penn, he deserved that oscar for Mystic River.

Uhhh...he is? I think Leo's performance was better than his anyways, but Foxx is winning the thing.

Plus, I preferred Murray's career revitalizing performance in LiT than that of Depp's anyways, as much as I enjoyed Pirates.

The Oscars do lots of stupid shit, like sleeping on an actor's best performance and then giving him/her an award later on. Russel Crowe immediately comes to mind- he was so much better in LA Confidential than anything he's done since. So does Denzel Washington- sure he won the best supporting actor Oscar for Glory, but he deserved a best actor Oscar for Malcolm X, not Training Day. I'm sure Bill Murray and Paul Giamatti will "benefit" from this practice down the road. And same for directors, The Aviator was crap but Scorcese will win just because he hasn't yet. Hollywood is such shit. Lots of actors also get awards for "political" reasons, i.e. Halle Berry a couple years ago.

But my personal worst snubs as far as not being nominated are Bill Murray for Rushmore and Paul Giamatti for Sideways. As far as nominated and not winning? Scorcese for director a couple times, Raging Bull for best picture, Pulp Fiction for best picture, and Goodfellas for best picture.

Rocky and Taxi Driver are both classics, they both deserved an Oscar. Apocalypse Now is overrated.

I think the Scorsese snubs for Raging Bull and Goodfellas are the biggest crime commited by the academy in recent times. Some will disagree with me, but I think Scorsese is arguably the best American filmmaker working today--you would think that the most significant awards for film would acknowledge this.

I don't know enough about movies to know if this qualifies as one of the "Worst ever," but I really really feel like Sean Astin shoul dhave got a supporting actor nomination for RotK.

2000: American Beauty
Average movie that tries to make a worthwhile observation, and completely robbed the Green Mile.

...Yeah, I think I'm just going to avoid movie threads here for a little while.

"From Dusk Till Dawn" I think is probably a bad movie (but enjoyable is a schlocky kind of way).

But Tarantino did also write "True Romance", which is a very good film.

The Academy tends to favor "epic" historical films. Dances With Wolves (which I think is a great film), Titanic, and Gladiator benefitted from that.

Tom Cruise should've won Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia. Michael Caine was good in Cider House Rules, but that's as far as the performance went. Cruise, on the other hand, was brilliant as TJ Mackey. The interview scene alone should've won him that award.

So, essentially your favorite movies didn't win. I know there have been travesties but not because things like Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption didn't win. I enjoyed those movies, but they are your typical award show candidates.

:)

Don't worry, it's just Matlock. He's not very good at this whole good taste thing.

I'm gonna second some prior sentiments... I'm convinced some of you fellas need to stick to the Gaming Forum ;)

Something I think you need to realize is that there is a lot more that goes into a Best Picture nod than simply acting. While I certainly agree there have been some wonderful "screw-jobs" over the years... it's hard for me to swallow how hard some of you are coming down on EVERY film picked for best picture.

The Academy loves to award its actors. However you feel like interpretting this statement is probably correct.

What I find most disturbing is the fact that there has not been a single consistent actress in years... as far as the academy is concern (winning wise... I'm not talking about nominating). I think Swank is finally coming into her own... she's certainly no Kathy Bates or Meryl Streep (two actresses I simply adore) but I think once she wins this Oscar she might be seen in the same breath as them.

Titanic was a terrible movie. :)

My thoughts exactly. Goodfellas is the most robbed film since the 80s, for me. And, well, Gladiator sucked. But Schindler's List is easily on the top 5 films of the 90s and Penn is an incredibly great actor.

You are right, sir.
