Would it be a good idea for Sony to buy Capcom for over $1.1 billion?

...or at least acquire them in a way that they did with Square back during the PS1 era?

In light of them going exclusively with PS4 for Street Fighter V, it at least means they are both on good terms.

Popular franchises gained would include:

- Resident Evil
- Monster Hunter (forgot this one - duh)
- Dino Crisis (lol)
- Megaman
- Street Fighter
- Dead Rising
- Breath of Fire
- Final Fight
- Ace Attorney
-Ghost and Goblins
-Devil May Cry
-Dragon's Dogma

Pros:
- Possibly alleviate some of Capcom's financial troubles (i.e. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/capcom-revenue-and-profit-fall-due-to-lack-of-new-/1100-6423243/)
- Sony gets exclusives that are guaranteed to sell

Cons:
- Many fans of Capcom games will have to buy a PS4 which obviously will cut into profit, although seeing how Capcom is making SFV exclusive they're willing to bet on that...

I think you left off the most important franchise they would gain, Monster Hunter

If Sony had plans to release another handheld it could make sense. Without it though I'm not sure
 
Hey, if it means bringing Breath of Fire back to consoles, I'm all for it to be honest.
 
No:

1.) They cost $1.1 billion.

2.) They're really not going anywhere marketshare wise.

3.) Sony's already extracting a large portion of their value through significantly cheaper means.
 
I doubt Sony would be able to afford buying them. Even with their management ineptitude, Capcom's brand is still pretty big, particularly with Monster Hunter and Resident Evil.
 
There are so many better ways Sony could spend $1 billion dollars.

They could:

- Open 5 new game studios
- Invest in the Playstation 5 hardware
- Invest in Project Morpheus
- Secure third party exclusives
- Throw a pizza party

And still have tons of money left over.

This seems fairly accurate. I dont see what they would gain by buying them as well. Assuming they retained full market value, which they wouldnt, they would need to seel like 50 million games exclusively just to recoup the purchase price... Sony just cant afford that.
 
Sony can't afford Capcom. They are shutting down and selling parts of themselves just to stay afloat, and their credit is listed as "junk" by almost every major creditor. I hate to say it, but I would be shocked if Sony is still around in 10 years.

Why would Sony want to carry on Capcom's burdens when they barely have any buildings left?

Capcom may be in the toilet, but they aren't about to be flushed down yet. If anything, Sony would just buy certain IPs from Capcom, not the whole company
 
Honestly I have Capcom on my list of publishers that won't survive the generation. So no. If Sony wants any of their IPs I say wait until they go under and get them for much cheaper.(See THQ)

No clue. Always viewed this mentality as one pertaining to fanboys.
 
Only if they had people ready to go into that company with a healthy knowledge of the current gaming climate and cleaned house on the executive level. Its worth it if they plan on having those team create content. It's not worth if it they just want to buy a bunch of old IP's that no one under the age of 21 knows about.
 
Buying Capcom outright wouldn't make much financial sense for Sony, but if Capcom ever goes the route of THQ and their IPs get auctioned off, Sony should definitely try to acquire a few of them and see what their 1st party studios could do with them. I would love to see a Studio Japan developed MH, Ace Attorney, or Breath of Fire. Or a Guerrilla Games' take on Resident Evil. Or a Santa Monica's re-imagining of DMC.
 
best thing that would happen would be if Koei bought them out like they did with tecmo, at least that way koei could be fine with whatever number Sengoku basara would get in the west.
 
Should Sony buy Capcom for $1.1 billion? Absolutely not.

Should Sony wait until Capcom collapses from mismanagement and pick the juiciest bits off its corpse? Hell yes.
