Would it be a good idea for Sony to buy Capcom for over $1.1 billion?

Uhhh if anything Capcom will buy Sony

lol you do realize that Capcom is a company with less than 3000 employees and Sony is a company of 140,000+ employees right? Capcom's revenue (not net income) for the entire 2014 was $240m. Sony's market cap is $31 billion. In what world does Capcom have the assets to buy Sony?

It was a joke

Because of where Monster Hunter is popular and how the game plays. Splintering the fanbase to multiple platforms makes no sense.

Still the worst argument in the world when we have online play. Other popular LANing games like fighting games have no problems 'splintering the fanbase' rofl

Anyway I doubt Sony could afford this.

Sony can't afford Capcom. They are shutting down and selling parts of themselves just to stay afloat, and their credit is listed as "junk" by almost every major creditor. I hate to say it, but I would be shocked if Sony is still around in 10 years.

Haha

No lol.

Capcom just aren't worth that much money. They don't really have that big money franchise that Sony should go after. Resident Evil isn't it. For a billion, I'm talking more GTA/COD like sales.

Sony didn't 'acquire' Squaresoft, they bought shares in them (and sold them last year). They could certainly do that with Capcom, and for all we know they may have.

It doesn't make business sense for Sony to waste money on outright 'buying' Capcom, much less while they're still a self-sufficient company. If Sony was going to ever attempt to lay their hands on Capcom assets, they'd wait until Capcom went under and enter the inevitable bidding war.

Sony isn't that well on money, at least the last time I checked. They should try to fix their own infrastructure (online) and get better profits from divisions that are currently underperforming, before spending a shitload of cash on a crap company like Capcpom.

Sony has $2.4 billion in cash lying around. And that's just cash.

If they really wanted to, they could definitely afford Capcom at $1.1 billion.

But SHOULD they buy Capcom? Hell no.

Haha

I'm not sure how that has any relation to what I stated that you quoted. I love Naughty Dog, and Uncharted 4 is one of the big reasons I bought a PS4, but I didn't like TLOU, correct.

Would you like to comment on the actual facts I mentioned, or just take stabs at me for having an opinion that differs from the norm some more?

I'm well aware of Sony's financials, which means I am also aware of the fact that they have been hemorrhaging money for the last 6 years or so. That $2.4 billion isn't going to last long at the rate they have been posting losses. This isn't an attack on the Playstation brand by any means. Sony as a company, is hurting severely, and the Playstation brand won't be able to keep them afloat. I truly expect Sony to sell off Sony Pictures to someone (Probably Disney) in the next 2 years.

You sure about that? Why wouldn't they just release it on every platform then and maximize the earning potential?

The extra sales they'd gain in non-Japanese territories by putting the game on multiple consoles probably wouldn't be worth it compared to the increased cost.

If you could get 90 percent of your potential sales just by putting the game out on 3DS, and 100 percent by putting it out on EVERYTHING, you'd be a damn fool to spend all that extra money on making an HD console version of that game.

Monster Hunter is a historically portable franchise. The people who play Monster Hunter are willing to play it on a handheld. Why throw money down the drain?

Sony might not be in a position to buy capcom, or to do much at all. But they willl be around in 10 years. No matter what happens the sony brand must surely still be strong enough that Sony and some of many of its products will keep going.

Haha

How is that relevant at all.

ok sure but what about the order 1886

Since we're on the subject, is there any reason why Sony would be more likely to do it than Nintendo? I know why Nintendo won't do it (conservative with cash, don't like giant expansions, poor investment), but from what I know they have more to gain from a hypothetical acquisition than Sony does. Mostly securing Monster Hunter for good and getting more staff and IP's to make up for their lack of third party support. Plus I think they have a bit more cash on hand than Sony.

Again, not saying Nintendo should do it, but does Sony have greater reasons or means to do it than Nintendo? Honest question.

Sony can't afford Capcom, shocked if Sony is not around in 10 years...

It's not a joke post, is it? :(

I dunno. Capcpom seems to be a better fit at Microsoft. They do have similar franchise management methodologies - both suck to be precise.

They both don't deserve Capcom as a company. But they do deserve their IPs

Nintendo
-Irrelevant Man
-Viewtiful Joe
-Okami
-Ace Attorney
-Ghost and Goblins

Sony
-Resident Evil
-Devil May Cry
-Dragon's Dogma
-Breath of Fire
-Sengoku Basara

Both of them can duke it over MH

I don't want to see SF land in the hands of one them. I'd rather see it go to ArcSys or SNK

And the excuse for Sony's platforms is?
Vita has a case for MH, but the PS4 doesn't

What about it? I haven't played it yet, so I have no verdict to give to it. It looks absolutely gorgeous, but almost every impression I've heard from those who have played it says that it's an incredibly uninspired(gameplay wise, not artistically) cover-based 3rd person shooter, and boring. However, as I said, I haven't played it yet, so I won't judge it until I do.

Bloodborne looks fantastic, though. I can't wait to get my hands on that.

rolling eyes.

Does Sony even have 1.1bn to be spending on another first party developer?

If it's for the franchises I'd rather they keep investing in new stuff than having their other first part studios working on Capcom Ip's

There are so many better ways Sony could spend $1 billion dollars.

They could:

- Open 5 new game studios
- Invest in the Playstation 5 hardware
- Invest in Project Morpheus
- Secure third party exclusives
- Throw a pizza party

And still have tons of money left over.

A pizza party? Who's getting fired?

Edit: beaten. Fire me at a bowling alley. :(

I swear this thread existed not too long ago.

It's such a dumb idea to buy Capcom. Why would they pay $1.1 billion for an entire company when they can just buy the rights to the IPs that Sony is actually interested in doing something with.

Even if Sony did have the money to waste (They don't), why is it a good idea for them to spend 1.1 billion to buy Capcom?

Like, there's not even any real benefit to it. Capcom's not raking in the moolah. A few once-popular IPs don't justify an expenditure like that. Their most successful franchise is handheld-based, which is at complete odds with how Sony's strategy.

what if sony bought microsoft

What if Capcom bought Sony?

What if sega bought sony

What if Sony bought Nintendo and then Microsoft bought Sony

What if the moon secured payment for the conclusion of it's endentured servitude to the earth and then just flew off in to space to chill with Jupiter? And then bought Sony?

What if we all pitch in $20 and bought Capcom together?

What if Nintendo bought the Seattle Mariners?
... wait.

They are probably already in R&D for the revision of not the 5

Pros:
- Sony gets exclusives that are guaranteed to sell

Great point. I think Sony should do this assuming they have the money to burn.

Cons:
- Many fans of Capcom games will have to buy a PS4 which obviously will cut into profit, although seeing how Capcom is making SFV exclusive they're willing to bet on that...

Well, considering the fact that everyone will have to buy a PS4 to enjoy all of Capcoms million selling franchises, I would actually classify this as a Pro if I were honest. That said, this sounds like a wonderful strategy.

...or at least acquire them in a way that they did with Square back during the PS1 era?

In light of them going exclusively with PS4 for SFV, it at least means they are both on good terms.

Popular franchises gained would include:

- Resident Evil
- Dino Crisis (lol)
- Megaman
- Street Fighter
- Dead Rising
- Breath of Fire
- Final Fight

Pros:
- Possibly alleviate some of Capcom's financial troubles (i.e. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/capcom-revenue-and-profit-fall-due-to-lack-of-new-/1100-6423243/)

Discuss!
