Mrbob said:Hmm, that sucks. I noticed EBGAMES is selling the regular version and special edition for the same price.
Copy protection is gonna kill the PC industry. It does more harm than good. It penalizes the legitimate buyers and the "pirates" (har har) will get their copy anyway. Someone needs to get a no DVD/CD crack out soon.

Unison said:Pirates is more of a strategy game than a "good long game". You can certainly play for a long time, but it's kind of like the Civ. games where half the fun is just replaying it.
Unison said:$50.
Willco said:Fuck that shit.
Mrbob said:Yeah, I know. It is hard to justify spending 50 dollars on a PC game nowadays since there is so much BS that occurs upon release. Might as well wait two weeks when the game is down to 30 dollars and a patch is out that fixes the problem with not being able to play the game.

my game won't launch, either. "unable to authenticate original disc within time limit."Unison said:I called Atari. They are aware of the problem, but there's no fix as of yet. They had me e-mail them a log file. :lol
What a fun game!
Musashi Wins! said:The DVD looked cool though. Has the original on it as well...which frankly isn't that big a deal. Kind of wish I bought that instead of Half-Life, which is no dig at that game but a measure of my feeling for the series.
Where is Bjork? He must be playing this!

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Hi All,
I had this same problem, but I have found a solution that I will share now. This worked for me, but no guarantees it will work for you. It appears that this is a problem of the drive speed being too fast. My DVD drive is the Plextor 12X DVD+R and it reads at 16x. I downloaded Nero's Drivespeed app (free) and lowered the read speed to 12x and the game loaded fine (also worked at 8x). Unfortunately, you need to load this app every time and minimize it while the game runs, but I did not notice any performance issues. There may be other apps out there that yield the same results.
It appears that this same problem cropped up on the Half Life 2 DVD as well (if that makes you feel better). I think this is pretty crappy though; another case of copy protection affecting those that bought the game legally. I'll be calling support for a real answer, and I encourage the rest of you to do the same. We need to let them know that this is not OK. The piraters will continue to get around these efforts, and the problems for legit customers will only get worse. At some point it will be easier to pirate the games than buy them (and in some cases it already is).
Here is one location you can get Drivespeed, or you can Google it.

Good luck!

Give me a break.
Ah, I see. Still ridiculous. I just recently upgraded my computer and hearing all these stories are bringing back some bad memories.Unison said:No, it seems that it's just shitty copy protection causing the issue.... Business as usual.
Biff Hardbody said:Its either this game or Rome: Total War for me. I'd like to buy it tomorrow and have something to play while I chill and eat hearty. I almost bought Pirates tonight.
Hope you guys get your game going, sounds like a total pain.
