Wow. Pirates is out?! Anyone pick this game up yet?

So does the original version of the game on the DVD Special edition work in XP?

Whats the other extra stuff like? (photos would be nice)

It comes out december 3rd in the uk which makes me think because thats 3 days before i get KOTOR2 :D

I'll try installing it on my roommate's laptop, which doesn't have DVD burning capabilities of any kind...

suikodan: do you have a DVD burning drive or just a normal DVD-Rom?

Yeah I'm debating between this two as well since I just finished HL2 (Go read the official thread and help me figure out the story! :lol). On Friday morning EB is going to have Rome for 30 bucks so that sounds like a great deal. Or maybe I'll get Vampire? I dunno! MGS3 is the next full plate meal for me, so maybe I should just finish that first? :lol

I'm in the same boat. I just finished HL2, amazing game. Now I want something I can just chill and play while I eat this thanksgiving. Pirates sounds really good, but I think I'm leaning towards Rome. Especially with that great EB offer (thanks btw). I played the demo of Rome tonight, and it was allot of fun. Not twitchy and based on whos fastest, that's always ruined RTS's for me. It seems more based on actual strategy. Plus is has War Elephants!!!

Check it out if you haven't already. I'm rereading old threads on the game here, and it sounds epic. Unless Pirates gets some amazing impressions, I'll probably buy it and a copy of Plutarchs account on Alexander with the money I save from the Friday sale. That book and this game should go well together.

Bleh, sorry to hear you fellas are still stuck with copy protection crap. That sucks. Kinda pathetic when you can't play the 'limited, premium edition' of a game due to such things.

Divided the plunder after a few good cruises and I'm up to Adventurer difficulty. The game is much harder than it was starting out- definately ramped up toughness. Seems like the early difficulty steps are there so you can get a feel for the mechanics, upgrade your ship, and tool around a little before things get juicy. It does give you the option to stay at a difficulty level instead of advancing, which is nice. At adventurer I get schooled during duels if I'm not carefull, and the dancing minigame is trickier.

Neat ship battle story; I close in on a Trading Galleon off the town of Caracas, certain my Brig can take her easily. Couple of passes and I've raked her good a few times, start coming round to board, and wham; a War Galleon loaded up with cannon and crew comes charging in from the right and unloads on me at point blank range (blowing scads of my crew into the water- the game shows this as little guys flying off your ship into the drink, hilarious)..... I turn to flee, the galleon catches me, game loads with 'prepare to repel boarders'.... of course I lose the duel 'cause the bastard pulped half my crew and I'm too pissed to duel effectively. Essentialy, the war galleon was nearby when I attacked the trade galleon, and ended up coming in as an escort. Sucks for me, but neat nonetheless :D

anyone who's having trouble with the dvd version, download this. it's that nero drive speed app, but this one works with dvd drives as well as cd. i set mine to 12x and the game finally loads.

According to the readme, the Win Pirates Gold! should work in XP, of course you will need to right-click on the .exe and use "compatible mode" and "run in 256 colors"

The extra stuff is all on the DVD, you have an EXTRA folder with extra pictures, concept images and some custom "Skins" for the game.

I like it so far. It's exactly like the old versions except that the presentation is much better. When you battle against an enemy captain, the fights are animated in 3D (for some reasons, I always think of POP:WW in those scenes) and everything is exagerated for a good laugh.

The ship battles are almost the same except you can fight more than one ship. You can also select different kind of bullets.

The treasure hunts are much easier (at leat in Apprentice mode) because the maps show a lot of references which you can see when you're ashore.

I don't dig the Dance minigame much though...

Oh man, I got to wait for December 3rd to pick this puppy up :|

One thing I've not seen mentioned, have they included the old "retirement" option which used to grade your success (or failure) and then detailed your old age in dire poverty? (Or at least thats the only result *I* used to get, varying grades of poverty....)

I finally got it working. I had to exit out of drivespeed after enabling it though to trick my drive into working.

I agree w/ suikodan. The dance minigame is a bore, but otherwise it really has the old-school feel of Pirates!. I am not quite sold on the way the characters talk like Sims but otherwise the presentation is top-notch.

I'll play a while longer & post more impressions.

Swordfights just rule. The cinematic camera and whatnot are awesome w/o stealing the feel that it's interactive.

i'm very interested in wiping out the dutch, but i don't understand how to attack an enemy town. seems that i'm only allowed to do so occasionally.

does anyone know the criteria?

I couldn't attack any towns when I played. I can't help here.

The game stopped running on my system again... :lol

It must have been a fluke that I got it to work that once. I played a good 3-4 hours. I got ranked as the #5 best pirate.

I guess I will wait for a patch to play more.

It's definitely a worthwhile for those on the fence. You can have fun in a 1/2 hour session or a 5 hour one.

The dancing minigame has improved in my eyes now that I watch the woman's hand gestures and not the keypad in the corner.

Swordfights are still the real highlight.

The original Pirates! was one of my favorite childhood memories. I wish the X-Box version would come out sooner, though, as I'd rather play it on there than my underpowered laptop.

Yep, that's in there. It grades you on total gold and land acquired, maximum rank with various nations, romantic success, treasure found, Top Ten Pirates defeated, family rescued, and a few other things. Feels just like the original for the most part.

The dancing minigame is still irritating after a bunch of hours put into it, but it definately gets easier once you start learning the hand signals, instead of watching for flashing buttons.

Still very satisfying to win a duel when your opponent's crew outnumbers you significantly.

I didn't realize there was an Xbox version coming out... which leads to a question for those who have it: is there any reason, in terms of interactivity and fun, that the Xbox version should be particularly neutered? I'm a good PC upgrade away from any success in playing, I think, so maybe that version would be the way to go.

Then again, I might be upgrading anyhow for "The Movies" (in which I have zero console faith) so maybe it won't be an issue... still, it's an interesting option.

Actually, I think the game might be better- from an interface perspective- on the xbox. The control scheme seems well suited to a gamepad; the keypad-mouse combo is rather awkward at times. I think you could fit all the necessary functions on the controller S, and the analog sticks would mesh well with the fighting and sailing mechanics. I guess the console port is supposed to have more action ellements in the swordfighting too, and that's one of the best parts.

IAWTP. Pirates! Gold was easy to control on the Genesis. There's no reason the Xbox port should suck. Maybe I'll end up getting that one too if I can't get this to run on my PC by May. :D

Unless the Xbox version supports custom soundtracks for the dancing portion :D I'd recommend getting the PC rev.

Help! Any way to improve my guys health? His health has been poor for several years now, and recently it changed to the status of "failing".. What to do, he's only 36 years old (yes, I know people back then didnt live for as long as today)..

I dont want him to die yet, he's doing great.. The 3rd most notorius priate, he has made some 136055 gold coins and has married a woman, he's also a duke.

There's an item you can obtain (medicinal herbs, I think?) that will help stave off the effects of aging. I'm not sure if there is anything that can reverse the process, however.

How do you do the custom dancing music? I don't see how... :-/

Arrrgh!! :D

This game is as addictive as the old one, hands down.

I have been playing as a "nice" pirate, trying to win the favor of the nations, so I still haven't attacked any cities yet. I've been focused on being the #1 pirate. I've slain most of my competition. :lol

Anyone able to compare this to the original in terms of how long it takes to progress, etc.? Is it "faster" than the original? One thing I hoped it retained is that ability to have a pretty long career and just kinda let things slowly develop if you want.

I keep turning in my wealth to appease my crew, who grows tired of sailing with me after a while at sea. Is there a way to avoid this? I don't mind, but it would be cool to have a fat bankroll.

It seems a tiny bit faster, but that is probably because I am being very aggressive. I am not really focusing on trading or changing the balance of power. There is an absolutely huge amount of stuff to do in the game, so you can theoretically play forever.

Also, I should admit that I am on the easiest difficulty level. I'm sure progression isn't as rapid on the harder ones!

Ok that sounds good.

It's crazy how under-the-radar this game is. It's seemingly a solid update to one of the most beloved, classic games in PC history and yet it seems like it's getting almost no hype. Maybe bringing out the X-Box version at the same time would have made things better. God, I hope it's a good port...

What's so great about it is that it's never, ever stressful (at least on easy). The bright graphics, the simple controls and the constant progress that you make conspire to make it the feel-good game of the year! :D

Sailing against the wind sucks though. :(

Anyone else think it's just ridiculously slow? Any way to speed it up or something? If you end up far West, you're looking at a very painful trip back East.

Errr, did you forget about the Song of Winds? Just take out the Baton, and flick that li'l stick!!

Flick it! Flick it! Flick it! YEAH!

Hahaha I remember in the first Pirates! when you engaged a town and the wind was against you, you'd literally move backwards sometimes and there was nothing you could do about it. Good times. Really!

Where the hell is bjork, he was splooging over this game before it release and he hasn't stepped foot in this thread yet (I suppose he could be spending all of his time playing it). I picked my copy up today even tough I have about a 4 game backlog... this time of year is murder.

Suprisingly, this snuck right by me. I spent my money on those bemani imports last week, and I'm pretty much tapped out...

... though there *is* plastic still...

Also is there like a fansite I can get the lowdown on this game

I only ask for three games this xmas (since I bought gta sa, PM2, halo2 and hl2)

1Pirates
2Rome Total War
3MP2

Wow, installed it last night after work and wanted to try it out for a minute before supper and *poof* there goes 6 hours and suddenly it's midnight and I hadn't eaten yet. :D

Seems too easy at first when you're an apprentice pirate, but once you advance the challenge really starts. Lost my beloved frigate to a scurvy pirate who managed to board me, first and only time I was captured or defeated. :(

Oh, did I miss something or do I have to capture that same evil count over and over again to get pieces of the map to find my sister? I got him once, patted myself on the back and then suddenly ppl are telling me to track him down again to get more info about my family but I don't remember what happened to him after he gave me the map piece. Did I let him go? I gotta stop accidentally skipping cut scenes.

Also, still not loving the logs and the interface could be better for maps and stuff.

Calder, I've beaten up the count about five times now. I guess he has..remarkable powers of recuperation.

His buddy the Baron seems to have one, too.
