WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

I want a Product RED or whatever version of this phone.

I'm talking dimensions not material.

Oh, yeah I agree with you there. It'd be pretty slick if the screen were the same dimensions as the back plate.

What I suspect they do with this phone is release black and white, eventually do a RED, and then keep the same body for the 7th gen and give it 4 or 5 more colors.

That's actually a really good idea.

More "change how it looks just for the sake of it" talk. I love you, GAF.
LOL at a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" line of thought when it comes to design.

The iPhone design was originally derived from the brilliant, revolutionary iPod.

I don't see any iPod in this design. I see a weird, fan-fictiony "iPhone in 2025."

Will still buy. Might be my last iPhone if 2013 isn't a radical upgrade. Jelly Bean is so awesome while also being more open, I can't see iOS maintaining superiority forever. It's Windows vs. Mac all over again.

Looks like others at macrumors have come to the same conclusion I suggested earlier. It appears that the front and back panels in the photos aren't snugly attached. You can tell the screen is sticking out past the beveled outter rim more than it should. Should be super sexy.

Seems kind of early for this to be leaked, no?

Haha yeah along with the color Macbook Pros and iMacs.

Hell no this isn't Nokia.

Btw I was worried when I saw this pic, the front glass seemed a lot distant from the screen... while in the 4/4S they are laminated.

But then I noticed that the glass isn't properly assembled, the bottom isn't flush with the rim. Crisis averted!

I'm always surprised that apple didn't jump on the special edition bandwagon such as releasing various SE versions of the iphone within each new iteration of it.
Maybe to celebrate certain events such as the Olympics 2012 or Films like dark knight rises.

Exactly. It's going to be pretty thin. And don't forget it's supposed to be a new "in-cell" display with no touch layer.

This is Apple, not Burger King.

Edit: not sure if serious

I give them credit for not doing so

I think it looks great. The main distinction will be that the white will use a bright meal finish, while the black will have a dark metal. It will be two tone, but the two will look different.

Fantastic.

And camera placement not being in the middle of the glass? I don't mind. It makes the glass feel like part of the metal. If it were in the middle, it's like highlighting the panel as being separate. I like the asymmetry. Being in the centre looks worse, I reckon. Like you wouldn't want it centred along the horizontal axis, right?

But... Pray tell, what exactly is wrong with the design? I'd argue that the 4S and the HTC One X, as well as the white Galaxy SIII are the best phone designs in the industry right now, and the latter two are derivatives of older designs.

Seriously how many ways can you design a phone before it ends up being just a flat slab with a screen.

Actually, it was leaked a couple of months ago already.

Not sure why wouldn't I be. Seriously, not even the iPod classic in more than 10 years had colorful and cheerful versions, only limited but still sober editions.

Only the cheaper and smaller lines of iPods got colors.

The iPhone is up there with Apple's lines of products based around strong streamlined industrial design built in metal and glass. The colors are all neutral: white, black, metal grey and chrome. Sober, sophisticated and technological. Vivid colors don't fit at all.

Maybe someday if Apple introduces a cheaper line of iPhones, aimed at a broader demographic. Or if it radically changes its philosophy and design language.

as long as the apps remain vastly superior on iOS, which they factually are, it will always be hard to give up, despite jellybean being quite good (which I'm enjoying plenty on my nexus 7).

Am i the only one that hate that this is the longest length to width ratio phone out there?

When the 4/4S was 4:3 it had pretty much the same phone length to ratio as an android 16:9 phone. Now that its 16:9 the phone is even longer. The don't like the ratio. Reduce the top and bottom bezel some more please.

Next iPhone in translucid plastic confirmed.

Apple makes what they think they can sell. If they think they can maximize their profit by providing multiple colors, they will. They have a fairly sophisticated process of coloring anodized metals which this purported next gen iPhone happens to be made of. Not saying they will, but this new design does open a few more avenues for revenue than the current design.

I'm not saying that it's me who's gonna stop Apple from doing that. Apple could also have colored plastic during their glossy plastic era but they didn't, aside from black and white (a black iMac would have been kick-ass btw). So it's pretty much not about the tech but about the market and the perception Apple wants of their products.

Not to mention an exponentially higher number of SKUs keeps the costs higher, create stocking problems.

Besides, the cover market is there for that. I don't hate colors. I might like looking at a baby blue iPhone... for about a week. But then I'll need a new cover.

Coloured iPhones would be huge. It's completely untapped.
Not completely, it you mean coloured smartphones.

The Lumia900 is the best designed phone since the iPhone4.

What I hate about most other phones is the protruding camera. Or the way they put a chrome frame around it emblazoned with some form of marketing, like "8 megapixel".

Just make it a circle and don't frame it.

I think the aspect that bugs me the most is that the screen isn't flush with the bezel and still has the raised plastic border of the 4. even if the metal part had to be taller to accomodate I would prefer a flush mounting ala the ipad or the rear case on the new design.

The rear glass components are flush why not the front?

Look at the top and then at the bottom. At the top the glass is deeper inside the shell than at the bottom. So the thing is just not well assembled. I'm sure it's flush.

Agreed, it works with the iPhone 4/4S because the back plate sticks out too. Here it just looks weird, there's no symmetry.

Looks fantastic. And will probably remain the slickest phone design on the market, again. Centred camera position looks weird, though.

Put it in the cloud

I didn't realize I could record video directly to he cloud. Seems quite expensive to have to pay for the bandwidth and pay for the cloud storage too. It doesn't help that Apple upped the video recording to 1080p with no option to switch to 720p. Automatic four times the space being taken up with no choice to change it.

I think the cloud options come out cheaper than what would likely be paying $300 extra on top of the $199 two-year contract cost. Especially if you take music and photos out of the equation with the very cheap/free options you have for those. Higher-storage iPhones also have lower resale value.

$499 iPhone, and a 2-year contract, yikes.

I don't think we're going to get 128 gb until the iPad gets 128 gb anyway.

it's only a little more than double the bitrate, 11Mbps vs 24Mbps

http://www.imore.com/apple-iphone-5...ptember-12-iphone-5-release-date-september-21

iMore has heard that Apple is planning to debut the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, September 21. This information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.

The iPad mini will be announced at the same September 12 event, as will the new iPod nano.
We haven't heard a release date for the iPad mini yet, but it could be the same as the iPhone 5. It seems likely the new iPod touch will make an appearance on September 12 as well, though we haven't heard any specific information about that yet either.

iMore has been pretty accurate about pinpointing event dates.

Revealed the iPad 3 event date: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/13/ipad-3-announcement-on-march-7th-with-quad-core-and-4g-lte/
Revealed the iPhone 4S launch: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/12...5-launch-on-october-7th-no-ipad-3-until-2012/
I'd really like a nano with Pebble-like features.

That seems like quite a lot to announce for one day.

I'll take a charcoal iPhone over everything though, preferably not two tone and charcoal all over instead.
