WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

I don't get it. Minecraft is already on PS4 isn't it? What's the point of buying Mojang if they don't get Minecraft as an exclusive?

If all they were interested in was keeping Minecraft off of Sony platforms, they probably wouldn't need to buy all of Mojang.

Does this mean Microsoft gets the Minecraft merch rights too. I imagine they could easily get back all the money spent on Mojang from the merch sales.

Because he's rich as fuck.

He could leave and start a new company if he wanted, it's not like he's personally involved in their cash cow any more.

No way would Microsoft allow that. Part of the deal would be him staying on for X years and then signing a non-competitive agreement should he choose to leave after.

Say if this did happen would that mean minecraft being pulled from playstation and other non-microsoft platforms?

Also, I know it's huge but does it really make enough money to justify a $2b price tag?

2 billion dollars is too much imo. Unless they are sitting on another Minecraft style goldmine. Only studios like Blizzard have struck lightning multiple time like that however.
Well, they will fully own Mojang's IP after that.
And Minecraft still sells a lot nowaday.

I don't get the point of this move since the only worthwhile property is Minecraft, and that's already on your competitors machine.

Minecraft is still being updated. Frequently. With new DLC, too. I'm not saying that the entire $2 billion will be earned back in exclusive Minecraft DLC, but some of you guys may be underestimating how crazily succesful the game is.

They've sold 54 million copies of Minecraft. That makes it one of the most popular games ever: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/mi...es-nears-54-million-copies-sold/1100-6420724/

Welp, Nintendo really fucked up not getting Minecraft on their systems before this happens. Assuming this is even true (lots of doubt yet) and that MS would block Minecraft from going to other platforms in the future.

The success of Minecraft is the type of phenomenon that Nintendo has been chasing since the end of their NES days. It's a matter of shame to them at this point.

People understimate the value of a succesful IP. They are super popular with kids. They can make minecraft 2, exclusive for MS platforms. Minecraft sidescrollers, minecraft racing, etc.

Minecraft is equivalent of SMB for a new generation.

I don't understand it one way or another. Mojang doesn't need the money, and MS can't be sure they'll be able to produce successful new IPs. Minecraft may have legs, but it won't last forever.
At least Rare had a bunch of IPs and a huge team of talented devs.

I don't get it either. Does ms really think mojang is capable of another mine craft? Or can't they stop publishing ps versions of the game?

Are you an expert on matters of shame and honour? :p

Big rumors like this tend to be true more often than not, let's face it.

Makes no sense from MS' standpoint though IMO. I mean I know Minecraft sells like hotcakes, but you can't really turn it into a franchise.... can you?

Unless Microsoft is pursuing making a sequel to Minecraft or some other sort of major development with it, it seems like a waste.

Really hope this isn't true.

Not only would it mean the likely cancellation of the Vita port, Microsofts non-existent PC support would probably mean the death of the PC version too.

Doesn't anyone have the patience to not sell their startup company these days?

Shit's becoming so cyberpunk.
Why? Why would either party be willing?
1.) Microsoft would corner the youth demographic, the one demographic that they've had a hard time to get.

2.) Notch would be fucking loaded with all that dosh.

What's the strategic outlook here? Ride Minecraft's success out? Make sequels?

damn. seems like this should have been done a year ago. would have been cheaper and prevented the game from popping up everywhere under the sun.
Except on Nintendo hardware. 3DS and WiiU are litteraly the only current devices I can think of that don't have Minecraft.

No schadenfreude here, just the observation that short of a deal already in place with Mojang, they'll be missing out forever.
