WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Haha, I can see now you just want it to happen for some bizarre reason. I can read between the lines. But that's not how this works.

It's even more hilarious to imagine the logistics as well. You think they're going to go into stores and recall Minecraft PS4 and PS3 disc versions? They're going to stop people who own the game from playing it? Gonna be hilarious to see them explain how they're all supportive of gamers when they start that shit.

It's out there now. That ship has sailed.

Honestly, and this is not remotely a mark against Notch, but Minecraft is a very simple foundation. It would not remotely be hard to replicate that for a sequel and add some extra creative flexibility for a better game. Then you add some unique for Microsoft touches - like Halo skins and Sunset Overdrive skins and such - and you get an appealing sequel.

Eh. Minecraft isn't some genius, delicately designed game by any means.

There's a clear formula at work that can pretty easily be replicated and improved.

I dont think its a genius idea, Minecraft is kind of a mess of ideas, that just seem to work.

Sure they can replicate Minecraft, Project Spark is like a derivative of Minecraft, Sony even has there own thing. But I cant imagine Microsoft or any company not ruining it somehow, they would polish it(lens flares, shaders), give it a narrative, constrain it in some ways that might not appeal as much.

Hey Mojang, go die on a cactus you worthless POS company.

Way to wait until the game was finally released on Vita before sellig out like this and stopping to support the platform. Scared that your years of failing to put out a new game might have just bit you in the ass huh? Fuck you if you think I'm paying for this now after you sat on your thumb for literally YEARS waiting to port a 360 game to other platforms. That's going to hold up, right?Fucking sub-PS2 assets upscaled onto the PS4? You're a bunch of clowns. I take it as a personal insult that you mouthbreathers are allowed to make decisions with regards to how franchises I used to really love are handled. Your asses got bailed out when Bethesda decided to settle out of court because their lawyers, like all of you, was a complete and utter mook. I make two better executives than your entire company combined in the toilet every morning before I go to work. I look forward to the day that MS crashes and burn your company into the fucking sea, only to make you make Kinect games for the rest of your days.

That's assuming you asshats don't run your company into the ground on your very own, which you probably will because you give fuck all about releasing new games, to say nothing about just how little regard you hold towards the fans who made you what you are.

As the owner of a PS4 and a Vita please go get eaten by a creeper.

You're already got a perfectly good tag! Some of us don't even have one! Stop trying to hog them!

These days I really wouldn't be surprised. It seems like every business is now bought for billions of dollars regardless of their value. I could see it actually being a good buy in this case. The question is whether Notch would be ok with it and now days I think it could go either way. I'm not so sure he likes how this has gone. He's done a lot to distance himself from Minecraft and will sometimes mention things on Twitter that to me sounds like someone who is just sick of the downsides of fame. I'm always in favor of private companies staying so, so I hope its not true/doesn't happen.

No brainer.

Microsoft could leverage this ip in ways Notch and co. can't.

A movie. A kids cartoon. Books, clothing, toys, etc. that's one aspect. A minecraft section in universal studios.

Then a minecraft upgrade (not 2.0 yet) exclusive to pc, Xbox, windows phone. Pretty big get. Still available to a wide audience but it helps Microsoft platforms the most. Current minecraft will continue to sell of course.

Then you drop the bomb with minecraft 2.0 available for those three platforms as well. Minecraft becomes synonymous with Microsoft like Mario is with Nintendo. Just treat the ip right and you got a gold mine. Microsoft's new CEO is no fool. Chances are they will do this right.

Sounds great for fans of MS. How about fans of gaming?

To be honest Sony pretty much are where they are today doing the EXACT same shit MS is doing now, they only started worrying about "cultivating studios" when all those nice third party exclusives started going to other platforms. Had things not gone bad for them at the beginning of the PS3's life ,they would still be doing it while having a few first party studios making titles as well. You know, kinda like MS is doing right now.

That's still not really true, they had a lot of first party games and devs even on PS2 even before the third parties started spreading to other platforms in the PS3/360 gen, though they did double-down on investing in their owned studios when that happened.

Edit: Regarding the devs they bought, nevermind, Ami0x said it better.

Angry birds:)

Angry Birds, lol. Why did I confuse that? My mind went blank. Either way, same concept. Angry Birds is about lining up shots and knocking down pigs. There is emergent strategy around that, it's simplistic and addicting. But it doesn't have the same community staying power, it's not as uniquely perfect for console settings too.

I would argue however that it certainly would be worth buying Angry Birds for a billion or more. With merchandising and everything? Why not?

No. You can't take something back that's already been sold. You may remove it from sale and you may discontinue support, but that's about it.
Yeah thought that would be the case.

This deal might have made sense before the next gen release of MC but now it just seems like a waste of $2billion.

$2 billion? No, I don't think MS shareholders or the board would approve this.

Personally, I think if they've got that kind of money to throw around they'd be better buying Capcom, Ubisoft or Take Two. You're getting a lot more bang for your buck with these companies, and while Minecraft is a mega-hit, there's nothing to suggest Mojang are capable of making another hit title. Scrolls certainly doesn't look particularly exciting, and Notch gave up on that other game he was making.

People's entire lives revolve around Minecraft. Wearing backpacks, running servers with schoolmates and buying all the toys and clothing.

On Amazon, the creeper jacket for kids is #310 out of ALL CLOTHING on the website.

Whatever happens to Minecraft is going to get attention. It just so happens it involves a company we know this time.

To kids, most of their phones and computers are just Minecraft devices.

I hope MS is ready to embrace them, lest they feel their wrath.

Not smart.

Reminds me of companies like Rovio and King Games getting a ton of money because of one-hit-wonders.

Don't do it, MS.
Agreed. MS investors should be pissed if this is true. The game is on their consoles. Mojang will never create another game anywhere close to this. They may never make another game again. An even bigger waste than the Rare purchase. Essentially paying 2 billion to pull a single hit game away from Sony and Amazon devices? Nutty.

There are plenty of IPs worth that. And MInecraft is a lot more than just the game now. Merchandising is huge.
Minecraft still has to prove it's long term potential. I don't you are grasping how much 2bn+ dollars is. Dinsey bought for Lucas Arts for 4 bn. Disney bought marvel for 4.5 bn dollars.

When I first heard this, I immediately thought of the thread about Microsoft's 1st party and how instead of investing in growth from within, just throw money to make stuff 1st party. I don't see this working out long term.

Phil's probably reading about the news same time we are. Seriously, this isn't about Xbox.

B..B...But console wars...

You'd think by reading this thread that all Microsoft has done is Xbox, possibly just the Xbox One, and that's all that the company is involved in.

I know this is Gaming Discussion, but christ people...

I... have no idea how I feel about this.

On one hand, this would probably give us a better chance of getting a sequel in the works. On the other, please oh fucking please don't be exclusive to Xbox one (or any console). That would be the worst gaming industry news in forever.

I reckon if curated well, Minecraft will still be a thing when I'm a grandpa - just as I expect Lego and StarWars will be.

That is worth 2 billion.

Even more so there are 3 AB theme parks that they are part of.

Which of Microsoft's branches handles merchandising?

Movies, clothing, toys, TV shows, whatever they can come up with? How is it their specialty to leverage Minecraft's merchandising opportunities?

I'm not seeing it. What does Microsoft leverage on that front relative to what Mojang can do and is currently doing?

Go back two years ago. Change "Minecraft" to "Angry Birds" for evidence that kids attention spans and fads are fickle. MS is hopping aboard the Minecraft train as it nears its final destination.

nah man, minecraft sinks its teeth into kids' time and attention waaaaay more than angry birds. it's a different beast.

MS owns skype and so many other things. MS buying Minecraft is different than Xbox division buying minecraft.

Minecraft will become bigger and show up on more platforms .. like Skype did. Minecraft will come to google glass, iwatch, roku or what ever is out there.

IMO this has nothing do with Xbox. It's about pc and mobile.

Yup! Keep that Minecraft off iPhone and Android for a while until Minecraft on WP 8.1 sells a bunch... And to be on every Surface 3 sold... LOL not plausible, I know but funny none the less.
