WTF? No one is talking about Hellgate: London

Why hasn't anyone talked about this yet!!!
New game from Flagship Studios, which is comprised of a large number of the Diablo Team. Sounds ace!!

-PC Gamer describes the game as Diablo played from a first person perspective and set in a post-apocalyptic London.
-Roper consders the game to be an RPG. His arguments: combat is entirely stat based, not twitch based. Hits, misses, and damage will depend on the stats of your character and their weapons; and ranged weapons cast spells (they're actually being referred to as "spell delivery systems").
-The game is set five years after a war against demons has already been lost. London is depicted as a burnt out shell of itself. The demons are in the process of "hellaforming" earth to make it more suitable for their kind. A handful of humans have survived.
-The game will be played about half below ground (and half above). London was primarily chosen as the setting because it has many "natural dungeons" such as subways and aqueducts. Authentic London locations will appear in the game.
-The only chararcter class currently revealed is the knight-like Templars. They were the most effective force against the demons during the war (but were still defeated).
-Character customization exists but details were not revealed.
-A third person view will probably exist, for melee fighting and whatnot. There will also be a third person "vanity mode" so you can view your character.
-Level layouts will be randomly generated (which to some extent seems to contradict the prior statement that authentic London locations will be featured). There will be random quests and branching paths, all leading to a lot of replay value.
-Quests will be designed to push the story forward, with a minimum of Fed-Ex style missions.
-Most weapons, but not all, will be futuristic. Destroyed demons will drop many items and weapons. All weapons will possess unique stats, even those that are essentially identical (such as two Peacemaker Pistols). Weapons will have slots where relics can be affixed that add additional damage (like socketed weapons and gems in Diablo). There's also the possibility of the equivalent of a Horadic Cube.
-Some specific weapons include the Tempest Gun, which fires a round of ball lightning; the Vulcan Bolter, which shoots fireballs; the Zeus Rifle, which disperses an electrical attack that can arc between multiple enemies; the Harp, which temporarily stuns monsters; and the aforementioned Peacemaker Pistol, which fires rounds that richochet off walls.
-Nothing definite on the level max, but PC Gamer is guessing 50. Leveling up provides skill points that can be spent in three categories: offensive, passive auras, and combo moves. The skill system is still in development, but one possibility being considered is the inclusion of sub-classes.
-Multiplayer will exist and support 16 to 32 players. Co-op gameplay will be emphasized, but deathmatch is a possibility. Roper says you will not be able to play as a demon.
-Paper doll inventory.
-NPC's will join with your character from time to time, apparently only on a temporary basis, although they may reappear further along in the game.
-There are already plans to continue the series, with future settings being speculated as Las Vegas and Rome.

I also know that Namco paid a FORTUNE for the publishing rights for this game.

A PC game where you're a big bad dude beating up demons? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Also: "From the creators of Diablo" and "From the makers of Diablo" on the same cover?

Please tell more. That's the most interesting thing about this game. :D

The FPS camera worries me but this should have some serious talent behind it, so hopefully it will end up good.

I think no one is talking about this simply because there isn't much to talk about. Need more info, and without screenshots this thread is also pretty worthless! :lol

Yeah, that's me blasting a western game in the art department, funny isn't it?. Then again Deus Ex was an artistic disaster but also one of the best games ever.

I must say that I dig the setting, London is a great place to run weird plots and from the screenshots it looks like HL2's City 17 meets Constantine's hell.

So I gotta ask, what good is 1st person if all the combat is statbased? In Morrowind, I hated firing my bow at a cliff racer at point blank range and missing 9/10 times. :-\

Care to elaborate?

Deus Ex had an awesome Hong-Kong, awesome Versalife building, awesome Majestic 12 Laboratories and few more levels. Herman, Navarre, Simons, Dentons and Page were also very nicely done characters with superb voice-overs (Gunther!). That's how I'd imagine nano-augumented agents anyway.

What did you find disastrous about DX1 art?

Perhaps because it had no characters with green hair and large breasted 13 year old school girls? You know if a game doesnt look like a japanese anime it is bad art...

Cheers,
bbyybb.

So I finally saw the screens and...

...talk about disappointment.

It looks like another Doom clone, n-th FPS game, where's the RPG part?

what's wrong with the character art? that looks bad ass... sorry it isnt anothe lame psuedo-male hero with spikey hair... christ.

LOL, I hate the generic manganime look, so much indeed I've been called a troll for it :lol it is just that DE was really bad from a character and weapon design perspective. Aesthetically it was simply horrible. This also happens with Hellgate, at least from what you can see on PC Gamer.

It is funny because I think that PC Gamer's cover art is not really that bad, I kinda like the robotic crusader look. It is more about the screenshots, I guess that Borys will agree with me now that he has seen the scans ;)

Like totally, man. Cover is ok, reminds me of Power Armour from Fallout and Crusader: No Remorse but the screens? Ugh... I can't believe it will be a RPG game, looks like the worse part of Painkiller's design with bad bumpmapping.

And about DX1 art, well, one thing's for sure - Anachronox had 10 times better art.
...
Make that 100 times.

Ok, I saw the screenshots too. How disappointing. I loved Diablo and Diablo 2's art, and hell I think even Doom 3 looks pretty cool (love the new Imp designs) but Hellgate London just SCREAMS Bad Art. :(

Stop talking about it, you're making me want to play it again. I don't want to, not yet.

:lol

So does that mean they're just TOTALLY forming it? I never knew hell's minions were from Northern California.

I'll wait for a real Diablo III, thanks!

Thus far, it's a lot closer to what I'd want from a new Diablo title than the real D3 is, although I'm sure Blizzard North will do good things with the latter.

How do you know what the real D3 is going to be like, OOC?

I think it's safe to assume that D3 will be a collection of Demon related minigames on the Nintendo DS.

Here's some concept artwork:

This one had me laughing, just look at her face!

PC Gamer Quote:
"The heavenly graphics - powered by an engine built in-house, since none of the existing 3D engines could support the game's level of randomization - will certainly make adventuring in the Hellgate universe an all-new play experience."

Don't mind Andrew, he's been doing his one-liner comedy bit for a few days now.

There haven't been any shots released or at least I can't find any. So far all we have is the PC Gamer cover and they have the exclusive scoop to the game's unveiling.

No, this time andrew is dead on. The screenshots ARE out there, but they can't be posted for obvious reasons since they're scanned from PC Gamer. It looks terrible, and yes it DOES look worse than Doom 3. You need to look harder, or not look at all since I don't see why any man would activity SEEK blindness :lol.

Oh man I take that back, I just thought Andrew was making a funny based off the terrible concept art.

Damn where's my copy of PC Gamer, I thought it was just about to shipped out to the public.

It's always that place, I'll just wait until my copy arrives in the mail. I have nothing against OA but I don't want to sign up for something I don't plan to participate in. I might have to considering how efficient they are lately.

EDIT:
Holy hell Andrew wasn't kidding.

I am totally not being sarcastic when I say Hellgate's post-apocalyptic aesthetics remind me of nothing less than taxi game Quarantine.
:lol The 3DO version was the tops.

Seriously, though, I see some big bad dude beating up demons. Zzzzzzzzzzz. If Tri-ace games show off the worst in Japan game art, then this is showing off the worst in PC game art.

This is like a horror movie where everyone comes out of a room terrified and everyone else in the party has to go in see for themselves and the audience is thinking DON'T GO IN THAT ROOM! and then they go in anyways and OHHH NOOOO
