Ryan Leaf, who was the second overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the 1998 National Football League draft, was found dead in an apartment Sunday afternoon. Leaf, who struggled in the NFL after seeing tremendous success in his college career at Washington State, had returned to his native Washington after retiring from the NFL in 2001. At around 4:30 Pacific time on Sunday, a 911 call was made from the apartment where Leaf was spending the day. Authorities showed up and found Leaf sprawled on the floor. He was prenounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow or Tuesday. Though no one is sure what the cause of the death is, insiders say drugs were involved. No further details were released. Leaf played 4 years in the NFL, three with the San Diego Chargers and one with the Dallas Cowboys. He also spent time in training camp with Tampa Bay and Seattle.
