If i don't have a developers account, can i install the developers version of maverick by "other means" until the gm is released? Or is it like ios where the developer has to register the actual hardware udid(or whatever the abbreviation is)

So, I bought one of the new Airport Extremes to replace a very old third gen model. I was hoping for a drastic increase in range on my 802.11n devices.

Unfortunately, I am going to return it to the Apple Store this week. The range, honestly, seems to be about the same. I'm beyond disappointed.

I think I will go back to my old model for now, and try the Second gen Asus router when it comes out.

Why not use WDS to extend the range using both Airports?

The Airports can work together to extend range.

The Airports can work together to extend range.

I've considered doing this. I just have two concerns:

1. My old third gen AE is really old. Like, 4-5 years old. It was the first one to have the dual N capability. My fear is that due to the differences in age/technology between the two, it will kneecap my throughput. Even though I'm not happy with the range on the new AE, there was as notable improvement in latency and general speed.

2. When I do start buying 802.11ac devices, I'm still not sure my range is going to be to the point where I'm satisfied with it, since obviously the extender does me no good being non-AC. And by the time this happens, probably around fall, it will be well after my return period on the new AE.

I guess I just pulled the trigger a bit too early. The range on the new Asus routers is supposed to be phenomenal, but I have no idea how it compares to the new AE as it's way too soon for a review. Any further advice would be appreciated.

So one unintended consequence of Apple's new power management tech is that GChat disconnects whenever it's not visible. Does anyone know if there's a way to prevent this?

I really like ios 7, but I hope apple will make their OS more open for devs... and I hope that FireFox will finally come to iOS.... and more great apps.

anyone know the official Tim Cook and Jony Ive twitter?

Restoring my iPhone4 back to iOS 6.

7 is fun, but it's too beta and has some pretty annoying bugs (which is all very understandable).

They are going to have to fix the performance for 4 users though, it's quite unusable as it is. It's like running Windows 8 on a 386.

there is a lot of debugging logging happening in beta release that I'm sure will have a positive effect when removed.

Will a porn stream still load in a background tab?

asking the difficult questions! :)

well, there's info on Apple's site saying that you can omit apps from appnap so you could let safari run everything in the background with no pausing.

on another note, Apple's site shows that they have a built in click-to-flash solution in safari. pretty nice.

Btw, a bunch of animations and stuff shown on their website aren't in the beta (like the way that blue flashes upward beneath your keyboard in Messages). Suspect those are coming to the next dev build in a few weeks.

Right click an app in Finder, Get Info, and there's an option to disable App Nap - but not on many default apps, including Safari. But Apple's aware that tabs pausing in the background is an issue (it's noted in the release notes) and it'll likely be fixed before GM.

Any reviews of the new MBA? The battery in my 13'' Pro is completely dead and I'd rather put the $130 cost for a replacement towards a new laptop.

The pr images also have icon shadows on the home screen.

Rumor has it the build they showed on stage at WWDC is newer than the beta release we got - which makes sense with how rushed the development is. Likely in the time it took for them to run a public beta build through QA testing, they added a couple of other things to their own internal builds. The new Siri voices they showed off aren't in our iOS 7 build, for instance, nor is the Voice Memos app (which made an appearance in some WWDC slides).

I don't see how this is a rumour, this is pretty much always the case. Presentation builds are feature-filled so you're able to accurately demo as something that the consumers' will eventually get, call it a vertical slice if you will.

Beta builds however are designed to test specific aspects of the new OS and don't contain 'unnecessary' features until it's time to test those/they're ready for wide testing outside of a controlled environment.

Whenever Apple releases a new beta build they always state what specific purpose the new build has and what they want developers to focus testing on. Features gets added and even removed depending on what it is.

Engadget just put one up. No revelations, really - if you want benchmarks wait for Anandtech - but it's the same pluses Apple gave at the conference:

+802.11ac Wireless
+Supposedly louder speakers and dual mics
+Much faster SSD (Engadget claims they cut boot time by 1/3rd, not that it matters)
+Better GPU performance
+Battery life is tremendous! (They benched 12:51 for the 13")

The MacBook Air is absolutely the single Apple product that improves the most from one generation to the next. Miniaturization is king right now. I can't wait to see how good the Air is in a few years.

While this is true this was not a consumer event. They are running behind, nothing else.

They've converted some alerts to notifications in Mavericks, like low battery:

shQATJV.png

neat!
I think they should put notifications like this for other system level events like USB/Thunderbolt devices connecting/disconnecting, Caps Lock being turned on and off, Network going up or down. Basically everything Hardware Growler does, so I can get rid of Hardware Growler because of how shitty it is. It crashes all the time. All the fucking time.

There's no easy way to go back. If you want to test it out install on an external drive you can boot from.
Ugh, that'd be super slow. But I'll think about it. It won't replace my internal recovery partition if I do it that way, will it? If I did decide to install onto the internal drive, I just want to know if I can easily replace the recovery partiton back to normal later. I don't mind reformatting completely.

If yall Finder tabs right now,

Xtrafinder does it.
XtraFinder is terrible. As are all the Finder replacements. PathFinder is too feature bloated and isn't integrated into the OS enough. XtraFinder requires SIMBL and doesn't remember settings all the time and isn't integrated enough. I don't like them at all. Apples implementation looks like it will be awesome to the max. Can't wait to test it.

Gotta agree. The textures in the old logo were awful, but the visual representation of various genres of games did the job quite well.
The icon should remain the same. Just tweak the colors and remove the textures. It was fine how it was. It just needed tweaking. I don't get what the glass orbs are supposed to mean. Sheesh.

Think bigger.

¬ Like seeing how much is left on your oyster card (London public transport pass)
¬ Latest stock porftolio value
¬ How much data you've used this month

All without having to go into each app.
I'm hoping for weather at least. I'd love photos to actually show some of your photos though. Although that might go against the asthetic of the rest of the OS.

Does Mavericks need some kind of Device ID to install like iOS?
This has been asked a few times. Recently even. No. Macs are not locked devices. You can install it without ID's or codes or anything.

There's this one:

9036740806_159f76459a.jpg
What about just simple connection/disconnection and other stuff? Steal everything from HardwareGrowler. Especially the Caps Lock notification. So I can get rid of the app.

Yes to both.
How does it work with backwards compatibility? If I view a file that's been tagged on Mavericks on a Mountain Lion system that was originally a label, how will it appear?

The thing that worries me most about Apple now is...

...that they are clearly Pro-Jiff. Those bastards.

The pronunciation of gif is clearly public property at this point...and it's gif.

Just like how George Lucas is wrong to mess around with the original trilogy...the creator of the gif just needs to stop. We don't care what they "always wanted it to be"...we care about what it is.

...and what it is, is a gif. Not a jif.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
After installing 7 I noticed my visual voicemail is gone, and hitting the vm tab just dials my old school message number. Is there something I've overlooked that brings it back, or is it just a side effect of the beta? On prepaid StraightTalk, if that matters.

I have an iphone 5 and would love to know if it's possible to use the current beta build as a daily driver.
Also how easy is it to update to ios7 and where should I obtain the beta from and if I have a problem with my phone will apple still honour the warranty or are beta builds excluded?
Thanks.

I guarantee you'll never see a worse take on iOS 7, or, hell, anything:
http://jimlynch.com/mobile/ios-7-a-mobile-os-for-13-year-old-girls/

According to this clown, iOS has been emasculated, "screams "'girl power,'" and is designed to appeal to "13 year old girls'" and "metrosexuals." The reason for this "feminization" of iOS?:

Let’s not forget Tim Cook here either. There’s no doubt that Cook had to go along with feminization of iOS, he’s the CEO of Apple and has final say in any changes to iOS. It’s long been rumored that he’s gay, and that’s fine. But come on, Tim! There are all kinds of gay guys out there, some gay guys are very masculine in their sensibilities. After seeing iOS 7, I’m betting that Tim Cook isn’t one of them. Come on, Tim! Butch it up a little bit please, and fix this mess before it’s unleashed on the male public.

Yeah.

Developer.apple.com

I wouldn't recommend using it on your main phone right now.

Installed Mavericks and it looks like Safari is nonfunctional. Seems to load pages but doesn't display shit.

Also new Activity Monitor's Energy tab is great. It showed me that Adium uses dedicated GPU all the time. Madness.
