So I just got my macbook pro about two days ago. First ever Macbook Ive owned! Question, is it worth trying to get the Yosemite beta? Can I even get it right now?

I keep seeing all these screenshots and certain apps telling me its feature is only compatible with yosemite.

Yosemite Beta is great. We are up to a potential GM. I am not sure whether you can still get in or not direct from Apple. But the GM can be installed as long as you have it.

Just wait for the official release. Just a few weeks away.

Not worth the hassle at this point.

Not that Yosemite isn't good as it is, but the official release is mid-october, so you're literally just there. Entering the beta program and installing the beta only to update again next week (even though they'll probably make it available as an incremental update) is time-consuming for a one-week (two at best) difference.

If the current GM candidate remains the GM, then they'll be no update from beta testers. The GM will be the final version.

Yeah but there's no guarantee that it will indeed be the GM...

In fact, it's been over a week since the candidate was released. If the current build were the GM, we'd probably have heard of it going gold by now. I'd bet we'll have another build go gold.

Isn't Yosemite download only? What does it need to go gold? Yeah they'll sell overpriced usb loaders a while after it comes out…

Alright, so most of you must have heard about the wifi loading problem with Safari on iOS 8, right? There is a lag when loading websites on Safari using iOS 8 on iDevices over wifi. Doesn't happen all the time for me but sometimes on my iPhone 6 and iPad 4.

Well, do you think that there is website loading lag with Safari on Yosemite PB 4?

I haven't noticed it. But I didn't notice it on my iPad or iPhone either so…

WTH?! What apps are these?

Is there an actual Instruction Manual for Yosemite that you can find in the Public Beta?

I realise that a lot of the new interesting features won't work on my iMac but I'm still interested in how you would initiate them.

Another question, how is everyone coping with or without Flash? Is Flash important for you?

I tried to dump Flash for a week a few months ago.

No bueno. I need Flash. Too many websites are still stuck in the early 21st century and will stop working if Flash is missing.

YouTube however works great in Safari since it now forces HTML5 when possible. I rarely have Flash load for YouTube. Even on embedded videos on NeoGAF using YTM!. Though I need to keep Flash enabled for GAF for some reason.

Thankfully Safari will also disable Flash for elements on the page it deems unimportant to the content, like ads. So while I'll still get a static ad "splash" image, the Flash portion won't load unless I want it to.

Just today I decided to get rid of Flash off my Mac. I haven't run into many issues but it's still very early to see if I can live without it. But so far, YouTube is great
and the porn tube streaming websites
seem okay

Don't try to visit any news blogs. And quite a few other video sites still need Flash.

The problem I had was I couldn't remove Flash from my computer. Only disable plugins in Safari. Because unlike Chrome, Safari and Firefox (Which I keep for porn and porn only as well as downloading videos from video sites) use the same Flash plugin in the Library Plugins folder. It's stupid. And you can't disable plugins for Safari separately so when I turned them off I also lost QuickTime which is surprisingly still needed for a few things so YouTube Me Again! broke completely. It was a mess. A complete mess.

But good luck!

I removed Flash by going into Spotlight and typing Flash. It brought up a search result that was Adobe Flash Uninstaller so I just ran that. I'm assuming it has now gone. But after running it there wasn't anything new that appeared in my trashcan.

Unless Apple has gone insane, (barring any critical flaw) the GM is the gold master. I wouldn't put too much on the word candidate. It is always a candidate until it is released.

If you don't hear anything, then there probably isn't a massive critical flaw and that is better evidence it will be final. Generally you want to sit on a release for a a good round of QA, and live with anything that comes up that isn't critical, you can always do patches or updates. This protects you from doing releases that do things like remove cell service from all your new hardware.

I really think the iOS8 and Yosemite issues are more of rushed deadlines than systemic QA failure, so I don't see them switching out a new GM a week before release. But 8.0.1 was a thing, so I don't know.

I'm on Public Beta 4. They could release a Day One update like iOS 7.0.1 for the 5S and 5C last year.

But like I mentioned earlier in the thread, Mac App Store still calls the recent install "Public Beta" and Feedback Assistant is still in PB4 (unless Apple are gonna just keep Feedback Assistant in OS X from now on). So I think there will be another update.

I don't think that's a bad idea, actually.

My battery drains way too fast on PB4.
Anybody else have the same problem?
I have a late 2013 MBP with retina display

Gonna install when I plug back in but I'm crossing my fingers for fixes of the few annoyances I still have and have had since the early PBs.

With Apple, GM Candidate just means "no further changes will be made."

The software is in its final state for release, but there might be bugs to work out before release.

That's why GM Candidate 2 was so small.

Not sure if I'll jump over to Public Beta 5. I only just did PB 4 last week and the whole process takes me about 3 to 4 hours, including the 5.7GB download.

Anybody noticed any significant changes so far?

The update from GM C1 to GM C2 was only about 100 MB, so I imagine PB4 to PB5 would be similar.

No changes, it's set in stone at this point. Just bug fixes.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a final PB6 next week just in time for the final release to the public two days later.

Yup. That will clear up all the Beta naming conventions and delete the developer files. To make it more "consumer" friendly. And remove Feedback Assistant.

Hopefully if they do do this clean up update, to turn it into Final, it'll just be a delta update for us Public Beta enrollers, rather than having to re-download a brand new Yosemite - especially on consumer launch day.

The spotlight text on music files is still black in dark mode, making it unreadable.
I hope they're still fixing stuff and there is another update on the way.

Minor one but in dark mode all dropdown menus are dark but the right-click menu is still light, spoiling the effect somewhat. That's another easy fix I expected to see by now but it's still here...

Feedback Assistant. And start a thread on Apple Community Forums.

I wouldn't be surprised if some lone developer was doing a build at 1am the day of release, and frantically trying to upload it on time.

For the sake of everyone's install integrity, I hope Apple forces all Public Beta users to do a clean install.

If they're smart they'll keep Feedback Assistant in the OS. They should put one in iOS too. Today's software is constantly being updated and a lot of the time in beta. So the more feedback the better. Especially if they keep in touch when possible to let people know a bug they discovered has been fixed for the next version.

So do any of you running Yosemite Developer Preview or Public Beta have any problems with your album art orcover art when transferring your media to your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch?

My cover art for my TV Programs and Movies don't transfer over - unless the video was specifically purchased from iTunes. Music art is fine though.
