X-Men Apocalypse Review Thread

First Batman bin Suparman was bad, now it looks like the first ever appearance of goddamn APOCALYPSE is gonna be middling.

Whats the next iconic and highly anticipated comic character that's gonna disappoint?

If Suicide Squad disappoints, bloody hell.

I genuinely did not expect Apocalypse to suck. It had horrible trailers, but so did DOFP. I thought Singer would knock it out of the park again.

Trailers are seriously not a good way to indicate anything. Sometimes they're dead on, other times they're completely inaccurate.

So now everything that isnt Feige seal of quality is just "meh"? (Deadpool is the exception of the rule)

Deadpool was pretty much all Miller and Reynolds. Can't even give all the credit to the screenwriters cuz they adlibbed stuff on set.

The way Cap won. Amazing how A-List actor Chris Evans ended up with the best comic book trilogy of all time. TALENT always wins.

X-men Apocalypse is garbage.
The Dark Knight Rises was trash.
Even Return of the Jedi was horrible compared to the 2 previous SW films.

None of them seem to know how to end a trilogy on a good note. I'm horrified @ what Apocalypse will do to Oscar Isaac's careers since he's one of my faves.

Yet the Captain America trilogy ended on the STRONGEST note on equal footing with Winter Soldier.

Critical acclaim? Check.
Incredible lead actors? Check.
Insane box office numbers? Check.

Best trilogy since Lord of the Rings.

LMAOOOOOO the way everyone underestimated Cap and yet now everyone's eating his dust including all the X-men.

Allow me to be the first to see the value in this post, sans irony.

Kinberg wrote DoFP, too.

HMMMMMMM

Let's rectify this a bit: he molded it together into a screenplay, which doesn't mean much. Kinberg is a typical producer who takes writing credit on something that was written by someone who can actually kind of write (see Prometheus as an example of this, with all due respect to Lindelof as rewriter, mind you).

It's worth noting that the other two credited co-writers are also producers first though, but Matthew Vaughn at least tends to understand storytelling in his movies and is probably the best writer among the three if we draw conclusions about writing from the final product (which I think is totally fair btw. You may not be able to judge the script, but you can judge its mechanisms).

The predicate "messy" is definitely something I associate with producer writing though, which is one reason I have no love for the producer-writer-director epidemic.
edit: sorry for the 'offtopic' nature of this post.

Also being in a different galaxy compared to the other actors in these movies tend to be a plus.

Oscar Isaac excepting of course, but they put him in Power Rangers level makeup so...

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's sad because it really, really shows, even in the trailers you see Professor X attempting to act his heart heart out, and Jennifer Lawrence doesn't give a slightest shit. If your going to base your movie around someone at least ensure they actually give a shit and attempt to bring their a game.

Meh.

Gave up on the franchise after the third film sucked, and haven't been impressed with the X-Kids retool. I'll catch this on HBO as well it seems.

why are you always like this?

How many "I enjoyed X:Men Apocalypse more than Batman vs Superman..." threads do we predict will be made on opening weekend? 4? 7?

Forbes: 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Review: It's A Franchise-Killing Disaster

YEEESSSH

It is the kind of superhero comic book film that typified the genre before the original X-Men (and Blade) turned things around. X-Men is still a groundbreaker and still works as a potent character drama. X2: X-Men United contains perhaps the best first act in superhero cinema. X-Men: First Class promised a deliciously fantastical and pop-art zippy X-Men reboot. But X-Men: Apocalypse is the kind of weightless, soulless trifle of a bore that makes comic book superhero movies look bad and makes me not look forward to the next installment.

Yessssss. The world has caught up! Singer X-Men is shit-tier X-Men.

Deadpool and First Class are the best honest tries at adapting the material. No more room for pretenders.

There is a costume in this movie that is more accurate than Psylocke's.

Getting The Blob completely 100% right and then none of the actual X-Men is the sort of bizarre whiff I'll never comprehend.

I wonder what this will mean for the film's box office run. It's not 2006 anymore where perhaps an majority of the audience goes into a film blind to its critical/early reception. If you don't personally use sites like metacritic or rotten tomatoes, then people on your social media streams are posting about them.

I don't think that the X-Men brand carries all that much loyalty compared to something like Batman v Superman either.
