Metacritic currently at 4.6 based on 191 user ratings and 0 critic reviews. I don't visit Metacritic much, so does 0 critic reviews speak volumes or are many full price games un-reviewed at release?

Anyway, before anyone claims Metacritic is the homepage of the Devil populated by its Spawn. I'd read some of the reviews.
Many of them look like they are written by actual grownups. Sadly, mostly ex-X-fanboys by the tone :(

I just jumped into freeplay mode or whatever and tested with all the graphics options maxed out at 1920x1080

My FPS is between 30-40 fps.

Not bad I guess.

Okay understandable someone would be happy with that performance, then I read this:

i7 3770k @ 4.4ghz
8GB RAM
GTX TITAN -vram usage was at about 1424mb

Wow completely unacceptable, I will pass on this game for at least a few months, Rome 2 total war put me off the franchise for a while, I don't want this game to do same with the X series.

The game is still fantastic. If you can get a decent 30-40 fps out of it, it's worth it.

I haven't read any, but I'm assuming everyone is just bitching over the technical aspect of it and completely ignoring the game itself?

The problem with your comment is he has a bloody Titan, while I have a GTX670 and slower CPU.

Here are my Specs:

GTX 670 4gb SLI(sli does not work yet)
I72600K@4.6GHZ
8GB DDR3@1600MHZ
Windows 7-64 Bit

I know this game will run like crap when people with better systems are having issues, performance is a big issue for me,I'll wait and keep an eye on updates.

Hopefully the release a patch soon to boost performance, this is all about performance as I have nothing negative to say about the game itself.

+1

If the game run bad, game is bad, from the Bible of kids PC gamers. Game is fantastic, playable, it is mad write a review after one day.

Metacritic user score is the usual rubbish.

That's quite normal for a game not from a big publisher.

Plus, most outlets are focused on the console launches (they only have so many staff to review games after all). I'm sure major sites will get out reviews eventually, but it probably won't be for a week or two I'd imagine.

Anyways, finally got home, updating now and will check it out shortly! I'm excited to check it out for myself.

The game is pretty much what I expected. The performance is fairly poor but livable so far. I have a GTX 760 and a Core i7 960 overclocked to 3.8GHz and I get around 30 fps in most sectors, with it going down into the 20s occasionally. I have task manager and rivatuner charts up on my second monitor while playing and it seems to stress the graphics card more than the CPU.

The interface also takes a lot of time to get used to. It appears it is designed for a gamepad more than a mouse and keyboard. I have remapped nearly all controls as the default setup is odd, but I think I now have the hang of it.

I am still early in the campaign but I am starting to enjoy the game. I do hope there is some equipment that makes controlling other ships and searching for goods easier later in the game, though.

I just accidentally left the captain's chair and BOOM 60fps...in the back of the ship. Was nice while it lasted.

I like the on-foot segments. They could be more lively and have more things to do, but it's a nice change of pace and sometimes it's relaxing sitting in a station and watching space.

The on-foot controls are fucking terrible though, hahaha.

I would absolutely love them if it wasn't for the containers/loot. Just doesn't make sense to me at all, wandering around the station/ships stealing everything.

Also I just took an escort mission and it's hands down one of the most boring experiences I've ever had in gaming - no SETA, no autopilot, and extremely slow ships that don't boost. Not planning on repeating this ever again :(

They said they are putting autopilot in a future patch, but SETA is definitely out (which makes sense considering how much faster it is to travel everywhere).

Yeah, I can ignore the lack of SETA alright (even if I don't like the new travel system).

In general (this is going to sound super harsh), X Rebirth is reminding me a lot more of stuff like Darkstar One or Freelancer than a game from the X series...yeah, the X series was always a bit janky, but it always had something really special about it and so far I haven't seen/found that spark in Rebirth...here's to hoping it makes itself apparent soon :(

edit

Someone on the X forums is saying that station building is limited to a number of preset locations (apparently there aren't even very many). Why Egosoft, why? :(

edit edit

Reading the forums in depth, I am sort of relieved to see that I am not the only X vet who is completely underwhelmed/disappointed by the game.

Holy flashback batman, that was an awesome game for its time.

Still waiting for the optimization issues in this game to get patched before I pick it up, it's rather disappointing that it's a technical mess on day 1.

So I flew around a space station scanning the symbols to get information and apparently this pisses off the cops, so now I've got this horde of cops following me around everywhere spamming my communication with "You're now on the list of undesirables" followed by some NPC saying some crap about being happy when the cops toast nosy people. Whats really odd is that the cops don't actually do anything beyond following me around.

So yea, I guess scanning the points that the game tells you to scan is a bad thing, don't do it.

Alright, I don’t know how a Titan could not be getting the game to run at a better than 30-40fps average, but here’s my specs and I’ve got everything turned up (except for AF, which is oddly grayed-out), LOD and view distance sliders are at 80, and the game is definitely playable, surely above 30fps:

i5 3500k (OC’d to somewhere over 4.0 GHz, I let my ASUS Z77 mobo decide it with those neat BIOS presets)
Radeon HD7870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
32GB RAM
Windows 7

Worst thing about this launch is not all the technical issues, but that veteran players have been reporting that a lot of substance has been cut out of the game...I read that ships actually never go to other systems now. That stations can only be built in predetermined locations. Etc. :(

I hope that they can spend another year working on an expansion / overhaul just like with X3. Though I'm scared that the pre release hype this title received in comparison to previous X games might possibly sink Egosoft what with all the angry newcomers on Steam, Amazon and so on. There will be a lot of refunds.

Content/Depth being removed was definitely my main concern, wasn't sure if I trusted my own senses until I had a chance to read what some of the other old players were thinking. It's all pretty damning, and it's actually really, really unfortunate for Egosoft (though of their own making I suppose). X Rebirth has had the biggest public exposure of any of the X games (if I recall correctly), so the technical problems combined with the grumbling of older players will make this release really really rough. Both new customers AND old players complaining, pretty bad combination.

And actually, I am incredibly conflicted - a huge part of me wants a refund, because frankly I feel ripped off - product does not appear to be what was advertised ("complexity comparable to previous titles" - though now that I think about it, that can mean anything, anything is comparable to anything :v ) - but at the same time the naive stupid part of me wants Egosoft to have my money so that sometime in the future, they just might make a game that is as amazing as previous titles but build for multicore/64bit machines.

If Rebirth is indicative of where they're headed in the future and not just an aberration that's a total pipe dream though.

edited for person above me!

i feel retarded. i spend a good 10min circling my cargo ship thing... i still can't find where to dock so i can drop off my captain o_O

One end of the cargo ship has a sort of hole, with a little green icon of like three boxes stacked, double click that to dock.

also whats the point of having higher resolutions when i can't read shit?

1080p is already kinda rough. 1440p is unreadable. 4k? can't even imagine.

From the sound of things, I assume I'd be perfectly content jumping into Albion Prelude after I wrap up my ~300 hour playthrough of Terran Conflict, and not be bummed out that I opted out of preordering Rebirth...

Douchebag. Yes, me.
Is there a sure-fire way to get past the "sell 100 energy" bugged mission?

I'm currently sitting at the point where I'm supposed to buy the energy, but I'm not sure what breaks the mission...

After 7 or so hours with Rebirth and a fan of the X series all the way up from X2 through AP, I would say...probably yes. Play AP for a while, keep an eye on the egosoft forums, and maybe if it gets fixed over time, then pick it up!

And it really hurts to say that, I really, really love the X series.

Sounds like a plan.

Although...I really hope I don't have to go through another Hub Plot in AP...at least not to the tune of 75,000 microchips, sigh.

Well I can give AP another shot...any suggestions? I watched youtube videos but yeah lol....

Are you in a squad with your freighter? The freighter is doing the buying and it will follow you to the location to buy the energy but it can take several minutes for it to catch up to you to perform the purchase.

Can you not select to buy the energy? I am using an Xbox controller and thought at first that hitting A would select the item to purchase in the station menu, but I actually had to hit X to go to the next screen to select how many energy cells I wanted before hitting A would perform the actual purchase.

I'd say persevere with XTC with the Xpanded mod or some such. Get a guide to trading and just enjoy the climb. The possibilities are second to none.

Notes and future plans from the devs

First of all let me start by saying that I am vey sorry if you personally experience problems with our new game. We are doing what we can to fix these issues as fast as possible. Below I will try to summarise some tips and inform you about our plans for updates and patches based on the feedback from threads in this forum and the egosoft community (which is unfortunately currently broken under the heavy load).

###### Bugs we are investigating ######

- Broken or missing voice recordings in language other than english

There is an update for german voices today (nov 15th) and another update end of next week. We apologize for these problems. French voices are expected to be added in mid december, russian voices should also follow in december.

- Performance problems on very high end PCs

It seems that some of you experience an unsatisfying framerate even though you have really high end machines. We want to know which systems are affected by this and need to reproduce these problems here. To do this it would help us immensely if you could send your DXDIAG reports and describe the framerates you measure (e.g with the FRAPS tool) in certain situations. Please describe the situation and give different examples (e.g landed on a station, in an empty zone, close to a station, in a highway etc.). Please send your information to info@egosoft.com with subject #PERFORMANCE INFO#

- Stuck object on platform: We are sorry that this still happens sometimes and will fix it ASAP, but you should however always be able to simply use ENTER - 5 to get back.

- We read reports of people who can not save: Please check if the harddrive that you are saving to has space left and the right are set correctly for the savegame folder. If you think this is all correct, please send us a DXDiag file to info@egosoft.com with subject #SAVING BUG#

- Crash right at gamestart (but not in or before start menu):

This is very likely memory related. Do not try running the game in 32 bit Windows (this is not officially supported). If you still want to experiment with 32 bit Windows, be aware that it may crash. More importantly it will definitely crash if you do not set your machine to allow more than 2GB of physical memory. There are tricks to achieve this but in general the rule is: Use a 64bit Windows! UPDATE: Patch 1.12 will give you a message at the start if the game has zero chance of running because of "out of memory" and not even start!

- Exiting the super highway (blue) millions of km away from anything

This seems to be a bug several people report. We are trying to reproduce this but it is not easy. If you have information on how to reproduce, please email info@egosoft.com
Please let us know if you had this problem with 1.12 or above, as we hope it was already fixed.

- After loading cursor vanishes
While running around on platforms the mouse cursor is supposed to disappear. If it happens in normal flight, please check if you have more than one physical monitor and the cursor may just moved off the screen?

- Ship flying through station:

We apologize for this happening. We hoped to have reduced the chance of this happening significantly, but are investigating this.

###### Tricks & Tips ######

- Dont run game in 32bit Windows and make sure you have enough memory free

- Make sure you have latest drivers installed.

- If you have problems with the game, reset all settings in the driver to default

- If you suffer performance problems set the LOD and view distance to low values. The game should still look good but this helps a LOT. Consider turning off shadows, consider medium or low shaders if your GPU is the bottleneck.

- Trading: Some people report problems that trade ships do not work as expected. In most cases this is not a bug with the trade ship AI but the ship did not get the right order through the trade menu. As mentioned above, we definitely want to improve this menu further, but most importantly you have to make sure that when you add a trade order to a ship, you click on NEXT after selecting the order and assigning it to the ship selected at the top of the menu. Then you select the amount and confirm the order. After this you should see that an order was added to the ships order queue. One thing we want to improve is management of this queue and show it more clearly in trade ship info menus.

- There seems to be a bug with menus remaining open sometimes. If you end up with a non working menu, please see if changing the screen resolution or AA settings (ESC - settings - graphic settings) helps to make the menus work again. You can undo those changes after it works again. If this happens repeatedly please email information on how you reproduce this to info@egosoft.com

###### Feedback about feature requests: ######

- Map and other menu improvement: We have a number of menu and map improvements planned. This includes more control over the map like the zoom that was suggested here and changing the layout of some of the text menus. We are also considering showing the "minimap" on the eventmonitor whenever there is "no signal" at the moment. These are a lot of individual improvements some of which will happen soon.

- Autopilot / SETA: We will add some autopilot support. However it is our goal with X Rebirth that you do not need to run the game semi-automatically for extended periods of time. This is also he reason why we will not support SETA / SINZA time acceleration. There should never be a need to wait 20 minutes for your trade ships once you have multiple ships. You can queue orders and do many things in parallel. Time acceleration as a trick to accelerate trading will not be in X Rebirth.

- Facial animations: We will look into improving facial animations.

- External view / Ability to turn around in cockpit: This was asked for a few times. Yes we will look into this but it will be part of a larger update and take more time than just a few weeks. It will also be combined with support for looking around in the cockpit (e.g with a joystick POV hat) and maybe also support for Oculus Rift style VR. So please be aware that this feature will take some time to add.

- Targeting hotkeys: Another feature that was requested a couple of times. Yes we will do this. Based on your feedback that is for one of the earlier updates even though such "explicit" targets only work in the mouse / keyboard mode. Not with controllers!

- Talking to people on stations: We have a plan for an early patch (early december) which will make the conversations and finding NPCs for jobs a lot easier and more accessible. This has a high priority.

- Skipping conversations: We will look into this, but I can not promise that this is always possible.

- Joystick support: We are aware that joystick support (as opposed to gamepad) at this time is not perfect. We definitely will make this a priority for one of the next updates, but please allow a little time for this.

First impressions from a first-time X player. Warning: lots of bitching below. And I'm tired, so it'll probably sound stupid too.

Performance
People have complained about this enough, so I won't go into it much. It's very obviously CPU-bound if you have a solid graphics card. An i7-920 at 3.8GHz can't run this reliably, floating around a station I get less than 25fps, usually dipping into teens. My GTX 670 is pretty comfortable though; usage sometimes gets into 90+%, but often 50% or lower. I can tell it's just not being fed quickly enough.

The CPU priority change didn't do much, if anything, for me. The only option change that did anything was dropping view distance; 100->0 gave me a 5-6fps boost while staring at a populated station.

I imagine there's a lot of brute force going on to simulate everything. Speaking as a Computer Science guy, if they want to improve performance, they're probably going to have to do a full pass on all the simulation systems, along with however they're handling objects.

Gameplay
I can tell this game has a TON of potential. Between the fleet mechanics, economics, exploration, etc., you can really get lost in it for a long time. The flight controls feel solid, and the little taste of combat I've gotten so far was pretty satisfying. If it weren't for the performance issues (I can't bring myself to play at these framerates), I'd already be knee deep in the game.

There's a lot to get annoyed by though. Here goes:

Interface
The UI is horrendous. All the main actions are done through a dinky little menu in the lower part of the screen, brought up by pressing Enter.

42RYdCG.png

GLDvXWG.png

It's small, and has no contrast, so it's difficult to see against the rest of the ship. Every click has a ~2 second delay before switching, which becomes tedious quickly.
On top of that, there's the fancy animation with you swiveling to the right to view the information panel; another 2-3 second delay there, and your ship stops moving, so you can't even look at information while you fly to the next location.
On top of that, if you're on foot, those same information panels just magically appear on your screen, no animation to a PDA or anything. This is way better than the info panel in-ship, and I wish I could toggle this interface.

If you want to interact with other ships, you double click to bring up a dinky little radial menu.

ffBgDUF.png

How they could fix all this (in no particular order):
  1. Introduce some contrast. It's like design 101, make my attention snap to the important things.
  2. We have lots of screen real estate, make use of it! There's no reason for us to have these tiny menus. If I have to click, give me big buttons to click on.
  3. I have literally dozens of easily accesible keys available to me on my keyboard. Why don't I have buttons for getting to the big sections of information? Shortcuts, people! With no delay please.
  4. Get rid of the delay when choosing options.
  5. Give me the option of completely avoiding the information panel in-ship.
  6. Let me continue flying while I look at information screens.

Walking Around
There are only a handful of interiors. I've seen three so far, cut and pasted between the various stations I've visited. They aren't particularly interesting, and I've only felt an annoyance having to go through them to talk to NPCs. It feels very forced, like they added it late, just for the sake of it. I wish they would have scrapped it.

NPC Interaction
There's no depth to the random merchants and "job applicants" strewn around. You might hear one of them chirp off about something, and you follow that up with a "small talk" menu option; it gives you a mini-game where you have to click when the cursor is on the best part of a bar, you spew some information, and when you do it enough, they give you some bonus (so far, only a "referral" to someone I can hire).

Some of the voices are mismatched, along with the poor voice acting. Models and animations are awkward.

There's a lot of copy paste, no depth. Again, it feels very forced. Egosoft is a small team, and as astronomically complex as the rest of the game is, I can't fathom why they would decide to take these extra features on. Pretty much a guaranteed flop.

Conclusion

I don't regret the full price I paid, I'm happy to support these guys. That seems odd, considering how most of this post is filled with complaints, doesn't it? Like I said, I see the potential here, but it's REALLY rough around the edges.

I just think I have to hold off for a bit and hope that things improve greatly before long. I very much want to enjoy this.

My 2700k at 4.8Ghz and GTX670 OC runs the game fairly well maxed out with 2xAA at 1440p (40-55FPS depending on Zone content), much better than what I was expecting. Oddly enough my frames are lower inside the stations.

Having lots of fun with the game so far.

I guess I'll reinstall TC until this is fixed. I was really close to impulse buying this earlier.

This is exactly what I decided to do after reading every post and user review I could find, and then watching a couple of hours of twitch.tv streams. I was SO excited for this game, and even though I know some people are having fun with it (one of the streams I was watching did a great job of showing off the obvious potential Rebirth has), overall I'm very unhappy with what this game turned out to be. So, why be disappointed with the new product when I know I can enjoy the older product? I will definitely re-checkout Rebirth a year or so down the road though.

Same! Ugh, hate how the FPS controls are.

Played the game for about 2 hours tonight. It's not too bad tbh. I see a lot of promise. It's just lacking some polish. The game has some tutorial prompts labeled with the wrong buttons for the gamepad, it's not always clear how you do something in the menu's, etc.

Performance is definitely on the low side. It's playable on my machine so that's all that matters.

Ugh I have a similar setup with a 7950 instead of the 670, and it chugs at 1080p in space, inside is 60fps, weird ass performance variations =/

I've got Pandora: First Contact to keep me company until I get home, but as it stands, the EGOSOFT communication bodes well. Happy to support them, as long as they support us.

Cant even finish a delivery mission at the moment that occurs about 40 minutes in :/

I think I am stuck here? I have to deliver energy cells to a base, but I have no idea how to do it. I picked them up, and told the ship to deliver them but it isn't doing anything.

If this a bug (and not me screwing something up) has anyone figured out a work around?

That section in the notes from the devs about the framerate problems reads like it's the first they've heard of it. That can't be right can it? Don't they have any good PCs at Egosoft?

I'm currently at the point in the campaign where you have to use a hacking drone....which is pretty frustrating :)

When I did that part it just took the freighter and absolute age to catch up and do the selling. You can check where it is with one of the maps. Either , or . I think

I somehow get an Anarchy Online vibe from this. Looks like a solitus in OT armor.

I played about four hours yesterday and enjoyed myself immensely. Negatives were, of course, low frame rates and the cumbersome UI. But all in all I had fun and can't wait until I can start building my empire.

I hope customers don't interrupt me to often today, as I am on hotline duty until tomorrow morning.

Will be interesting to see how this game runs on my i5 laptop with my GTX560m. Will soon be able to tell...

I buy this game in hope for long support, just as we were given with X3. I want that massive universe feeling.

The 360-pad support was a deal-breaker for me, fits my play style. Can anyone using a 360-pad explain how it plays?

Good. Aside from FPP view inside stations X360 pad support is good.
There are still bugs though with UI. Some weird choices but overall it is good support.

I am currently 2h in and after initial problems so far i am playing well.

I already noticed there is trading software to buy (i can't buy yet) that gives you ability to skip docking to buy wares from different merchants like drones.

This is definetely not X3 TC or AP. Game is so far from my short play-trough very weird. It has probably (because i don't even own one station) bad menagement UI but whole production, stations, hiring crew, scanning stations ets are up to 11 in therm of comlexity.

You can fly whole stations and find new docking points, trading points etc. There is also stations scanning mode where you can thanks to those "i" markers you can color map whole station and you can see easily which part does what, where are storage, production line and so on.

Station scanning though is illegal without license and people should use drones for that. Though police seems to be bugged as they don't actually do anything. Could be because they switched it off for tutorial part of campaign

Stations themselves are increbibly complex compared to X3 in therms of functions, design.

As i don't own any station yet you can see clearly different parts of stations doing things other than producing. There are belts for products, storage rooms, weapon points, shields points and so on.

I don't believe UI on ship will be even capable to run one station and totally impossible to run whole empire. I think later in plot there will be some change to UI to get us better view on management of property.

After initial rage toward framerate and confusion about features and prospect on game features game is looking better and better

They need to fix bugs though, crashes etc. Also some better mission log because i though for example i was supposed to hire engineer but i supposed to talk with him and choose repair ship option. Instead i hired him and non stop objective marker targeted him without any indication i did something wrong (after i hired him there is no repair ship option as he automatically repairs ship but it doesn't count toward that goal).

One thing is sure they have incredible foundations for progress in later patches and iterations
