Xbox chief: 'We discussed whether we should even do another console'

I didn't buy that consoles would solve M$' issues, there identity will always be computers, I don't think consoles ever worked and I think Microsoft is trapped with consoles.

If Scarlet sells much better the future may change, but right now all signs point to MS eventually expanding its offerings to more of its competitor's platform. Kind of shocked they would confirm they discussed this with all the rumors that have been going around.
It had nothing to do with the Xbox One sales but rather with the fact that they felt that the most important 4k/60fps target was already met by the X (at least in a number of games). But they ultimately identified other technical goals to focus on such as GPU/CPU balance, etc.

If you believe it anything is possible.

they make the best hardware, best controller, best OS. They better not stop.

Come at me with your ps4 "pro" with no 4k drive.

They will come at you with, "I guess you need to watch the paltry selection of 4K movies, since there is a paltry selection of first party games."

Careful with trying to incite a console war.

Compared to shilling, sure.

We'll see what's up at the end of next-gen.

By the end of next gen both MS and Sony will have streaming apps readily available for smartphone, tablet and PC devices and their console exclusives will be releasing on those apps (for those other platforms) day and date with the console versions themselves.

This is what both MS and Sony are working towards; Sony's just being more stealth about mentioning it. But you can see their intentions already with a growing number of their exclusives coming to PC, them switching to Azure for server services (not just for online play, but also for streaming), etc.

It's inevitable.

Writes a lot, says very little
lol that you actually believe this.

Well I don't think they are all that wrong.

MS own words indeed confirm they want to put content on all devices
They are now putting MOST of their content day and date on PC
They stated themselves that they seek to be the Netflix of gaming.

Consider that they only bought studios to pump out content, AFTER they had gamepass and to push game pass, where was this in 2014? I give a pass on 2013, but heck 2014 is the time to really show you are in it for the long run and 2013 is simply a hick up, I'm 100% ok with that, but you saw none of that. Suddenly Gamepass comes and theses guys remember to buy studios? So I think the desire to be the Netflix of gaming and to be on all devices is supported by those purchases as they didn't do that to put titles ONLY on XB, they did that with XB AND PC in mind as well as their Gamepass platform. It tells me there is truth to what is being stated about their desire to go 3rd party as their own actions support this claim.

The days of pretending MS cares about XB exclusives is long over. I think its completely fair to believe they are seeking complete 3rd party publishing in the future and I wouldn't be shocked if they release titles on all platforms while still making a platform like XB, consider that is what they are already doing with PC and XB, who is to say they don't continue that by adding more devices? Their own words say they seek to put games on ALL DEVICES. At some point, believe what MS is saying instead of trying to pretend it must be some conspiracy. At this point, how could you NOT believe they are heading in this direction consider what they've been doing? Its not like we are just guessing, they are the ones telling use ALL DEVICES, being the NETFLIX of gaming, putting their content on PC day and date, heck Halo Infinite is coming to PC and XB day and date....

What does that tell you about the future of this company actually supporting EXCLUSIVELY XB? So they are not doing that now, why question them putting stuff else where when they are making it clear "ALL DEVICES" themselves? So the most believable thing is that MS will continue to put games on platforms. Their own words and actions support that.

Best hardware for $500 that was underpowered. Best OS when everyone on this board has been complaining about it. Sure buddy.

From what I read on that Phil Spencer interview, and I may be completely misreading what Phil is saying, but it sounds to me like he wants cloud gaming for 2 things- to get games into more peoples hands and to give developers more money as costs of making games are rising...

Firstly, how will making games exclusive to cloud streaming more profitable for developers? And secondly, if the supposed high cost of having a console stops people from playing video games, then how do these people afford to pay for their phones either outright or on a mobile phone plan? Not only that, are these companies sure people are interested in walking around with an xbox controller attached to their phones playing games?
I know I harp on heaps about streaming not being the future, but all I see is these people trying to justify why we NEED streaming! It's just utter nonsense to me but hey, maybe I am truly in the minority on this...

What point is there in owning one?

That's what Spencer is saying.
Your spinning of "what reason is there to release one" is the very same thing in Xbox' case.

Xbox consoles have no place anymore and MS is moving towards becoming a 3rd party publisher like EA and Activision.
People have been talking about how this might be happening throughout the entire gen, but have always been dismissed as being "Ponies".
Now you basically have it straight from the horse's mouth.

All the other stuff he's saying is PR.

Besides, xCloud is a bad bet, but MS is gifted at making all the wrong choices.
Should be obvious by now.
"... , according to Spencer, it seems the near future will see a range of complimentary streaming and subscription services, but at the heart of it, there will still be a specialist console..."

which part you don't understand?

This thread is hilarious. Sony Sells 100 Million consoles and Microsoft Sold around 50-60 Million and suddenly that’s not good? How many Wii U sold? Game cubes? You’re not going to knock every gen out of the park, but they didn’t do horrible, they just did mediocre. This gen has not been a failure for Microsoft.

If MS is happy with its lot, why do they keep changing the way they report on their performance?

Such a stupid post by someone who said "have to be intelligent to enjoy death stranding". Can't say its surprising lol.

OT As long as Sony makes consoles they'll be right there. Without competition Sony shits the bed. We already have them censoring games. They were also cheap on the Pro by not even supporting their own tech (uhd).

Highly doubt they'll acquire all these devs they just did to not make another console. But fanboys gonna fanboy.

It would be through XCloud if they do it, which I highly doubt Sony would agree to it. They aren’t planning to put anymore actual games on other consoles. XCloud on the other hand will be usable on androids and I’m assuming iOS devices, Switch is a possibility.

honestly, I don't think this was a question for Sony. They value console sales more than Microsoft does. This is simply true. That being said, I don't think Phil is saying he wondered whether they should get out of the console business, but rather if there was a reason to build another console when they already had the X a console that could do many games in 4k...in some cases 4k 60fps. PCs sometimes struggle to reach that, depending on the game, so if thats the case, is a new console warranted?

I think that Microsoft realized that there was certainly room for improvement that could be achieved at a price point using the same engineering prowess exhibited in the X. There fore, to be more future proof, it made sense to make a new console.

This is just my interpretation. Please don't exit your respective circle jerks on my account.

Incredible how Don “Worthless Fuckhead” Mattrick fucked the Xbox brand over.

No, what's obvious is that the Xbox has been pronounced dead before every single launch. Even the original was counted out, the second was supposedly "dreamcasted", the third declared dead on arrival.

So the tradition continues.

Because he's clearly talking about whether now was the time to do Scarlett, as they already did the OneX, or should they wait, not whteher they should actually make another console ever. Of course

Well the one deserved to be buried at launch they did everything they could to screw it up. All the wounds were self inflicted last time around. We will see in 9 what happens. If they nail the price, performance and layout timeline of solid exclusives from the new studios then they will deserve praise. This is coming from someone who has gamepass ultimate until March 2022. And will extend it when I find a good deal.

Everything that you just highlighted, it should have been the death knell. Not an end of generational cycle with probably 50 million in sales when everything is said and done. Xbox platform still has staying power.

There is also the considerable console market contraction that took place in North America. They didn't go big for either PS4 or Xbox One this gen, the perception here was that both were weak and the Jaguar CPU especially a stumbling block.

If Scarlett can revive the North American console market then we'll see a much more competitive generation with healthier sales. I can't help but think that Xbox One's poor market presence attributed to the North American decline.

I don't really have an explanation for why they didn't go big for PS4. Sony seemed to have done everything right. But again, people here thought both were weak. Gamers were looking for at least 2TFs back then.

The old regime wanted 8gigs of ram no matter what. The edram and ddr3 was the only guarantee of it. They sacrificed I can't remember exactly but probably a 1/3 of the gpu die for it. The chips that allowed the 8gigs of ddr5 were not around until close to the last minute. Even sony first party thought it be 4 gigs just a couple a months before the February unveiling. I trust that mistakes of the old regime won't be made again. Granted all legitimate sources say ps5 is more powerful but it is 5-10% not the 33% plus easier ram configuration. That and no accessories to raise the price by 100 usd.

I believe it was the combo of the 32mbs of Esram and the Data Move Engines, MS sacrificed a considerable amount of the APU 's footprint to them.

There really are no legitimate sources. Just best guest estimations based on current sdk builds. None of these people making claims has any official documentation in their hands. Notice how they always stop short of giving us actual numbers on CU counts, memory allocations, bandwidth and clocks.

They really don't know. If they did we would have had mocks and copies of architectural diagrams the way VG Leaks had last time.

We're nearing the home stretch though. Not much longer.

Lets say it does cap out at 50 million. What difference does it make?

It’s double the OG Xbox and 25% short of the 360, even with a smaller userbase they are generating more revenue and creating profits for shareholders.

How is any business generating revenue, market share, and word of mouth a bad thing?

Care to share those "legitimate sources"? Because as far as we know the Scarlett hasn't been finalised. When they say they will compete on power and price, it's not because they know they have the less powerful console and they would definitely be a "legitimate source" of what the power distribution is. They have access to developers who work on both and can speak anonymously.

Right right those maus we know, we know 😊. Thanks for the enlightenment. Microsoft gaming division in general isn't a great money maker and in the past investors have wanted Microsoft out of tht department. They need to stick to services like azure, office, etc. Those gaming services ppl might believe are bringing in money aren't hence Microsoft lumping up diff gaming aspects in their Financials and going beyond tht and saying thy will no longer give out certain Financials e.g. Specific services revenue, profit, etc.

Go to the E3 threads the reports coming from legitimate reporters at that time reported all the same Sony held the power advantage. Not suprising Sony depends on the gaming business so they need a killer machine.

Xbox had the most horrible, horrible launch for a console ever. Even worse then the Wii u.
They did so many things wrong.
Barely had any REALLY GOOD exclusives like sony had and yet they stil sold 40-50mil consoles.

There is a market for it and there are plenty of people who dont care for sony exlusives and just want their mainstream 3rd party titles. Else sony would sell more exclusives into the 20 - 30 mil. Their top usually is 10-12mil with expectations like the last of us.

Microsoft can only do better now with their next console, how ever I dont like their mentality that they are now all of sudden aiming for the 2 billion + people who play games... Thats such a shitty, shitty mentality in my opinion. Get your hardcore people first..

I would find it surprising. Microsoft works with the X as a baseline and Sony with the Pro. I 100% expect them to be close in performance given that they use all the same suppliers but I don't see MS ready to relinquish the "world's most powerful console" label easily. It's one of their best assets to compete in sales although it's not their sole objective.

Im not surprised. Xbox has lost momentum since 2009 and never made a comeback. Uncharted 2 really did big things for Sony that year, as did Killzone 2. Plus 2 new franchise Demon Souls and Infamous. Playstation has been on a tear ever since apart from 2014 mainly.

This is a fact. Tht Uncharted 2 on stage demo just killed it then Killzone 2, God of War 3, etc it was just too much quality and advancements for ppl not to pay attention. Those games started and kept the momentum going.

I believe that was indeed the case, in terms in pure TF numbers, but once MS announced RT support Sony decided to also sacrifice some of the die space for RT cores. That would go perfectly in line with that job listing on initially "world's fastest console". I won't be surprised at all if once the consoles are shipped, the PS5 will actually be the "weaker" console, but with much more emphasis on RT, because ND, SMS, GG, PD etc. will convince Sony that that's actually what they want, and will be indeed able to do marvelous things with it.
