Xbox One & Design (Video)

are you just gonna keep shitting the thread all day long?
I'm not shitting on the thread just because I prefer to state my opinions strongly. Go away.
Xbox, Super Slim PS3, N64, Master System and Turbografix 16 were all design disasters. I would say the fat PS3, whilst not particularly pretty, had a decent aesthetic when it wasn't covered in dust.
not with that spiderman font. vom

my original fat PS3 looks just fine. It sits in my cabinet and I rarely see it. I don't understand why people care so much.

Hmm. That looks a lot smaller than every other video I've seen of it before. He's even standing behind it.

I think the point of the design is it isnt supposed to stand out in the living room like a gamecube would. If its supposed to take over multiple media outlets, it would have been stupid to have a radical design because it would be so much different than cable boxes and audio receivers.

I think PS3 phat looks a lot better, even with those spider-man fonts.

This. I expect the PS4 to look like this btw.

The design of the Playstations through the years was always something fresh. The Xbox One already looks old to me. I know, it's all about what the machine can do, but then again a nice looking console would be nice. Also hate the glossy finish ( must admit that it looks okay, but I the fingerprints... )

Nothing about the teaser video looks like that.

You know I never thought the new Xbone looked like a VCR until now. I didn't realize what was going on in the background at all, I saw the kinect and the controller on the left and then I asked myself, "okay so what the heck is that weird tape deck looking thing on the right? Oh god..."

I now understand what people are talking about.

Also, there's something symbolic about the xbox logo on the console being suspended in an empty black sea of nothingness...

how can you not like that sexy beast?

nice pic. The Kinect really isn't that big honestly. I didn't want to get the other one because you needed a place to set the base and it followed you. This seems a lot less intrusive.

They should have a controller there too to show the size of everything in comparison.

explain why you think it looks a lot better.

the phat PS3 looked great. The overall shape was good, it wasn't boring or generic.

the only things I didn't like about PS3 phat was

-how big it is
-how heavy it is
-spiderman font

xbox one looks too flat, simple. I know it is supposed to be minimalistic but it went too much.

Maybe I might like it better if I see it myself but from the pictures and videos that's how I feel.

you're allowed to feel that way. Some people like flashy complex designs.

I like simple as possible. Blend in with the rest of my squared black electronics.

yea I think people have these kind of preferences. I can see why many people like Xbox one's design and I think they have valid points.

It looks pretty shoebox, but more than that: I can't get over how huuuge the kinect is. Each time it appears on screen it spooks me.

it's not that huge. neither is the One.

I think the Xbone is one of the best console designs. It's very bold because it drops all pretention and toy/robot inspired visual ques. Compared to it PS3 phat is incredibly convoluted. Splitlines, different materials, redundant shapes, step functions, logos, jacks, leds, lids, grilles and tapers where none are required, it's Homer's Dream Car of design which is amusingly fitting to the initial spec.

The Xbone is not without fault though. The soft touch plastic just looks cheap, the grilles look cheap and there are still too many split lines - injection molding, sigh.

People blindly spouting design principles without considering the internal layout need to pipe down a bit. The 50/50 split is dictated by the width of the physical storage medium on one hand and the substantial cooling solution on the other. It's very well thought out and the end result is a far cry from the nerdy tech gadget look of the current systems. It feels professional and unobtrusive, something that will blend well with the rest of the entertainment center.

I like it better than any of the current generation consoles, though PS2 slim is still king.

I hope when they miniaturize the design, they consider stacking a slim tray drive below the motherboard compartment since this solution has the smallest impact on size/layout in SFF systems:

But not necessarily the same form factor.

Noticing more and more that we both have the same taste in style.

Especially since we are (seemingly) the only ones here on GAF that prefer the US SNES design over the PAL SNES design (lol; I remember that thread).

word. and those thinking it's huge should pick up a CD and realize it's about 2.5x the width. Just look at the slot size.

I don't get it. I like the Xbox One. Sounds good to me. Looks good to me. I think it will be fun, if the games are good.

They say it's four times quieter than 360, and that it uses only a little more power. That's good. I hope the power supply will be smaller this time.
