Xbox One & Design (Video)

I really like the design. *shrug*

However, the only design that actually matters is the controller design.. Which it appears that they nailed it once again. I can't wait to hold one of those bad boys.

Noticing more and more that we both have the same taste in style.

Especially since we are (seemingly) the only ones here on GAF that prefer the US SNES design over the PAL SNES design (lol; I remember that thread).

my man!

Nintendo really had a cohesive design language with NES and Super NES. Compared to them Famicom, Super Famicom / PAL Super NES looked like cheap toys. The same angular language carried through everything from NES Advantage to NES cartridge sleeves, Super Scope to Super NES box art. It was real 360 degree branding. The only thing as visionary was Apple's Snow White language.

the purest example of Nintendo's design language are actually the Nintendo AVS prototypes in NYC

Hmmm, MS proud of their console...

What else are they going to say. MS are on damage control duty right now. Personally I lean towards BBBB (big, bulky, black box), but until I see the PS4 box I am not going to pass judgment on XBOX ONE.

Davidsons IMO arrogant comment in a recent interview about killing Sony as this years E3, might very well come back and bite MS in the Ass...

If MS does not soon learn restraint and more importantly to think before speaking, then I fear Sony will walk all over MS at this years E3. Mind you Xbox One might still go on to sell insane amounts of machines, but if MS continues this streak of arrogance and ignorance towards their hardcore custommers, then MS will loose that part of the market. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that that's a giant NO NO for a modern console maker, assuming ofcourse that MS intent to dominate next gen.

Seems to me that the only market MS will dominate next gen is the "DudeBro" market...

BTW "The Beta Max" your Xbox NES comment made me laugh so hard I almost fell of my chair. (A little mean though...but very funny... ROFLMAO)

People blindly spouting design principles without considering the internal layout need to pipe down a bit. The 50/50 split is dictated by the width of the physical storage medium on one hand and the substantial cooling solution on the other. It's very well thought out and the end result is a far cry from the nerdy tech gadget look of the current systems. It feels professional and unobtrusive, something that will blend well with the rest of the entertainment center.

I like it better than any of the current generation consoles, though PS2 slim is still king..

Is this a thread where people are discussing a video which addresses the design of the system? How about you deal with people discussing the design without telling those you disagree with to pipe down?

The internals of most consoles follow more-or-less the same layout: Disc drive one one half, processor/cooling on the other, and they all manage to do it without literally looking like two separate chunks glued together.

I like the design. The top of it is a little funky but the front looks nice and that's all I will ever see of it anyway. It's very non-intrusive and will match my tv stand, tv and stereo receiver.

again with the "People don't want to know the crazy rocket science behind the box"
People aren't as ignorant you might think microsoft.
I deal with clients everyday and the more you try to explain technology to them the more bored they get. Normal people don't buy horsepower if horsepower is not exactly what they are looking for, they buy solutions for problems, horsepower means shit nothing.

I think it looks cheap and fragile. It's not the design so much as the build quality that does it. It looks like it's made of very thin very cheap plastic and the glossy finish just seems like an unsuccessful attempt at hiding that.

Talk of build quality...really?

How can you possibly tell that from videos and pictures?

To everyone hating on the design for it's simplicity and calling it lazy.

The X360 looked good but the design basically caused the entire RROD problem, this design is a reaction to RROD.

I... sorta like it? I don't get the split thing with two different surfaces. I would have loved for them to go ultra-sleek. No seams showing, one material, one box.

This isn't a Roku it needs air to keep it cool and running.

What's important is what's under that grate.

As said earlier, I really like it's design, simple and classy.
But I fear people will put other things on top of it and block the vents on the right...

The console itself looks fantastic. Possibly the best looking console ever, imo. And the controller looks pretty damn good, too.

On the whole, I think so, too. There have been things like the Dreamcast, for example, that look fantastic, but that was much more of a toyish look than this one. I prefer this look more.

I like the design of box and controller plus some of its exclusives are probably going to be amazing, but if they don't ditch their cocky anti consumer attitude they won't be getting money from me. It's a shame really, apart from having to pay for online multiplayer and a lot of other stuff I love my 360, it's actually my favorite console.

Don't be surprised if the PS4 ends up having some of that DRM too.

If you put any credit into what TotalBiscuit says it sounds like it's inevitable.

I like the basic Square/Rectangle design but they should have made the front panel the same, not half one text and shiny level and the other half another text.

Didn't realize the Kinect Bar is so massive.

That picture Chitown B posted shows exactly waht I'm talking about. Why did they choose to make the left side not match up with the right side in terms of texture/reflectiveness? Same with the top.

It would look very slick if it was uniform.

The design is the only thing I like about the Xbox One. I frankly love the aesthetics of it, but I'm like you, a minimalist.
Hah, same here. It's the only thing you'll hear me praise about the Xbox One. The console as a whole sounds pretty bad, but the physical design is top notch.

There is nooooo way the PS3 Phat looks better, lol. The thing has always been ugly to me.

Agreed, though I don't really like the two tone nature. Wish it were one or the other. The design itself is nice.

I really like the look of the controller and the box itself, though I think they went a little overly-metaphorical with the 16:9 ratio thing. I also don't see the need for the 50/50 split change in materials. I get the 50/50 split in the way of the grill though.

My god the guitar in the beginning and these guys.
Really not inspiring confidence.

It is actually making me like the aesthetic look of the console though.

And with that said I now have zero problems with the look of the system. If they had to shape it like a shoe in order for me to never have to go through 9 Xboxes again, then I will be more than happy to play Halo 5 on an Air Jordan.

It's funny that they mentioned Windows 8. They had this great gaming ecosystem on PC at one point that they actually helped foster. I don't understand why they abandoned it for this. Especially when Windows is the thing that brings the money in.

Don't get me wrong either I'm not saying to abandon the Xbox. What I'm saying is it's clear they want some sort of synergy between the two platforms and it seems to me like a huge missed oppurtunity. Can you imagine if they had been first with a quality Steam like platform integrated into both PC and xbox?

But that's Microsoft for you. One of the most talented work forces in all of tech (really) held back by poor management and poor vision. Been this way for a decade.

Also the console is awful looking. The 16:9 design influence is kind of funny. What in the world does that have to do with building a nice looking box?

"Disaster?" No way. It may not be some ridiculous transformers box or something but it's what it should be. Sleek, sexy, and invisible when it needs to be. It'll fit right into my entertainment center with my Onkyo box and PS4.

I agree the design is very sexy. I have a modern style TV/living room and the Xbox One is very modern looking. It does no look like a toy or a Gorge Foreman grill. PS3. What do people want a multicolor octagon with flames all over it?
