Xbox One & Design (Video)

I... sorta like it? I don't get the split thing with two different surfaces. I would have loved for them to go ultra-sleek. No seams showing, one material, one box.

The split thing is really to have the vent over the giant fan... see the wired pic

Don't get the hate regarding Xbone's design; it looks good.
I guess it's cause of the 1980's design vibe.

It's a modern design choice for "high end" consumer electronics. It's not meant to look like a toy. A lot of buzzword wankery in that video to be sure.

hopefully they get the size down quickly on this thing because the size & design of this box & kinect is not mass market friendly.

Is this a thread where people are discussing a video which addresses the design of the system? How about you deal with people discussing the design without telling those you disagree with to pipe down?

The internals of most consoles follow more-or-less the same layout: Disc drive one one half, processor/cooling on the other, and they all manage to do it without literally looking like two separate chunks glued together.

I apologize if I hurt anybodies feelings but with constant bashing of anything xbone it's hard to tell between fanboy trolling and honest opinions.

Taking the functional requirements and the intended design tone into consideration, I think they did a great job of facilitating the former with minimalist approach while still providing some character via surface texture variation and consistent placement of geometric design elements. Clearly their intention was to take the design in a direction opposite of predecessor's flashy "toy" look and even though they are constrained by use of plastic materials (unlike say apple) they successfully avoided the "generic cheapo DVR box" feel that some cats have been implying in the past week (with clear intentions).

I think they nailed this aspect and many others agree. If anyone here thinks they can design a better skin around those internals by applying the rule of thirds, be my guest and show us.

Is that the Xbox One with the cover removed? If so wow. It's a lot smaller than the footage from the reveal made it look. That's about the size of a current Xbox Slim.

Damn it, it is not growing on me I still hate the design!

It doesn't look atrocious enough to want to hide it either, though. Like someone already said, the controller design is what matters the most and they got that right at least, and so did the PS4.

I think it's important for a console to be iconic above all else.

PS1, PS2, Wii, PS3, Xbox & Xbox 360...their designs split opinion and none of them were absolute crowd-pleasers in their aesthetic but pretty much everyone, technically versed or not recognises them when they walk in the room.

The Xbox One just doesn't have an sense of being iconic; it's simple and it may sit nice in an AV rack but it isn't instantly recognisable like the previous consoles were.

It's an important part of the brand image imo.

made me remember how much i hate art school goobers

"the richest the darkest black to produce the rectangular shape that reflects our holistic creativity developers can reflect............"

fuck you. you made a black box, now go play braid

I don't love it or hate it. There is nothing that stands out about it. As much as I can appreciate minimalism, this just looks bland.

Hopefully Sony doesn't make a similar looking "box". My family is confused about different consoles as it is.

This isn't a Roku it needs air to keep it cool and running.

What's important is what's under that grate.

That's really quite small. I don't understand how they fucked up making it look like a behemoth in all their PR, how do you even achieve that.

Also that fan is ENORMOUS, so low RPM = whisper quiet

I'm not a huge fan of the new Xbox design, though I do like the more minimalist designs.

Something about that texture/colour shift right down the middle is a bit jarring.

I think the new controller looks great though. The 360 controller is my favourite one to date, I certainly hope they let us use this new one on PC.

In that picture the controller is also the size of his head lol

Makes me wonder if they made a larger empty shell for the console, controller and kinect just for display purposes? It is kind of perplexing how it could look so large in that photo and much smaller in the WIRED photos.

If you're going to divide the form do it right:

Not right down the center. Xbox One is an aesthetic abomination.

As someone else has said, this wouldn't have worked at all. You can see clearly from the innards that roughly the entire right half of the console is dedicated to the giant heat sync and cooling fan, as well as the hard drive. You would need the ventilation for both those components and that would spill over the "golden ratio" line.

I don't get people who are so bent out of shape about the looks. I'm still not sold on the Xbone in general, but it's certainly not because of the physical design. This is how I would prioritize ...

1) Games / Exclusives
2) Performance (kind of goes hand in hand with 1)
3) Controller (they nailed it)
4) Privacy concerns (this could be the deal breaker for me)
5) Quiet!! (after owning a 360 for all these years this is HUGE)
6) Non-game related content (Netflix, etc.)
7) DRM issues?? (meh, I'm a grown up and I buy my games new. I guess I understand some of the concerns though.)
...
99) How it looks

With that said, it actually looks pretty cool to me. It's all minimalist and understated which is great.

Yup, totally agree with this post. The overall design of this console is the least of my worries as well. I actually think the controller is really slick, and I would buy a PC version of that even if I don't end up buying an Xbone console. The innards look really sound, and don't seem to be prone to overheating like the original 360. The amount of resources that the OS is using is questionable though.

But MS policies on used games and privacy concerns are the real deal breaker's for me.

Either Geoff is child sized or that box is pretty big. I like the look but that thing is huge

I don't know where it is but I saw a chart showing that it's actually smaller than the original Xbox 360 and isn't too far off from the Slim.

Edit:

Here it is

Okay so I measured the XboxOne based of the USB port on the side. A USB port is about 1.3 ~1.4 CM wide. With that knowledge I came to know that the XboxOne is about 25cm depth and 30cm wide.

Now for comparison the:
PS3 Phat: 32.5 cm (w) x 9.8 cm (h) 27.4 cm (d)
PS3 Slim : 29cm (w) x 6.4cm (h) x 29cm (d)
X360 Phat: 30.9 cm (w) x 8.3 cm (h) x 25.8cm (d)
X360 Slim: 27cm (w) x 7.5cm (h) x 26.4cm (d)
Original Xbox: 32cm (w) x 10cm (h) x 26cm (d)

Now from my calculations I get these dimensions for the XboxOne: 29.5cm (w) x 7.5cm (h) x 24.7cm (d)

Note that the scale difference between the left and right picture is about 2.111*
