Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

So One Guide and TV stuff will still be fairly limited as a UK Sky customer , right ?

Still no reason to bother with HDMI-in ?

These updates are great and all but how hard is it to add a screenshot feature.

"Xbox Screenshot" ???

probably because they need a non-kinect alternative and can't figure out a quick way to do that since there is no dedicated share button on the controller.

if you want to switch quickly between games and TV, and can't be arsed to use the input button on your TV remote, then its still ok. I find the guide itself to be a bit poor - not many channels fit on the screen, and navigating with voice is clumsy other than 'whats on BBC1?' etc - so page up/down really need a remote.

On my Tivo I'm basically keeping the Tivo remote handy for volume control, guide with more channels listed, but do use the kinect for channel changes 'xbox watch bbc2'

I also have the Tivo app on ipad which lets me browse my recorded shows and start them playing so the smartglass stuff is irrelevant. But for now the HDMI passthrough is staying.

Interestingly I'm finding myself playing the Xbox more than the PS4. I don't know if thats just because it is newer for me (got PS4 at launch, Xbox one a couple of weeks ago), or that because we're watching TV through it, it is much easier for me to just start something on Xbox so convenience is pushing me in that direction.

It still needs some polish on the TV side, but I could see myself buying some multiplatform games on Xbox if that convenience of access is strong enough to overcome the usual technical differences Vs PS4.

Excellent stuff, just need external media playback now. I'm having to stream it (wireless) from my laptop at the minute.

Streaming from my PC was peeing me off, streams dropping sound etc. Then I realised that I could I just plug my £20 mini media box into the HDMI in slot on my XB1 and can now watch anything I throw at it MKVs, Avi's etc off my attached HD and still have access to my XB1 much better I've found.

What media box is it

I couldnt find a better place to ask this, so I decided to ask here, hope thats not a problem.
But, Im pratically decided to buy a Xbox One (this weekend or the next one), but I want to know how safe is the console about hardware problems!

At the release I could see some people complaining about a problem at the disc driver. is that a relevant number? Is there any problem that people should be aware of, or is it safe to buy now?

I've had mine since launch with no problems. I think the failure rate isn't anymore than the average electronic device.

great job MS. I just ordered the 4TB external drive that Major Nelson posted so I'm pretty sure I'll be set for this entire generation. Here is my wishlist for future updates:

- Preloading preloading preloading!! Enough said.

- I would like the snap menu changed, Especially for watching TV. I would rather it be a picture in picture type window that allows you to keep the game you are playing at full screen. Give us the option to "snap" the TV picture in any corner of the screen in case there are important HUD elements in the normal upper right area. I absolutely love the idea of gaming and watching a sporting event at the same time but the way it is now there is way too much wasted space of nothing.

View + Menu together

Can't they create a "wheel menu" as in Mass Effect? So when holding one of the buttons on the Xbox One controller a wheel menu pops up where you can quickly select different options? I don't really know what the current buttons do when clicked/pushed, so it might not be possible at all.

4.5TB should be good enough for a long time.

I wonder if better HDDs which offer super speed over USB 3 would help with loading and installing.

I have been checking out some Buffalo and Western Digital products.

Surprised to find out last night that you can't create accounts for children without XBL/email. Seems a bit daft. Will be complaining to my DAM, but feel free to run this up the chain yourself, Nelson :P.

I was hoping the preview would begin today. Probably wishful thinking.

I would imagine they want this update ready by the time people can buy the console without Kinect, and that's in early June.

I read somewhere that beta testers will have this sometime next week. Not sure if that is 100% accurate, but it would make sense to give the beta people time to mess with it so it is ready to roll come June 9th.

This seems like the most active general "Xbox" thread right now, so I'll ask it here.

This isn't even a problem, per se, I'm just curious if anyone else has come across this.

I have 2 games now for XB1. Dead Rising 3 Day One edition, whose game case on the front has the XBOX ONE writing and logo printed on the case and is smooth.

I just got Ryse from GameFly, and it has raised lettering for the front logo.

Are there different game cases in circulation already? If so, that seemed fast.

Give it a couple years and we'll be back to flimsy super thin cases that can break if you look at them wrong, just like the 360 cases.

Yeah, there are two types. No idea why. One has silver lettering, one has raised white lettering. Can only assume it's manufacturer differences.

Nice updates. Hope the ability to hide snaps is next. I'm really happy with how dlna works for music, but wow do I ever hate it taking up so much screen.

Nah, it's all there and works very well.

Being able to voice command to a channel certainly has it's uses. Obviously there is nothing to stop you using the Sky EPG and remotes and you normally do whilst you are running through the Xbox.

After this update I wonder what they can do next.

All I want now is a "take a game pic" feature with twitter integration and remote downloading (something that the Xbox 360 has) and I'll be content.

I'm also having some issues with TV... there's no sound when I turn on the Xbox One with the TV app starting as soon as I turn it on. Might be a HDMI handshake issue with my antenna box though.
