Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

Just wondering, is USB 3.0 fast enough for this? Like, would you notice a performance difference in a game installed to the external hard drive as opposed to the internal one? I guess this would depend on the game (maybe affecting something like Watch Dogs more than something like Killer Instinct)?

The external is for storing the game, not playing it. You copy it back across to play it don't you?

" Another great companion feature now in SmartGlass is pin reordering. With the touch of your finger you can easily organize your pins in categories or favorites based on your preferences and have those changes refresh to your console."

YES!

My 1TB HDD is ready. Real names, auto-sign in, and real name support are great additions too.

Steverulez! Y u get rid of Fizzie?

I'd rather Sony do things they promised at launch like Suspend/Resume than external storage. You can at least expand the HDD to 2 TB currently.

I agree as well, but the idea of being able to install to an external drive and move it around multiple PS4's would be nice.

No, you play it directly from the external drive.

USB 3.0 is runnung through the same Bus as the internal harddrive. The speed will be exactly the same.

If you use a 3,5" 7200rpm drive even the access time will be faster then with the internal drive.

At the rate that Microsoft churns out these updates, we're going to be disappointed when the updates don't add features.

Will I be able to plug in a USB thumb drive with movies on it and watch them? Or will I still need my PS3 for that?

I'm sorry to be the one to say this but it is 2014...time to invest in streaming resources

Try out plex, there should be an app on xbox one in the near future

I do not have a XB1 but the external storage support sounds awesome to me. I anything always great to have a backup of my stuff and also perhaps a way to replay older games digitally purchased and not have to worry about internet caps.

Phil Spencer shaking things up in a great way!

Makes me more excited for E3 now, as all these announcements are pre-E3. What can they have left in store?

Looks like I'll be shopping for a massive USB 3.0 drive come next month. Glad to see this so soon. I'm one of those people that gets nervous when my storage drops below 500GB..lol.

I'm constantly cleaning the 3.5TB in my gaming RIG.

Yeah Plex needs to be on X1/PS4 ASAP. So damn good running media files off Plex rather than copying to USB all the time.

Is everything good in the entire Xbox ecosystem now solely Phil Spencer's work?

Plenty of good people in the XB1 software team. Thank them.

PIN REORDERING!

Finally.
That's already available in the SmartGlass open beta and has been for a while. If you install it on your phone (it doesn't overwrite your existing SmartGlass app), then go to Pins, you can long press on a pin, then drag and drop it to a new position and that causes the pins to automatically rearrange on the console itself.

The SmartGlass beta is cool for a couple of other reasons too. You can set it to give you notifications when your favourite friends come online, or if a friend starts broadcasting on Twitch. Also, the OneGuide stuff is excellent IMO. For instance, you can scroll through app channels, tap on Top Movies for Amazon Instant Video, scroll through the movies, then when you tap on one you get a description and a play button. Hit the play button and the app automatically launches on the One, the movie starts playing, and the phone's screen turns into a basic remote control.

Here's some images of that: -

The non-replaceable internal HDD size was one of my hangups with Xbox One. I like the thought of USB 3.0 storage better than swapping internal drives, so this and the Kinect-less SKU make the package really compelling for me.

Now I just need a few more games to be announced and I'm in.

That's great news.

I do really wish there was the ability for me to assign nicknames to friends though so I could keep them straight or add notes to my friends list.

External storage might be the first significant competitive edge the Xbone has over the PS4.

Well, it sure wasn't Kinect, at any rate.

Have they explained how we can use the record feature without Kinect? Is it part of an upcoming firmware update?

Well you can use it via the controller. Go to the dashbard and Snap the DVR App.

But I agree they should make a shortcut for that.

Give them some time => Automatic Signin is in the Update.

July Update should be this big as well :)

The ability to take your usb hdd and its games to a friends house and sign in to use them is incredible, very nice.

With everything you do cloud saved, just tell your friend to download the game before you get there.

Like my profile is saved at a buddies house, and he said lets play some powerstar golf. I said sure, sign in as me and download it. By the time i got there it was downloaded, we both played, i went home, kinect recognized me, and I played 3 holes with new clubs i had gotten at my buddies house.

This is great and it's good to see Microsoft make refinements to both hardware and software as well.

I personally don't own the PS4 or XBOX One and am on the fence about either, but the limiting factor that hurts the One is the lack of remote play. While it's not something everyone would want, I would love to see something like that integrated with it's tablets or smartphones to stream like the PS4 and even Wii U does. If that update ever came, I would get the One in a heartbeat.

Still, good to see that you can now expand beyond internal storage, that's a plus.

Microsoft sure are beating Sony hands down when it comes to updates and communication about updates.

More I think about it, I'd love a 1TB Hybrid in my PS4 AND a big ass External Drive too.

Good stuff. During back to school time in the summer, you can buy external hard drives dirt cheap. I'll grab a 1TB 3.0 around that time and use it.

Good stuff. Having the HDD non-replaceable is nothing but a scam this day and age.

External storage might be the first significant competitive edge the Xbone has over the PS4.

Well, it's not like the PS4 has ever been stuck with a default HDD though. It was user-replaceable since launch last I recall.

Externals are a lot cheaper though, so it's by far a better solution.
A competitive edge though? What does that even mean?

Im extremely impressed not only by what hes doing, but the speed hes doing it in.

I bet he's putting in some crazy hours, what with designing and writing every word of code himself.

sounds a bit cumbersome, it's not a deal breaker but hopefully they address it in the future.

On topic: auto-sign in is a very welcome feature, I hate having to choose my profile (the lone profile in the system) every single time.

Because clearly adding features that are already on PS4 is beating Sony. And no adding external storage support is not better than the ability to change your internal storage to whatever size you want but it will be a welcome addition when Sony adds it to PS4.

Its funny reading these threads, with every update Microsoft releases you see these comments. Most of the update features are things that were on PS4 from day 1.

With external storage support in June, you can also choose to copy full games and all of the associated content in one easy step.

I presume that by "copy" they actually mean "move"? It would be amazing if you could make backup copies of your digital games on multiple hard drives, that would solve the problem of preservation of digital Xbox One games, which is one of the main things keeping me from going fully digital, but I doubt they would allow that because of piracy and sharing concerns. Can any Microsoft Gaffer clarify?

Sweet finally some way to organize the pins outside of simply stacking then on each other and auto sign-in without Kinect.

Fantastic that we're already getting external HDD support next month. Currently have only 90GB left. Time to go shopping for an external HDD. 10TB+ storage here I come :P

No need for your friend to download the game if you have it on a hard drive already, it's just a matter of synching the cloud copy of your save file.

Being able to take you external drive with you to another console is absolutely better than simply swapping out internal drives. It's not quite the same and ideally both systems would allow both but come on, that is an advantage the PS4 does not have.

Both manufacturers being so receptive to community feedback and quick software updates helps everyone - it doesn't hurt someone who doesn't own that particular console.

Well there is no dedicated "Share" Button. Nothing they can do about it.

But they could add it to the Power-Off-Overlay (Hold xbox button for 2 Seconds) to have a "Record That" tile.

I really believe thats what they are ultimately going to do. Not much other options there.

Does the XB1 provide enough juice for USB powered drives, that's the question. Or will we need an external power sourced drive or a Y-splitter cable like the Wii U does?

Talk to me Larry!
