Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

Is everything good in the entire Xbox ecosystem now solely Phil Spencer's work?

Plenty of good people in the XB1 software team. Thank them.

The software team has no public face specifically to thank, since Marc whitten left Phil took over his job and Phil said he had talks with the team in early April presumably to set the agenda for next few months.

You should really try to be less obvious in your obvious dislike for him. Your comments on the rare layoff thread were off base and you chose to ignore the responses that laid that out and whilst to be frank this probably had little to do Phil specifically, he is the public face of the division.

I don't really see how it's any different to any other time executives get praised

Man, that external storage (with two drives even!) is bad ass! I wish Sony would do this. Yes, yes, the PS4's internal is replaceable, but not to the equivalent of slapping twin 3TB externals on!

That's already available in the SmartGlass open beta and has been for a while. If you install it on your phone (it doesn't overwrite your existing SmartGlass app), then go to Pins, you can long press on a pin, then drag and drop it to a new position and that causes the pins to automatically rearrange on the console itself.

The SmartGlass beta is cool for a couple of other reasons too. You can set it to give you notifications when your favourite friends come online, or if a friend starts broadcasting on Twitch. Also, the OneGuide stuff is excellent IMO. For instance, you can scroll through app channels, tap on Top Movies for Amazon Instant Video, scroll through the movies, then when you tap on one you get a description and a play button. Hit the play button and the app automatically launches on the One, the movie starts playing, and the phone's screen turns into a basic remote control.

Here's some images of that: -

hooooly shit... I hadn't noticed this somehow...

Because clearly adding features that are already on PS4 is beating Sony.

What does sales have to do with the frequency of updates?

All of the features that were stated before the launch of the Xbox One will now be on the system after this June update (real names).

It has been more than a year since the PS4 was revealed alongside suspend/resume but yet it's still not on the system. Hopefully it will be coming soon.

Because clearly adding features that are already on PS4 is beating Sony. And no adding external storage support is not better than the ability to change your internal storage to whatever size you want but it will be a welcome addition when Sony adds it to PS4.

Previous updates have been better too though.

Their whole messaging about their updates has been spot on in comparison to Sony's, you can't argue that.

Has Sony come out saying that they're going to allow external support too? Could you provide a link please as I don't recall this at all?

BTW this is coming from someone who has never owned a Microsoft console, who has a PS4. I just don't feel that Sony is communicating with us very well in comparison to 6 months ago/Microsoft currently.

Being able to take you external drive with you to another console is absolutely better than simply swapping out internal drives. It's not quite the same and ideally both systems would allow both but come on, that is an advantage the PS4 does not have.

Both manufacturers being so receptive to community feedback and quick software updates helps everyone - it doesn't hurt someone who doesn't own that particular console.
Show me the thread where people are deciding to buy Xbox One because you can plug in an external hard drive and take your games to another Xbox One. Its a feature that WiiU has and in both cases it is out of necessity. You cannot change the small internal drive so the alternative is giving you the ability to expand via external drive. An advantage it is not.

don't have an x1 but external storage seems awesome. i wish sony adds external storage sometime in the future, my 1tb hdd is already half full.

Its funny reading these threads, with every update Microsoft releases you see these comments. Most of the update features are things that were on PS4 from day 1.
Most people would disagree.

The most requested features by PS4 fans are largely things the Xbox One already has. The top 5 most wanted features are the ability to delete 0% trophy games, the ability to change your PSN ID, the ability to view your trophies offline, a YouTube app, and the ability to change a sub account to a master account. The Xbox One already has 4 of those 5 things and I'm not sure the sub/master account is even relevant to it.

For a "hardcore gamer" console, the PS4 is light on features. There's not even a way to organise your games, get notifications when friends come online (2 more highly requested features on Sony's site), or quick resume a game from standby.

So with USB 3.0, you actually run the games on the external HDD and won't see any degradation as opposed to running it from the internal HDD?

If so, that's awesome and I hope Sony implements the same on PS4. I know it's fairly straightforward to swap out the HDD, but you can't beat the convenience of just plugging in a huge HDD.

Good stuff. Having the HDD non-replaceable is nothing but a scam this day and age.

Well, it's not like the PS4 has ever been stuck with a default HDD though. It was user-replaceable since launch last I recall.

Externals are a lot cheaper though, so it's by far a better solution.
A competitive edge though? What does that even mean?

I bet he's putting in some crazy hours, what with designing and writing every word of code himself.

You don't have to reply to every positive MS post.

Will I be able to plug in a USB thumb drive with movies on it and watch them? Or will I still need my PS3 for that?

I would also very much like to know this.

Spot on unfortunately :(

Along with the ability to customise my PS4 interface/background.

Sony where are the updates for my precious? :'(

I agree as well, but the idea of being able to install to an external drive and move it around multiple PS4's would be nice.

It definitely sounds like an excellent feature. Sometimes i visit my brother in law, but never touch his console since he doesn't have as many games as i do, so it would be very convenient to simply carry an HDD around and log into his console with my account.

This is a feature that Sony should definitely consider for the PS4.

What I want for any friends list is to be able to assign a "nickname" to each user. That could be his forum name, real name, or anything that is significant to me for identification.

Absolutely nothing, now if only you would try and follow the conversation instead of jumping in from the middle. This is the most pathetic faux concern if ever i have seen one, when ever an update is done for Xbox One you get concerned people hoping the feature is added to PS4.

A 3rd-party app has nothing to do with a system update/system features. Shouldn't folks be asking Google/Youtube about the Youtube app on PS4?

What would be the point in using anything smaller' lucky if you could fit two games
2 games is better than nothing though, right? What if you already have a 128GB USB stick? It would be better if you could use any size drive.

It does when the app has to interact with saved videos on the console in order to be able to upload them. Why does the PS4 not already have a YouTube app that allows you to upload videos directly to your YouTube account? If it was just a case of making an app, why is it taking so long? MS and Google are hardly the best of buddies are they, so it's not like Google would do MS any favours.

A scam? What about it is a scam? It's a nuisance, perhaps, but I don't see what about it can be considered scamming.

I mean perhaps if you could upgrade it but only with special HDDs that cost a lot more than they should, it would be a scam, but this isn't the 360.

I'm really glad that this is coming out now. I will be looking for a new High Volume drive as soon as more details on recommended speeds are available.

Both launched with features that the other doesn't have. However MS has in a shot amount of time added nearly everything that I could identify as features that the PS4 had over the Xbox One. The same cannot be said about Sony, and the features the Xbox One had over the PS4.

As an owner of both consoles, the progress made (and overall current feature sets) between the consoles isn't very close right now.

I know you're responding to someone that's disingenuous but your conclusion is not very well thought out.

When it's a bog-standard 2.5 inch HDD?

Knowing that Microsoft sold these separately for absolutely insane prices for the Xbox 360?

Yeah, i'd call that a scam.

download game to hdd, put hdd in cupboard, download again.

Yeah, sure, silly me. But what I'd like to know is whether we'll be able to copy games from one hard drive to another without the need to download them multiple times. That's not a feature that's needed right now, but in 20-30 years when/if your Xbox One games are no longer downloadable from Live, it would be a life saver for game collectors. I suppose moving would suffice, but there's always a chance, however slight, that the hard drive holding your games will stop functioning for no apparent reason (it happened to me once, and I've been a bit paranoid ever since).

I guess there will always be ways to do it via PC, using various community-made tools and modded consoles, but having it as an official feature on retail consoles would be great. On the other hand, it would pose a security risk, I suppose.

I think the next big issue for me is the automatic download of games once you buy it on your PC.

Yeah.

The problem is if you really write it down, you can surely make a list of 50-100 small things the xbox 360 could and the xbox one even cannot do 6 months post launch ... ;)

But what does that have to do with the X1? They are releasing External HDD support in a few weeks.. they have no skin in that game. They are going to let us plug in 6tb+ worth of space if we want to. I fail to see where this is a scam by MS. Maybe if you could ONLY upgrade using their own external HDD but that is not the case.

Having a youtube app and being able to upload videos to Youtube are 2 different things. So my point still stands.

Sweet. Gonna grab myself a 3TB and transfer everything over to it once this comes out. I like this feature for Wii U as well. Hopefully PS4 gets it eventually as well.

I'd agree on the 360 side...that was BS.

However, this isn't a scam in any way it seems, so to say it is is absolutely silly. They're not forcing you to buy their own stuff. I would like an easy slide in/slide out of any drive setup, but allowing people to use any massive external drive they want is great, and it should have been the norm on any console for a long time (even at launch).

The most requested features by Xbone fans are largely things PS4 already has.

It's always been like this between consoles.
Such as? The only thing that comes to mind would be preloading and even that only works in the USA on the PS4.

You're comparing two different products. In what world is your argument anything other than a non-sequitur?

'Phones with expandable memory slots are a total scam. I mean, Sony had one on the Vita and it only took proprietary Vita memory sticks that cost an arm and a leg. What a scam, I'll never buy a Samsung Galaxy S5.'
