Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

So users use the wrong command that the Xbox One isn't designed to respond too and understand, and obviously it doesn't work, because it's not supposed to. Yet that means the voice commands work horrible and isn't useful? :p

Kinect is working really good when they say the right command. As soon as people learn the commands and the Kinect learns your voice a bit more, the Voice Navigation is going to be really swell. Even now, it's pretty good.

Agree with you there.

One other niggling thing that worries me: to do voice commands you have to read the whole name. In the case of Redbox Instant by Verizon, you have to say "Redbox Instant by Verizon."

I hope that doesn't become a trend....

I'm not sure, I think over time though they can evolve the voice tech. I really want the ultimate goal to be personalised voice commands, 'voice pins' if you like.

Just got done adding some extra links to the Review thread OP.

Damn, that was intense! Seems like response is "shows potential" which...was to be expected.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Can you customize the length or size of the "Snapped" apps? I didn't check to see if that was an option earlier.

Also, not "everyone" is saying it's fine. Here is from Eurogamer:

this news does not please me, I wanted to run internet radio sites through snap during gameplay.

Here's the thing. It isn't JUST for gaming (clue is in the name) and it'll get better over time. Not worried.

Xbox getting better reviews than PS4 from Polygon, Verge, among others.

GAF implosion imminent.

Not surprised. Since E3, it was clear which of the two systems had the better software, better OS, better features. Despite people finding reason to rip the console left and right, XB1 basically had a better offering in almost every way outside of raw specs and hardware design.

What's surprising - at least to me - is how polished the OS features, and some some of the games are looking to be(by 'launch standards', of course). There were times I thought they might had pushed back the launch date by a few weeks, but they certainly covered a ton of ground in such a short time.

Did not expect PS4 audio to be that bad in comparison.
XB1's audio is in good SHAPE.

But the Xbox One's OS is like Windows 8 which is also bad. It looks cluttered and way too many options are on the screen.

I don't understand these complaints, the screen isn't cluttered, everything is neatly placed in a square, and the reason there are a lot of squares is because you're supposed to navigate with your voice, the reason there's so many things is so you can just say, "Xbox, Go to Skydrive." Even though, it's pretty simple and easy to navigate with a controller, and considering you can choose how many apps/games show in the home screen, you can make it uncluttered.

Panicked when I got an email from Amazon that wasn't my shipping notification but it was just a standard email advising people to make sure their credit card info is valid before shipment. Phew!

That'll work just fine. Ignore Eurogamer here. I'm fairly positive that the game pausing is just a function of it losing focus. Just switch back to the game and you can do both at the same time. And the big internet radio sites (minus Spotify) work wonderfully with IE:

Polygon said:
It's worth mentioning that every app on Xbox One — save for, bizarrely, Skype — can also be snapped to the right side of the screen in a mini window, either by pressing the menu button on the app, or saying "Xbox, snap [app name]." This ranges from pure novelty — watch Netflix while playing a game? Sure! — to more useful applications. Every web-based music service we tested — save Spotify (thanks, Flash) — worked in the Xbox One's version of Internet Explorer, and the snapped window will play audio simultaneously with the main window. As for the browser itself, it's surprisingly fast. Both this page and our PlayStation 4 review ran better there than they did in Chrome on the late-2011 MacBook Pro of one of our editors.

Well gotta work early tomorrow. Gonna head out for the night but tonight has been very encouraging. Unfortunately for many, the Xbox One launch isn't going to be the shit storm that was predicted. From reaching mainstream sites, most of them have been effusive in their praise of the Xbox.

Ultimately, I'll be searching for an Xbox on Thursday night now.

Real quick, are all games up on Day One Download? I thought I read something at WalMart that Zoo Tycoon is a WalMart exclusive, or somesuch, but I just want to DL it at home.

Read through a few reviews, overall sounds good. Just like the PS4, the first year will have a lot of growing pains as both systems slowly get updated to be running how each company envisioned them. Can't wait until Friday to get my Xbox One going.

Retail exclusive AFAIK. All of them will be day one digital download.

IGN has confirmed with Microsoft that upcoming Xbox One launch title Zoo Tycoon will only be available in retail at Walmart for a limited time. It will, however, still be available as a digital download from the Xbox Games Store.

Enjoying Giant Bomb's frank chat about the xbone, looking forward to Friday.

Although mine hasn't changed status on Amazon yet :(

Where in the podcast does that start?

I think the embargo was to try and prevent idiots from showing off what Kinect looks like when idiots are in command.

Gamespot and others were cringe worthy when they were clearly using wrong commands, using commands while content loaded and even saw one outlet complain about how it didn't work when two people commanded at the same time....

Both of these consoles are rough around the edges in terms of OS and feature set. It seems like the X1 has a very capable OS that does a lot of good. It just needs polish. Thats enough for you to not want one anymore?

Maybe it's just the Kotaku review, idk. I'll try to see some other opinions, but that review makes a lot of compelling points.

Some of the problems are bugs or oversights that can be fixed, some seem to be at the core of the design of the console and its UI. Until they can fix them, I've basically lost interest. That being said, I'm not going to clog up the thread with that negativity.

The reviews are spot on imo. The system isn't perfect, but imagine in a couple of years when most of the issues will be gone....man.

Also, can't wait to unpin every useless goddamn app i'm never gonna use. My ui is going to be clean as hell.

Yeah, all my installed games will be pinned and I'll get to the rest with voice commands.

I already got GAF pinned and ready to go. I'll throw a few games and channels on there as well.

You're thinking about it like an engineer not a consumer.

When tech is lifelike in execution people expect the remaining 10% to perfection: sure it works incredibly well when you know just what to say but that's the catch 22, people assume cognition when it doesn't exist just like with SIRI.

I wont be able to listen till tomorrow. What is their general feeling?

Like the PS4, they like it. It has its quirks but overall it's a solid system for launch.

Does anyone know when you turn off the Xbox 1 does it go to standby mode similar to the PS3 slim? or is it legit "off"

You can fully turn the system off but if you say Xbox Off it'll put it into standby. Microsoft said they built the system to always have power running through it, in standby or use, for 10 years.
