Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

Was at the new Microsoft Store opening in OKC tonight. First hands one experience with XBOX One and played a little Forza 5. Game looks so much better in person, and the controller... I love the 360 controller, but the XBOX One controller blows it out of the water.

Also met MajorNelson tonight...

Friday can't come fast enough!

What did you guys chat about ?

This whole day, I've been thinking about Forza 5 and KI. Even while playing my PS4 (which I love), I couldn't shake that I wished it was the 22nd already. I'm having a great time with NBA 2k14 and going to finally play AC: BF tomorrow. I was tempted to get NFS but knew that I would never play it after this Friday comes.

Too many good games and new consoles but not enough hours in a day. This Thanksgiving and Christmas season is going to be interesting between using the XB1, PS4 and WiiU. I hope I can add a lot of you guys on XBL.

So besides the core functionalities of kinect2 for the casual market ie: voice commands for tv, internet etc... What could hardcore gamers expect from kinect? I want this type of integration:

Just bought my Xbox Beacon Day One Live Card and an extra Day One controller. Hate to have two different ones.

Still was kicking with a Day 1 360 until a year ago when I upgraded to a slim. Just needed more hard drive space. Will see if MS Live can keep up next week, my only concern.

Have all Day one editions heading my way.

Forza
Ryse
Dead Rising 3
Kinect Rivals

Kinect Rivals has been delayed till Spring 2014.

Damn.. so I guess the X1 makes 5.1 sound to stereo sound? But there's a beta to have it 5.1? What's this beta stuff? Make it mandatory. I don't want my movies and sports on Direct tv brought down to stereo sound. This makes no sense.

New York Times is the only one to mention this at all and we don't know if this is going to like this after launch update.

Kinect Sports Preseason is on launch.

On the company level though, it remains true as always. The Xbox One has a larger array of exclusive games at launch, but this is partially because a lot of games which were going to be on the 360 were pushed onto the Xbox One. They've cannibalised one console to kickstart another. Again.

Sony, on the other hand, have delivered many solid games this year which aren't on the PlayStation 4. They could have moved games, like Puppeteer, Gran Turismo 6, The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension, and Beyond: Two Souls to the PS4 - they didn't. That's precisely because they are 'for the gamers'. Yeah, Killzone and Resogun isn't the greatest launch ever - but let's not exaggerate the quality of Forza, Ryse, Dead Rising, etc. These are going to be pretty forgettable launch lineups.

Question is what will happen over the next year, two years, three years. Sony have the better hardware, a stronger first party stable of developers, and thus far the indie scene on near lockdown. I don't quite know how anyone expects Microsoft to keep up. 3rd party exclusives are, a short term solution. I expect Titanfall will be huge, but that will make it incredibly expensive to keep any sequels off the PS4. When Titanfall 2 is better on the PS4, what then?

Don't get me wrong, I've got tons out of my 360 and have never regretted buying it even though the last few years have been thin. Microsoft can win me back as soon as they can prove to me that core gaming is a long term thing for them. That, or somehow revitalising Age of Empires. Or 1 vs 100. Or getting Halo back to its best.

A possible Titanfall 2 would really be no less awesome a game on the Xbox One. I think there's a great overestimation of just how much the larger audience sweats the petty stuff. A game being a higher resolution or possibly having an extra graphical effect is awesome if that's the platform you have the game for, but a lot of people simply won't care or lose a bit of sleep over it. They care about two things. Does the game look awesome on the platform they're getting it for, and is the performance good?

Forza, Dead Rising and Ryse being forgettable launch games is purely for each individual to determine for themselves. We simply don't know that yet. Forza 5 having dedicated servers for MP, more cars on the road, along with the very promising looking cloud based Drivator AI suggests that Forza may not be so forgettable at all. I'm also sure people once thought that the original Dead Rising would be forgettable the first time it showed up on the 360 as well, but here we are at the Xbox One launch, it's the third game in the franchise, and it's one of the most exciting and anticipated games at launch. For Ryse's part, that's a pretty badass looking game with very promising looking sequel potential in a fictional setting not explored nearly as much as many people would like to see. If nothing else, I can see it being a cult favorite among quite a few Xbox One owners. Those kinds of games are super rare in the Xbox first party stable, so I can certainly see some remembering Ryse in a very positive light. That is if it's as good as I suspect it will be.

As far as I know that's definitely inaccurate.

The fact that he says there's a menu option to turn on 5.1...makes it sound like any other console in that it has audio/video options.

I hope so man. Editor in Chief from Kotaku responded to me saying he wrote that and that it's true... but that there's some beta you can be in to make it 5.1.. So I guess there's still that.

Consider me signed up for that beta. No way am I going backwards in sound.

god, what is the hell is this LocoCycle nonsense? I'm not one to judge games on their graphics alone, but yikes does this look bad. dat BEARD engine isn't looking too hot.

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt, but all the video coverage ive seen has just left me shaking my head. and I liked splosion man, the maw, and gunstringer.

Friday can't come fast enough!

That's really cool. Major Nelson is an awesome guy. Would like to meet him some day. It's kind of strange, but most of my teen years was on an Xbox 360. So I remember Major Nelson all the way back to Highschool.

Mmmmm... Have had a few beers, keep getting more and more excited for Friday! My UPS couldn't get here soon enough. Hell, I'm jumping in right now! MMMMMMMM.. Dat resolution feels so fine! I'll let 720 p all over me!

I am pretty much just going to get drunk and play Dead Rising or Titanfall when I get my xbone. Thats pretty much how its gonna be.

Still some lag in the kinect it seems. Or that could be the sensitivity setting.

It might just be a threshold thing. It looks like the leaning in that demo isnt full analog and there might only be three positions. The Kinect leaning in Battlefield looked really good in the Giantbomb video and was more of a 1 to 1 thing.

I just saw the thread about Trophy rarity on the PS4. Any chance the XBone will be implementing a feature like this as well?

Isn't this the same thing?

XboxOneAchievements.jpg

Is that saying 86% of players who own the game have completed it, that the average of all those players have completed 86% of it, or 86% of players have a particular achievement? I'm just confused since it says 60/60.

If it's the latter, it looks like it's a similar system as long as it's retroactive to XBox360 achievements, except there are no designations of "Common", "Uncommon", "Rare", "Ultra Rare", etc.
