They did it with the digital, "always online" plan. To me I wouldn't sense this as defeat. I would see it as actually listening to their customers, which is quite admirable.
Yeah, but if they can't guarantee to developers that there will ALWAYS be a Kinect, then no one will use it and all the R&D and development costs they put towards the Kinect will be for pretty much nothing. At a certain point Microsoft should stick to their guns because the Kinect is actually pretty cool when it works properly. Yeah, as a game console the Kinect's usefulness is questionable, but for navigating the UI and as a "home entertainment device" I've really enjoyed using it.
I'd be kind of disappointed if they dropped it, since it would get little to no support after for the folks who do have it.
