Xbox One- what would it take to get YOU to buy one ?

Sony put $850 worth of hardware into that system for $599. I also don't know of any console ever made that was capable of playing 3 generations worth of games. 60 GB HDD while MS offered 20, wifi while MS only offered wifi for an extra $100 dongle, HDMI while MS offered none.

People get $599 stuck in their heads without realizing what was in that package. I had just bought an HD-DVD player for $1000 a few months prior. $599 was a steal against the $1000 blu-ray players that it competed with.

One of the reasons I bought my PS3 was that cheap bluray player... But then shortly thereafter this thing called Netflix showed up.

My bluray collection never exceeded 10 movies... :/

Can't get audio/video quality of blu-rays over netflix yet. For some of us, that's important.

On topic, can't remember if I posted in this or not. I don't have time for any consoles (I have: PS4, WiiU, PC) so really nothing would get me to. I expect any exclusives outside of Halo will either go to PC or multiplatform. So there is zero reason for me to get it.

<-- easy target..
Being a collector, my motto is gonna buy'me all..
Given that i bought a ps4 last Christmas and a new pc is going to be born out of my wallet in september..
Given i aim for iphone6 in october..... I'd say i'll get a xone either for this Christmas or for my birthday in january :p

I'm just watching the price, now. There's enough to make me reasonably satisfied when I do get one - Master Chief collection, Forza Horizon 2 (a recent addition, since I hadn't played the first until comparatively recently, but I loved it), *maybe* Sunset Overdrive, *maybe* Dead Rising 3 - but I don't feel an overwhelming desire to own one right away. I suspect I'll get an itch to play a Halo or a Forza at some point later this year or early next year, then I'll spend a bit of time weighing that up against the current pricepoint.

I do have a PS4, so it's solely the exclusives that'll sway me. Although I guess I should weigh the Xbox One over the option of upgrading my main PC, too, but for the forseeable future I think that's powerful enough.

From my perspective, the hardware was mostly irrelevant. What was in that package was the ability to play PS3 games, and that's what I judged it on.

I have low income, so I probably wont be getting one until I either have a better paying job, win the lottery, or find one somewhere for free (happens all the time clearing out evicted houses. Can't believe people leave consoles behind)

I'm barely even using my PS4 for anything other than crunchyroll, so I don't really need a XB1 either.

Doesn't matter, though. I mean, I agree that it's an impressive package. But your argument makes me think of the people who try to justify 4-hour paid rentals on PSNow by explaining the complexities and advantages of streaming - tech doesn't matter if the price is wrong. $600 for a console is $600 for a console - too expensive, no matter what's in it.

Owned original XBox and then the 360. I was a fan. But I no longer share the vision that MS has for their "you can watch TV!" box. They showed their cards with the clumsy release of the XBox One. Forcing us to buy into their stupid gimmick... It was all so stubborn and selfish. Not to mention their lower spec internals. It all left such a bad taste in my mouth that for me to purchase an XBox One is just going to take some time. I was a huge fan of Gears of War so that could sway me but at the same time. The PS4 is keeping me plenty happy at the moment and there's more than enough on the horizon for the PS4 to keep me content.

MS lost me this console cycle. Maybe they can win me back in the next but I'm largely turned off to the idea of doing business with their console division.

backcompat.gif

Seriously, I think *either* company - Sony or Microsoft - to come out with a true backwards compatibility feature will win my money. PSNow isn't going to cut it, because I dont want to pay to play the games I already own. I have a substantial back-catalog of disc-based releases and digital purchases on previous consoles, it wouldn't be feasible to stick all those in the closet for the current-gen offerings on Xbox One and PS4.

Think about it, Microsoft announces all 360 Kinect games would be patched to utilize Kinect 2.0, therefore finally delivering on the promise they gave with the first Kinect. That would sell consoles *and* single-handedly rescue the Kinect from certain death.

And then I could replace the last-gen hardware in my entertainment center. Without it, I'm afraid this might be the first generation I wait *years* to dive into.

For me it would be the release date (less than a month remaining)

Furthermore exclusives, even if they move to the PC it makes the device less appealing.

I'm having a tough time answering this question.

While I try very hard to be platform-agnostic, I am having a hard time thinking what would make me want an X1. There are some lovely-looking indies (finally) for the system but those will invariably get released on PS4 at some point. X1's big "exclusives" are not my cup of tea, since they all seem to be varying flavors of shooters.

I'd need the following:
  • a hardware refresh with a smaller, sleeker form factor
  • a price point around $250
  • a non-shooter exclusive that knocked my socks off

Unfortunately, with X1 sales sort of floundering relative to the competition, I don't see any of those happening any time soon. Between my PS4 and Wii U, I feel like all my gaming itches are being properly scratched as is.

10-15 amazing exclusive games (Naughty Dog-like quality), superior multi-plat versions and a 200€ bundle. I don't think I'll get an Xbone this gen, I prefer the PS4+WiiU combo. Maybe I'll get a PC in 2-3 years though

As for me, i already have the console. I find some of the posts in this thread hilarious, like "no buy until it's 150$ with a game and free online"... seriously ? lol...

The Xbox One is an amazing console contrary of what many say. Other than the hardware that is weaker than the PS4, it's still an amazing console with amazing games coming in the future. The controller is also very good and very well built, yes it requires batteries but it doesn't last for 3 hours either. The console is big but silent.

Bottom line, there are some good things about the Xbox One that i love. Controller, games, quality of Live as a service... and other things i hate like the UI speed, long install times and how big the console is. But the console is great and i can understand why some people choose it instead of the PS4. Not because the PS4 is more powerful that everyone needs to buy it. Maybe some people think the Dual Shock 4 sucks balls and that first party Sony games are boring or PSN is not a quality service... not everyone is the same.

I know i will enjoy the hell out of my Xbox One this fall with Halo MCC, Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive and Killer Instinct Season 2 !!!

Well you got 3 great games right there, 2 of which are coming within the next 3 month, sooooooo

giphy.gif

But seriously. If you are looking forward to those 3 games, you are probably also looking forward to halo5 and halo6 will probably also come out on this gen. Throw in some killer instinct, forza horizon 2 and some other unanounced exclusives coming down the line and you can pretty much justify it ;)

Heh, I am going to wait until the white bundle comes out before doing anything. 1 TB and Sunset for 400 is not too unreasonable.
I enjoyed what I played of Killer Instinct. If I get it, it will be for Christmas since the 2014 game line-up on PS4 suuuuucks.

I feel as though you can only make this argument because BR 'won' the format war. If HD-DVD had won, the $599 price tag would have been even more of a poke in the eye, and far more obvious for what it was: a cynical trojan horse with greater benefit for Sony than for the consumer.

Forgot which gaming outlet wrote the article, but in summary it basically said something like "Companies need to make consoles that gamers want to buy, and not a console that the company wants to sell." I thought that was pretty accurate, since all the originally touted "features" of Xbox One like the anti-used game features and the 24-hour internet check-in requirement were all features that only served Microsoft's interests and had little-to-no benefit for actual customers. Because of that self-serving attitude, I'm glad that Microsoft appears to have "lost" this console generation, because I really hope they re-think how they serve their customers in the future.

Because of that whole "Xbone as all-entertainment" concept, it seems like they've basically not cultivated any new franchises or killer game apps for the new generation, and it's super-lame how they're relying on a rehash of popular games (MCC) as their main selling point right now. Not sure if Sunset Overdrive will be a system-seller, but it doesn't really appeal to me when I've got Watchdogs and GTA5 to play.

I never owned a Sony console, bought an XBOX and 360 not long after they launched though, but Microsoft has lost me, in addition to the $400 million that they lost in the XBOX One divison.

Microsoft helped my decision in what my next console purchase will be, a PS4.

I'll be honest enough to say that Microsoft probably can't do anything at this point to get me to buy an Xbox One. I am a one console guy, not because of loyalty to a brand or anything of that sort, but because I only have so much time in my day. The first year or so is when Sony and Microsoft have to compete for my dollar by convincing me they have the ecosystem, games, and services that I will be happiest with for the generation. Microsoft won that battle last gen, and Sony won it this gen. Unless Sony fucks up, I don't see myself even considering a Microsoft console until next gen.

Halo MCC bundle at $399.
It will sell like hotcakes!

Reading back through this thread, you guys treat Microsoft like a monster and that Sony is not here to take your money.

My biggest point of hesitation is honestly the company, Microsoft. Their corporate culture seems toxic, an emphasis on anything but the consumer's best interests. True, they've backed down on a lot of their stances, but only with a lot of arm twisting! Seems like it will creep back in over time.

There are a lot of things working against the console, but all of them are irrelevant without the most important factor - desirable content. There simply aren't any exclusive games released or that we've seen enough of that make me want to buy the console. Price isn't even an issue. If I have no use for it, then even $99 is too much. People say that's ridiculous, but if I bought every good deal I came across, I'd have a house full of unused shit.

I understand that the MCC is a big deal for a certain group of gamers. Heck, a friend of mine told me he HAS to buy the One because of it. But selling like hotcakes? I don't really get why it's such a big deal, it's a neat thing but not a big holiday release, for me.

But I'm a hypocrit. Nintendo announce a Mario Galaxy HD collection a I will throw money at my monitor.

I too owned a Xbox and 360. I traded the 360 in after the Kinect E3. They have lost there way, no amount of 180s will fix that. They can sit this gen out as far I am concerned.

You just answered your own question. Also, there is a big Halo following...in case you didn't know. :)

Games. Exclusive games. REAL exclusive games. I have a PS4, Wii U and capable PC. My multiplat gaming is covered. I'd only be buying a bone for things that will never come to any other platform, and Halo/Gears/Forza just don't do it for me.

Cannot stress enough how much I agree.

Need those games MS, I know it's early but I need something other than shooters. I don't like them. I know Sony is just as 'thin' right now, but going by history I believe Sony will fill out their gaming roster with things I'll enjoy.

Scalebound has me interested, keep it going and I'm owning a X1 in a heartbeat.

The problem is that my PS4 is my multi-plat box this gen, so I would only buy a Bone for the exclusives. And um, MS is looking pretty thin there.

I guess I'll wait for Gears of War and a $200 price point before I would consider jumping in.

What was and will get me is Halo. I had the 360 last gen for Halo and all the multiplats (didnt care for Gears or Fable) and PS3 for the exclusives. Now this gen has turned. Only getting the Xbone for Halo. Nothing else on it interest me to much. Will Gamefly Sunset and the others but nothing says "Buy me" like Halo does.
If MS didn't have Halo, would pass on it entirely. Hopefully 343i has learned from Halo 4.

I already have a ps4, a good pc and a wii u so it would take a lot.
$250 sku with kinect ( yes I actually would want the kinect, I don't wan't just another gamebox, I want something different and new to play with) and at least 6 quality games that implement kinect in an entertaining way ( I have no idea what this would entail, but it's not my job to come up with entertaining ideas for kinect).

I would also consider buying a kinectless version for $150, and about 10 games that really appeal to me

DAT FIRST POST HEAR HEAR

Yeah the way the industry is going now, even if they made a product that has everything I want for the price I want, I'm not so sure the industry itself is something I'm interested in after the shit they pulled. I'm serious.
It used to be when new technology became available, some thirsty and ambitious people stepped up, used that technology, and brought us things we could only dream of. Now days, technology that blows away our PS4's and X1's is available, game design that blows away our design is available, hell all kinds of shit is available. But this industry is now one of the most lucrative in the world and it's not about what it used to be about. MS just really drove that point home for me with this shit. They were like, look, we have these games right? So, now that we have them, well, we're not gonna just give them to you, we're going to keep them. But we're going to make this really cool service and make sure you get more out of it than you BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. Well we have the ability to make a badass machine, but you know, we're going to throw kinect in there, because well we're becoming a juggernaught and if we dont take advantage of this now, someone else will, and well WE JUST FUCKED YOUR INDUSTRY

I don't have a PS4 either because it's like well, it this the future of gaming? I had bigger dreams than this when I was a kid, so you guys go have fun with those money boxes. I'm gonna go put on this Oculus Rift.

I really blame MS for a lot of the way I feel about the whole thing. They were the ones who came to the meeting with the TP stuck to their shoe

EDIT:
$29.99 + $15.00 Mail-in-Rebate final answer

I'd settle for good games that I want to play. Same reason I bought my Wii U.

More realistically, I'd want it to replace my HTPC. Proper codec support or media players in the app store would push me to replace that old Core 2 machine in an instant. It's Windows compatible hardware running on a hypervisor and there are so many ways to take advantage of that. This split between the Xbox One and conventional Windows PC is one of the major reasons that I don't want an Xbox One.

Releasing an x86 compatible tablet and ignoring the potential of an x86 compatible console is just mind-blowing incompetence in my opinion.

There hasn't been a compelling exclusive game that I would even pay $60 for, let alone the cost of the console.

That might not be the case if I hadn't already bought a ps4, but as it stands now I need a must play game to come out for xbone

Holy crap this thread really blew up didn't it ?

I kind of hope someone from MS reads through it (but ignores the flamewar in the middle).

There will always be a large audience of people that won't buy an xbox console, they've been around since the original system, hell I was among them until a game I wanted to play was announced. Then they knocked the 360 outta the park .... outside of that red ring of death issue that I'm fairly certain anyone who bought a 360 from 2005-2008 had to deal with at least once.

Still, it had a good a run but some people walked away , ready to dive into something else and the PS4 stole some fans for sure going by this thread.

Again, I'm among them for now as well.

It looks like MS needs to hurry up and hit 299.99$ fast enough that it's still a price lead on sony as well as bundling it with a bigger hard drive and a free game. I'm thinking Next christmas they could do just such a thing with Halo 5.

Xbox One Slim , 299.99 , comes with halo 5 digital copy, 3 months of live gold , halo themed controller and a 1 TB hard drive. Kinect port and HDMI input are completely removed , replaced with a usb 3.0 port that can (with a dongle) use kinect if a user so desires. Sell any older larger models through cable companies for 99$ but remove the HDMI input and replace it with a co-ax input. Add in PVR functionality. 3 year cable/internet package that also comes with live gold. This version of the xbox one could also include kinect and a 2 TB hard drive.

The longer it takes MS to gain a 25% price point advantage the worse things will be for their sales. At least going by my little thread here.

Really, best case scenario, they invent a time machine and go back to 2010 , fire don mattrick and the entire home and entertainment division and make sure their replacements design a box that can do everything sony's does for the same price or less. Also add in backwards compatibility and we'd probably see the xb1 outselling the ps4 every month right now.

Alas, MS does not have a time machine and so they will have to suffer the hit of large price drops and excessive bundles until they bring out new hardware it looks like.

It has to be something crazy like MS pays Square Enix a buttload of money to make a exclusive Chrono sequel or pay Sega to bring Valkyria Chronicles series remaster or Skies of Arcadia 2 to the Bone.

But those won't happen, so...

You just answered your own question. Also, there is a big Halo following...in case you didn't know. :)

People underestimate the power of this franchise... People have a passion for this, that is not matched by a lot of other franchises. And this basically creates one happy place where halo fans of all creeds can come together. Some like halo 3 the most, some halo 2 and some only ever loved halo 1. All will come together and have fun in unity come november ;)

I'm really looking forward to a lot of games this holiday season (basically I play everything), but if I could only have one, it would be the mcc...

It would be interesting to see if software sales parity were approached in some hypothetical scenario where the hardware sales gap narrowed.

MS kind of let Sony sneak up on them with PS Plus. Now that PS4 is the initial system for a lot of people, Xbox Live becomes a hard sell. With the content overlap, I would no sooner sign up for a second online play subscription than I would pay for two music streaming services at the same time.
