Xbox reportedly moving away from Physical Media

consoles are a digital consumer nightmare without physical media... even if it's a game cart/disc.
-You won nothing on the psn/xbox stores.
-Everything tied to your account and vulnerable
-no playing offline
-no 1.0, so if they patch something you don't like, no going back
-no way to find better deals. You just wait for their sales.

meanwhile physical?
-Can play offline, can play 1.0
-Can be bought with deals from different retailers, can be bought used or sold
-Not tied to any account

Someone might say "but steam!!!!"
but steam is nothing like console stores:
-on steam you have access to files, you can copy or mod the games
-You get cdkeys websites
-Yes, still vulnerable with everything tied to an account
Also, on PC, If someone steals my steam account i can buy ALL my games again for free.

The implosion of Xbox as a brand has been incredible to watch over the last 5 years.

There is nothing they won't do to push Game Pass as much as possible, and when this doesn't work either Microsoft will have to decide whether to just be a publisher of all these expensive developers they've acquired, or sell them and cut their losses.

How some people on here can continue to support the Xbox console platform is beyond me.

Does Phil Spencer have to walk in on your family on Christmas morning and p*** on your kids before you sycophants just give up?

Because its a non issue. Where are the threads about PC physical? The only company I dont really trust with digital is Nintendo. Mainly due to incompetence they have already shown.

The only people who will support this philosophy are shills and apologists. Reasonable people will always want the choice of both physical and digital media.

But it's okay. I will continue to not pay full price for digital games. I will wait for 50% or more off. I'll go to shite GameStop and buy a used physical copy from them first. I'd rather support their shitty business model if I have to choose a shitty business model.
i wouldnt want to buy more expensive hardware by including parts that you and other 11 prople care about.

No shit. Not only that but they are being extremely petty by not allowing Physical on other consoles.

Like I said before their new MO is "If we can't have exclusives, you can't have Physical". Look what they did to the PS5 "physical" release of DOOM, Indy, and probably Gears next. Didn't even bother with Forza Horizon 5...

And now it makes sense why there's no (disc based) Series Xs anywhere to buy

They knee capped the physical aspect of gaming, not surprising people just give up and go digital. If they did proper releases that 10% would grow

That's what MS has always wanted since the introduction of the Xbox One. Take a guess of the idiotic clown that pushed for it? Here is a clue, he's the current CEO of the company.

i wouldnt want to buy more expensive hardware so that you and the other 11 people who care can still enjoy physical

Awwww it's cute that you think them not including a disc drive will lower the price.

76% digital on PlayStation FY24.
it's not per unit but by revenue, includes DLC, currency packs, and small games with no physical release.
It's a intentional misleading report, but it still matters as revenue>>>>>>copies sold

The tweet is presented strangely but PS5 versions have a disc which is why they are listed on VGP. Xbox versions are codes only so VGP doesn't sell them (VGP policy).
Let's wait to see how much is actually on the disc. MS has been releasing "fake" physical lately. Just something to put on retail shelves but nothing really on the disc

I'm okay embracing a digital future. I buy digital games all the time. My issues tend to be with digital pricing and the sustainability of certain stores like the eshop. I enjoy seeing my collection on the shelf, but that's about it with physical games.

Probably requires a download like most of their games but still a disc that you own and can resell, unlike a code.

I grew up with consoles, so it's hard to not want physical over digital. But rising game prices make it hard to want console games, unless they're exclusive. Especially since you can get them on PC cheaper in most cases. So, the physical game collection certainly isn't growing.

I will just say for the people laughing, for once I wasn't joking. You'd have to be a fool to think PS7 will support physical media. Go ahead and make that prediction if you want publicly. No one believes this.

Insert floppy disc 4 of 8.
<--- Original alpha test of Star Wars Galaxies for Alpha 1 that came on 7 CDs

Fun times going through the entire install process only to get an error on disc 5 or 6 and have to restart

Still have my alpha testers kit stored somewhere in all my old gaming stuff

What if PS6 goes that route with their own type of play anywhere with their dedicated handheld?

I'm in my 40s, for all I know I'll be dead when PS7 comes out.

All I know is that Sony, Nintendo and Capcom support physical media with full games in the box and I'll support them in return.

Microsoft and Valve don't, so they can fuck right off!

Luckily we're still on PS5 but thanks for your concern of "Sonytoo two generations from now".

PS6 could. I said PS7 just because by then its a certainty. I also think Sony will have a PC store.

None of that will help people with discs.

I am right there with you, physical media is dying, no one will be stamping discs one day

I will be done with gaming and finish my transition to movie only collecting. On the movie front we have plenty of boutique releases in place of standard studio releases. I worry more about lack of quality 4K blu ray players as brands exit the market and existing brands rarely put out new hardware.

At some point I will stop buying new consoles as well

Bro why are you bringing up hypotheticals when we're talking about a here and now situation?

For all we know we might never get a PS7 to begin with.

FUCKKKK YOUUUU!!

All you who cheered for physical to die, this is your fault. Have fun never having a sale on your digital games. And yes i know some go on sales, but red dead 2 is still $60...you can buy a used physical one for 20 bucks.

Without it referring to Revenue I'm not sure why an investor would care about that number without the revenue attached to it... unless it is there.
they don't actually tell you the actual unit ratio like they did with the Insomniac leak which also showed the same 76% ratio in the same category bracket.
except the units Digital Sold Vs Physical were a different story.
The difference with that leak is it broke everything down to unit's sold Vs revenue which explained the number because the digital sells were exactly 76% of the revenue.
And it said the same thing you posted too.
And even Jaffe didn't deny this and said it's doesn't matter ( for reference I spoke to him regarding his video on the leak and he actually responded 😂 ) because like I said, Revenue>>>>>>>units sold.
The things they don't show don't matter to investors and that's why we don't actually have the numbers like the previous leak report.
Just the stuff that matters..
But I will go with what you've put forward because there's nothing there to dispute it as anything else except what we previously know of what they don't show.
What's odd is it's still 76%...

I don't know about the leak, but FY23 it showed it at 70%.

just out of curiosity, why do you think Capcom despite reports of a higher ratio than that would bother with a physical release of RE2/3/7 on PS5.
Pretty redundant based on the numbers and the fact it actually costs them to do it too.
I'd love to actually see their internal numbers because everything isn't as black & white as it seems.

Does anyone have links to the discussion that happened around the time PC went through this transition?
I'd be interested to know if their was significant push back - I know that I was pretty much thrilled to not to have to worry about messing about with disks anymore, but I wasnt active on any forums back then to know if people were freaking out.

I mean anyone who prefer digital can just go do that. Why is there a personal vendetta against physical media is insanity. Digital only peeps gain absolutely nothing for other people having this option. Jesus!

It's a good question. Still enough physical market share to justify it would be the most obvious answer. Even a low percentage for a franchise that sells multiple millions would bring back plenty of money to make up for the expenses, I would think. Not sure what else there is. Perhaps retail incentives? No clue really.
