I do not blame loyal Xbox fans for feeling burnt over this, but let's be real, its the right move on a pure business level.

They have to sell Xbox with something!

Optimized for Xbox?
Day 1 on Gamepass

That's the current strategy to keep old fans inside the ecosystem. And the likelihood of Gamepass popping up on Playstation, Switch, Steam is minimal. Nobody want to have customers avoiding purchases because they're waiting for a subscription library release on somebody else's service.

They can't back out of that now, even if it's costing them revenue and profits. Only way is if they're prepared for a reset pain and sacrifice a good portion locked in that ecosystem. Thus why they are opening up more and more avenues via third party and diving both feet into the "Xbox PC" paradigm shift.

Lol

It's a trillion dollar company

Xbox Game Studios is just a smaller division of a larger company. I feel like with purchases like Activation and Bethesda, Microsoft doesn't want people to get the wrong impression that those companies are now exclusive to Xbox, given how big their Playstation user bases are. It's a weird situation for Microsoft.

The moment the ink dried on the ABK deal which was ironically championed by the Xbox community, CoD instantly became more important to Microsoft than Xbox.

Think about that CoD became more important to Microsoft than Xbox.

This 70 billion dollar acquisition is more important than Xbox. Xbox does not have a 70 billion dollar valuation. Xbox is probably worth no more than 10-15 billion dollars pre acquisition of Zemimax and ABK.

That puts Microsoft in a position where they have to protect CoD above all else and that means they need a strong relationship with Sony. Sony's actually a bigger customer to Microsoft now than the Xbox community is. That's why BLOPS is being bundled with the PS5 for 400/450 within the same time span of Xbox jacking up Xbox hardware and accessory sales.

They need PlayStation users to keep playing CoD. If all of these players started playing Battlefield or some other game, not only would it destroy the business model that allows annual CoD releases by having multiple studios work on them at once, but the total lost revenue would destroy the valuation of ABK. They were only worth 50 billion when Microsoft bought them (market cap before the premium). With lows in the 30s years prior.

Without a strong CoD, Activision will easily lose more than half of its value...

They have purchased too many companies to sustain them with just revenue coming from xbox and PC, they are going to make a lot more money selling on PS5 and that's why they are in business. If Xbox had sold better this gen and gamepass not trained that player base to "wait for it to be on GP" and actually buy games I'm sure Hell Divers 2 would be on xbox now.

We live in a new gaming world and it does feel strange
And It does not feel "good strange"... luckily this has pushed me to a new hobby and passion.. the piano.. Im spending more and more hours on it in the last 8 months... I guess in a way Sony helped me unlock a new ability I didnt even knew I had.

I love the piano as I took it up a few years ago as well

My first instrument was a guitar that I have been playing for literally 50 years as my family was very music based and they stuck one in my hand as a kid and have been playing ever since

Yeah I already play the drums ... but since I love classic music and had extra time I though to give at a go and I discovered I had some talent for it... learned the 1st movent of the moonlight sonata by myself with 3 months practice and well.. the objective is the third movement in a few years and many lessons 😅

I love play classic and that is such a beautiful song

I have worked hard mastering Fur Elise and literally play it several times a week just to stay locked in

Once you go down these paths with instruments I personally just want to keep improving, kind of a perfectionist and usually too hard on myself

Always love Boogie Woogie on the piano and really enjoy a lot of videos from this guy

Those currently locked into the Xbox ecosystem will have to accept to merge over to PC. But I don't think that's a big deal tbh. There is already a launcher and synced achievements and saves and playtime, it should be a fairly smooth and natural progression. The emulation of older titles is the final puzzle piece there.

But yeah Microsoft is stuck with Gamepass now. That's what they have left. And the subscription numbers stagnated. That's why they need the PlayStation and Switch money. Phil said "We can do big games now" in an interview when talking about spreading out so it's an important part of the strategy.

The big problem is the existing library that a lot of folks have on Xbox that doesn't exist in the Windows store. That's a bigger problem than emulating older titles, imo.

That's a really big problem and one not worth resolving, making this whole exercise fool's game. Microsoft simply has no other answers for how it can compete with Steam head-on so they think if they can bring libraries over or some level of virtualization that that will be enough, but the reality is that people don't functionally care about their libraries as much as forums suggest.

Not really. He had no choice after losing on CoD. He was trying to make console exclusives out of all the zeni and activision games before that.
CoD was never going to be exclusive. It would have instantly gutted Activision minutes after they purchased it.

"Our own hardware? I think it's fundamental to what Xbox is. It's not lost on me that, 'Box' is in the name of our brand"

X-Box.

Play Station-Box
TV-Box
Nintendo-Box
Amazon-Box

Phil always wins when it comes to PR statements.

PlayStation logo is also the Xbox logo...."This is an Xbox" beta tested in the future, has to be the best marketing campaign ever made

Isn't that what the rumored emulation team is supposed to fix? So you can play your existing Xbox library on the Xbox App on PC?
