Glorious. Remember the situation like 5 years ago when it seemed like XCOM and most turn-based gaming was dead, and the best we could hope for was a bastardized third-person shooter with a few callbacks to the old XCOM?

It's crazy how much the industry has changed. I literally can't keep up with the sheer number of amazing turn-based strategy games being released.

Stealth would be an excellent and thematic addition to XCOM; hopefully they take some cues from Invisible Inc.

Indeed, Invisible Inc needs more love. As much as I'm excited for another XCOM, Invisible Inc. is going to give it a serious run for its money as best turn-based squad tactics game of the year,

The main site also gives a bit of set up for the story:

Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces and XCOM, the planet's last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda below and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.

Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to rise from the ashes, expose the insidious truth behind the occupation, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.

it doesnt look like a story-continuation at all from Enemy Within, if i'm guessing right?

20 years in the future, and pretty much everything we did in EU / EW was unsuccessful, and the aliens won. So this is kind of a role reversal, where Xcom are more mobile and fighting against the odd to get Earth back

I'm sure no one gives a shit about the story, but I don't see how the X-rays suddenly take over Earth based on the ending of the first game.

The XCOM website has been updated and has some other small details:

  • The mobile base is called "The Avenger" and is a converted alien ship.
  • There are five classes now — I'm guessing "Ranger" is the new one. They mention "Momentum" as a new class ability.
  • "The state of the world affects each combat mission's environment."
  • "Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols." (YES.)
  • "Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts."
  • You can save fallen soldiers by carrying them to the extraction. (YES.)
  • "There are virtually infinite combinations of map, missions and goals." (YESYESYES.)
  • Also confirms head-to-head multiplayer on generated maps.
Sweet baby Jesus...

This actually all sounds great. I was disappointed the game being teased wasn't a new Bioshock and even more disappointed at the PC exclusivity but it sounds like the game is going to be pretty good for people who do get to play it, which is great.

Unfortunately, I have everything but a gaming PC right now so basically:

PC exclusive? Straight to the trash it goes.

I was really afraid Invisible, Inc. would get largely ignored, and it seems to have happened.

Huh, PC only. Don't see that everyday. Looks great. I never finished the last one but I should. I really enjoyed what I played.

Kinda funny so many people shitting on it being PC only, I gues people are too used to xbox and playstation with maybe a PC version coming out after 6 months to a year (or 3) later and when it's not what they expect they throw a little tantrum.

PC brahs, if I loved EU/EW, what other strategy games would you recommend? For some reason Civ doesn't look like my kind of game.

Jagged Alliance 2 for a true classic, and Invisible Inc for a recent gem. There's also Massive Chalice coming out today, that has a bit simpler combat, but very interesting additions in the strategy layer.

I played xcom with only a wireless mouse on my couch and it felt amazing, hope the ui stays simple enough that a keyboard doesn't become mandatory.

I cant find anby statement of "PC exclusive".

It looks like PC is first, they wont say a word to not piss deliccate public these days; then later on consoles and even tablets

Thanks for the suggestions, guys :D I can't wait for the Steam summer sale. Invisible Inc looks particularly awesome.

Oh God, I hope PC exclusive means the game will actually be hard now.

And then they can just port it over to consoles afterwards.

Loving the clean look.

Thank god for the bolded. The other points sound great as well. Definitely looking forward to this even more.

UI as well. Hopefully they go into this with the mindset that it's a M/KB game that happens to have controller support, compared to the previous one where it was the opposite.

Oh yeah, definitely.

Consoles have USB ports and hard drives. They could make mods work. Unreal Tournament 3 did right?

Well to be fair consoles have done mod support before. Unreal Tournament on PS3 did it.

I get why they are doing this but I think they just want to lead with PC.. other versions will almost certainly come down the line.

for controllers: I played XCOM EU/EW with a mouse on PC, I didn't really see the problem...

Maybe, but the PS4 doesn't support external harddrives and Microsoft hasn't supported mods with their consoles so far, so it seems rather unlikely right now.

And even if they did, wouldn't mods have to go through certification? Seems like a huge hassle to deal with for all sides.

Xenonauts, Invisible Inc, or go down the rabbit hole and get the Long War mod for EU/EW. You can also go back to the original X-COM via OpenXcom, which has features to make that game much better than the original 1994 release.

The graphics and art of these screenshots really bug me. Does not have a unique style and looks so common, bland and uninspiring. Still, I cant wait.

On one hand, YES!! Loved EU/EW, and those new additions sound super interesting.

On the other hand, PC exclusive is a bummer. I hope it does come to consoles eventually, or else I have to pray that my old laptop can run it.

Anyone here complaining about the PC exclusivity need only look at the sales of XCOM to see how this is obviously going to go down.

2015: PC Exclusive
2016, Summer: Tablet Releases
2016, Fall: Console "GOTY" Releases

I was wondering what the hell was going on in that trailer. Not sure if I like that. I remember killing the shit out of the aliens in my XCOM playthrough, after all. But if it lets the story and gameplay mechanics go to some weird places I'm all for it

Really? I thought Firaxis managed to give the previous game a really dinstict artstyle that really gave the game a strong identity, and this seems to build on that in a really good way.
