They won't be announcing a console version at E3. If they were they would have just saved the entire reveal for E3 and there'd be no reason for all of this within a 2 week time frame

I'm guessing it will come to consoles eventually unless they hate money.

they didn't make much money when they released it on consoles last time

probably figured it was better to focus on the main platform where the series sells and hope that leads to enough extra sales to offset the smaller group of people who want it on console.

Firaxis will do a livestream tomorrow.

That's 18:30 UK time. I'll be tuning in!

I'm guessing it will come to consoles eventually unless they hate money.

I think I've posted this on every page; this is getting explained this week, possibly tomorrow - "And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive, and how XCOM 2 will be tailored to take advantage of that single platform’s strengths – followed by Firaxis’ exciting plans to support modders and their work."

Furthermore though, you could have the same argument for every game only on PC. Particularly Civ. Console versions do come though, such as Civ Rev, that are more suited to a consoles than traditional Civ and all it's intricacies. If they are taking Xcom in such a direction, it is always possible that the do an Xcom akin to Civ Rev, but whatever is happening with Xcom 2 is likely for good reason

Enemy Unknown and the Complete Edition are 75% off on Steam right now for anyone who hasn't played it yet.

Buy it and play it immediately.

they also released it on disc to consoles last time which also added to the costs of that version. Digital only port this time would be the smart play.

Apocalypse has a special place in my heart. But this game has to be a very different beast form the IMO disappointing 2012 remake to make me interested. I'm hoping the PC exclusivity is the first sign of that.

Hopefully if they do controller support for this one it doesn't affect the kb/m controls. They need separate UI and to not having annoying snapping and what not when using a mouse.

How is the content delievered? Who hosts it? Who approved it? On Steam, all of these issues have turnkey answers provided by the service's platform infrastructure. Firaxis would have to develop a system of delivery entirely on their own and find a a way to do so without the hardware makers throwing a fit. Not worth it.

So many of questions and exclamations of how consoles can do mods just fine for a game like XCOM, shows me how console-centric this forum is and how limited their exposure to the entire PC modding environment is.

It seems, cosmetic changes and custom maps are the limit of what most poeple on this forum see out of Mods.

There's a reason why it didn't catch on after UT3.

I'm sure there's a game out there that can eventually bring mods to consoles and make the idea mainstream but it's not going to be something like XCOM leading the charge. It's just too low budget.

If anyone's going to lead that charge it's likely Bethesda. Or Microsoft with Minecraft.

I wonder if it'll be a Windows 10 deal.

Could be, but I am doubtful. If they are involving modding support, it is either Steam or their own thing. If they use Workshop, it pretty much won't work well on any other service outside of Steam

As long as my PC can handle this, I'm in.

Same problem haha. I'd hopefully have a new system by them, but if not, hopefully it is super scalable

Love how the XCOM revival starts with a multformat, but console focused, FPS, and is now at a PC exclusive strategy game with outspoken mod support. :)

I don't know how many of you have played them, but the UFO:After series (Aftermath, Aftershock, Afterlight) had a similar premise where humans were fighting back to win the earth. Fun games, although they haven't aged that gracefully.

Oh man. I was hyped before but knowing now that it's a PC exclusive... yeah buddy. They're already talkin about mods too. Yes yes. Yessssss.

Wow. Such awesome news. Particularly modding. Still hope for controller support. Hopefully with this the drive to simplify is done and we can get a better experience.

As for console gamers...you know a "complete" or "enhanced" version will be coming sometime down the line, right?

The game was made for a controller more or less. If you played with one on PC you may have not noticed.

Eh the UI was a little fiddly. What annoyed me to no end was when I would click an area and it would run down 2 levels instead of up 1 or just not want to make the bounding box go where I wanted to move unless I massaged the camera and pixel hunted the damn thing. Lol

I know what is going to happen. They release it on PC first, then they are going to wait ~ 1 year for the modding community to improve the game and then they're going ot release the game on consoles with selected mods.

The Golf Club seems to have solved the issue of user made maps and populating them across all versions... not sure why Xcom would be different.

All done in the safe sandbox of the in-game map maker, right?

Civ 5, another Firaxis product, has mods that actually re-implement the game's existing source code. I'm not talking about just writing extensions to the game using the game's mod tools and mod function hooks/APIs, I'm talking about people taking some of the game's source (released by Firaxis), updating it, and including the compiled libraries as part of their mod releases.

Incredibly disappointing news. Loved the last XCOM but my Mac isn't going to run the inevitable late port. So I guess no XCOM 2 for me.

PC ONLY WHAT THE FUCK NOOOO

I actually preferred EU on console, this is a fucking dagger to the heart

I had surgery today but the most painful needle to my gut was from Firaxis :(

I'm sure no one gives a shit about the story, but I don't see how the X-rays suddenly take over Earth based on the ending of the first game.

Assuming this is following on from the good ending instead of a game over, I'd wager it has something to do with the Volunteer mind controlling the world's governments en masse. They wouldn't have bothered mentioning that he survives the ending recently if it weren't important, especially since it looks like he's at ground zero in the game itself.

Hard to say why he'd turn the planet over, though. The Uber Ethereal was banging on about "what lies ahead", so it's possible that there's some greater threat out there that humanity still isn't ready for. If the Volunteer had a premonition of that via the psychic hivemind or whatever, he might've decided that setting the world up to continue the alien/human conflict was the best way to keep humanity's development progressing, rather than let the war die and the species stagnate again.

The XCOM website has been updated and has some other small details:

  • The mobile base is called "The Avenger" and is a converted alien ship.
  • There are five classes now — I'm guessing "Ranger" is the new one. They mention "Momentum" as a new class ability.
  • "The state of the world affects each combat mission's environment."
  • "Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols." (YES.)
  • "Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts."
  • You can save fallen soldiers by carrying them to the extraction. (YES.)
  • "There are virtually infinite combinations of map, missions and goals." (YESYESYES.)
  • Also confirms head-to-head multiplayer on generated maps.

Seems like it will be a massive improvement over the first game. Couldn't be more excited.

20 Years later though; whole manner of shit could happen in that time span

Those screens have an ipad vibe.
Not my franchise though, give me sid meier's stuff, railroads 2 please!

When did Xcom need to become some sort of graphical pinnacle? It's all about the gameplay and mechanics. It could look like Dota 2 or Sunless Sea and probably would do just fine

Wow pretty surprised at the salt and port begging in this thread. Didn't think many console gamers care about XCOM.

It was free on PS+ and won a lot of fans. I know I had no interest in it, but got it for "free" and went why not. Played it, loved it, looking forward to this game, now I can't play on my system of choice.

I mean, they can do what they want, but it is upsetting.

I'm sure there are also a ton of people burned that they liked Uncharted 3 on PS3 and can't play Uncharted 4 on the same platform.
