Psi reanimate? Oh, what the fuck.

I hope it's not as brutal as it sounds, because if it really does let them just get back up again, that's going to be bloody insane.

Hive queen (boss chryssalid) in LW. Yes, that is 54 hp - on normal difficulty anyway. Add some hp the higher the difficulty and alien research (basically the further into the campaign you are).

Oh don't worry, they all died in the same turn they showed up. LW doesn't make everything outrageous for aliens without giving you tools to tackle them. You just have to wombo combo. Shredder rocket + flamethrower + grenades + focus fire. Remember in LW you have 8 man squads and many more force multipliers.

shit maybe I should install it and revisit XCOM

That sounds powerful, but I really hope XCOM can get it, too. Killing an alien, then reanimating it to take on the enemy sounds useful. Or for a more bitter version, reanimating a fallen XCOM soldier because you still need his abilities to do something.

I wonder if we can gib things. For purely tactical reasons, you understand.

I think free aim was confirmed?

Being able to blast away cover could be useful in those instances when you can't shoot an alien but you could take out their cover for when they try to make their next move. Force them to get into the open.

Also, blasting the fuck out of cars and gas tanks without resorting to explosives.

When I said 'gib things' I should have said 'gib enemies'. Not necessarily reducing them to meaty chunks in jelly but something similar to the way you get no loot from exploded enemies in EU, perhaps units killed by explosions or fire can't be resurrected.

Son, I have finished the original Enemy Unknown (as the 1994 game was known in Europe) and Terror from the Deep multiple times. I was 10 years old when I first started playing these games; I grew up on Time Units. And I still believe that Firaxis's blue/yellow move system is probably their greatest gift to the series.

Either you lied, or you must have been pretty shit at playing the original games son. Surely you've had those times in EU/EW where you take just 1 step into the yellow zone and activate a pod that runs right up to your flank and you're fucked? If this were the TU system, you would still have the opportunity to move back into cover. Or when you have only one move and the designated path leads right through a poison cloud? Again, with TUs, you could just go around the cloud, and probably still have enough TU to get a shot.

Yes calculating TUs may be tedious (not for me), but it also means you have complete control over each and every soldier. A veteran can have enough TUs to reload and fire in the same turn without having to have Lock n' Load, or move out of cover to take a shot and move back out of LOS without having to have Hit and Run.

Not trashing the way Firaxis streamlined it in EU/EW. I love it and LW to death. But calling the TU system "outdated" or terrible is pretty stupid IMO. It's a different system employed in a different kind of game. End of story.

Playing Enemy Within with Long War, I really hope 2 has more soldier customization and personalization. Maybe even take a leaf out of Valkyria Chronicles' book and implement some kind of friendship system so particular members perform better when fighting with people they get on with?

Nah. Part of the appeal of XCOM is that your units are yours, first and foremost. You get to define every little thing about them.

Though I would like to see a mod that picks up stuff like that, turns it into more of a character-based SRPG.

Any word on Coop or Hot Seat multiplayer?

I think that maybe I don't know what hotseat multiplayer is, because AFAIK that just involves getting up and letting the other guy play, lol.

And I don't think we're gonna be getting anything new this week, on account of E3.

Basically just taking turns making moves in multiplayer. So the only thing they could do for coop multiplayer anyways.

Yeah, a lot of scripting and short cutscenes in that demo, which is disconcerting but probably just for demo purposes.

Also the soldiers aren't leaning against cover properly. I don't know whether that's a demo thing or not, but it looked weird.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised for the E3 gameplay reveal, but I'm a little frustrated at the lack of info on the strategy layer. Ambushing, hacking, and choosing an evac point are all neato, but I'm a little concerned these features are coming at a cost of streamlining the long-game decisions.

That was a good demo and great interviewing skills by Dan.

That said, I was mindblown when the Berserker was revealed to be a woman.
Wonder if there's enough of a hardcore misogynistic XCOM fanbase to piss off, or do they all just make weird sex jokes instead like they do with the Viper?

Those new animations. Those huge explosions. Those baddies dropping out from nowhere. Those bigass new enemies. DAT HACKING.

Edit: Evac zones sound too powerful, but maybe the game could allow them at the expense of temporally losing two soldiers during a mission.

Uh seems to have a lot of enemies spawning out of nowhere and killing your soldiers within a the same turn. Not very fair.

Let's all take a moment here to pause and appreciate the way that the grenade toss UI was fluid and quick and precise, and didn't go herky-jerky trying to snap to a Advent troop or randomly spazzing out like it would in EW.

Also I can barely remember the time a single grenade made a car explode. I feel I will have to "un-learn" some Long War things when playing XCOM2 when it comes out.

In the interview they clearly mention that the mechanics were adjusted to make the demo as quick and fast-paced as possible. Not a fan of that decision but necessary for E3.

Game looks amazing! Much better in motion than in screenshots, and the new combat systems are fantastic. The objective variety is very sweet as well, hit-and-run attacks ftw.

Honestly, I always thought they were a little too stingy with terrain destruction in LW.

I like how XCOM isn't so clearly good vs. the clearly bad aliens. Blowing up stuff and using live rounds in a crowded civilian gathering is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Noble ends, dubious means suits the game well. Not really grimdark because you know the aliens are assholes, but at the same time you aren't playing mr. nice guy either.

That's like Propaganda 101.

Call me back when you start pulling false flag attacks.
