Hey I have a question for you guys...

So I started playing last night, I'm still very early in the game. I just finished building the containment facility and the arc thinghy... Is it normal that I can't build/buy anything from engineering? When I go see my engineer the camera zoom in with the dude on the right but there's no menu on the left.

Did I missed something?

That's definitely a bug. There should be a menu there.

I was hoping it would be a blaster launcher or something, but I didn't find one. The most I got was rocket skills via leveling up.

There is a plasma launcher in the game and it´s totally awesome. If i remember correctly you have to find some power core or something on a ufo-battleship. It also let´s you research the best weapons for the firestorm.

Oh man... The council decided to send me a bomb disposal mission and everything up to this point went very smooth. Even the mission itself went well apart from a quick kill of one of my veterans at the beginning. But then I kill every Thin Man that spans and the only alien remaining is 1 sectiod. After missing about 12(!!!) 50% shots in a row the sectoid killed my remaining 3 guys and I lost. WUT? He has got to be an alien HERO now.

Very curious what they are going to do with DLC in this game, since its a far cry from most of the genres that are dlc driven right now. Some ideas..

- Commendations DLC

Gives the ability for soldiers to earn medals in missions. Maybe each medal gives the player a will boost, or some other stat boost.

- Defend your base DLC

Would make it possible for your base to come under attack, prompting base defense missions

- Advanced training

Would put another rank above colonel, with 2 new abilities to choose from for each class

- Advanced research

Creates new tiers of armor and weapons above plasma, and in addition adds content after the final mission to account for increased soldier power. This would be tricky to sell since it would require someone be far into the game to access it.

Just curious what you guys think they will do for DLC, think that there are a lot of creative things they could do with this game, and im psyched to see where it goes!

Minor improvements that could be easily patched in

1) Choose your own defauolt armour tint/type
2) Ability to choose helmets by default
3) Automatically send equipment to the locker after missions
4) Better stat-tracking (Total damage taken, total enemies killed, total missions etc)

Why does reloading take both moves?

edit: Cheers guys :)

First mission with those cyberdisc, every things go very well, only 2 injured soldier ( not even lost half their life ).
But.. when the mission endend ( meaning the result ( number of death etc ) already on screen ), my commando ( only 2nd class since the last one died horribly ) decide to panic and kill one of my best soldier.

So the official result of the mission was : 0 death on my side, but once at my base I end up with an incomprehensible death.....

I just noticed that if you played the demo and then bought the full game, the demo disappears from your steam library, but the files are still in your Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown-Demo folder. If you want to reclaim those lost gigabytes, you can delete the folder.

What would you guys recommend as a starting difficulty for someone who has no XCOM experience before? I'm thinking normal ironman?

just normal,enable autosave.

prety sure if you didnt play xcom you will make some costly mistakes only because you are not familiar.
learn the game first...
manually save at the begining of every mission.

I'm brand new to XCOM too - I played a normal game (no ironman) for about 4-5 hours, then restarted on normal ironman. Mostly because I missed the option to go ironman at the beginning (it's under Advanced options), but it also helped because I was still learning not only how base building, cover, and other assorted metagame functions work, but also the finer points and quirks of the UI (e.g., accidentally going to a wrong cover spot, fumbling how to heal other soldiers, etc.). I think having the tutorial on also give you a benefit in that you end up with one stronger soldier as a result, but it limits your choice of starting base to compensate.

I am actually wondering if it's possible to not lose any countries in Classic mode.
Money's always tight, you either have too few satellites or your interceptors are too weak...
Also is carapace armor + laser weaponry enough to assault the alien base? I've been holding it off for a month now, is this a good idea? Does the alien base mission help worldwide panic levels at all?

The game is still awesome. I was stressed to see so many countries in crisis, but was relieved when I saw that
attacking the alien base lowered all of them. I was so close to loosing 4 countries!

So far I save compulsively so I reload anytime someone dies. It does take away from the stress of death, but for my first run I just want to have fun instead of loosing.

Doing autopsies and interrogations often lead to bonuses in other research areas. I think it is better to do those research items first, then other research will go faster due to the bonus from previous research. Autopsies and interrogations also do not take that long to research.

Autopsies almost always lead to new technology in the Foundry. Interrogations almost always lead to research bonuses.

Terror from the deep-content as DLC. Including new maps, weapons and aliens (crabmen) + melee combat (those drills).

Any new content DLC: any new content with a new campaing and above changes. Could sell large DLCs like these for 15-20$.

Maybe country specific DLC with campaigns with different organisation. For example local Russian, Chinese or Indian X-com section defending their country. I find that the worldwide locations in the original game are so generic it would be more interesting with more local maps

Adding more perks and commendation or items without new content would break the game.

Why am I downloading almost 2GB of data with no patch notes? I'm tired of devs no longer putting up patch notes on Steam :(

Procedural map generation. This is still a huge loss and I would love to see it return. I can't understand why this wasn't a top priority during development. Strategy games live on longevity and replays after all.

But it's probably a logistical nightmare. I doubt we'll see it without a sequel, if ever.

Ahh damn I just realized I'm doing a UFO mission with 3 of my top guys out of commission. My Colonel rank Assault guy is undergoing psi training and my other 2 are wounded, so I'm going out there with 3 guys at rank 2, my support guy and my 2 god-tier snipers. I have a feeling the snipers will be doing most of the work in the next mission.

I took down my first Cyberdisk and its drones without a scratch, only to lose my OG Assault trooper to some damn Floaters.

RIP Captain Jens 'Smash' Lambert. May your Guile hair remain fabulous in the afterlife.

Also, it's becoming a bit of a running gag for my Support soldiers to get owned. Physician, heal thyself.

thinking about double dipping on the PS3 version when it gets cheaper. How is the PS3 version compared to the PC.

I do not think graphics will be an issue since graphics are more functional than great. But how are loading times and anything other that might be worse on the PS3?

Also, I am really missing the geoscape focus from the first game with the possibility to raid bases and track UFOs. They really have slimmed down this part of the game to something too simple. It has become to streamlined. I mean there is only one alien base in the game and it is strictly something scripted you only do once to advance the story. The alien threat do not appear to be controlled by AI in the geoscape but just driven by the story with some missions and ufos being random elements.

Final mission:

Considering you're
required to bring a psionic soldier, the mission sure is easy as shit with mind control abuse. Even if my assault soldier hadn't obliterated the boss ethereal in one rapid fire double crit, I had taken over both their muton elites and had my whole team in position. But apparently killing the big boss makes everybody evaporate...except my MCed mutons, we all had to kinda mill about awkwardly waiting for MC to run out. And then they crumbled into purple dust. Okay.

Classic Ironman time. Normal really was too damn easy. Only lost 4 soldiers, 3 of which were early game rookies and 1 was a psionic who learned the hard way why you should NEVER TAKE THE FUCKING PANIC ABILITY. SERIOUSLY DON'T DO IT.

Okay, I already said that this game is buggy as hell, but it's getting ridicolous here.
I encounter a bug on every screen.

Simple UI bugs like menus not closing and staying there overlapped with every other menu you open and plastered on your geoscape even when it's turning and while you are loading a mission (thankfully they don't stay in the mission) and happening basically every time I'm navigating through menus for more than 2 minutes.
Spending bugs where the game charges me the price of a facility I'm bulding everytime I go in the Build facility menu (only happened once, thankfully).
Soldiers being killed in action and staying as KIA zombie troops that you can use in missions and are basically units that refresh at the end of every mission.
Facilities being preserved after I closed one playthrough and started another, giving me a Officers Room right from the start in the same spot I had it in the previous game (quite far from the other starting buildings).
Soldier models not loading properly so every soldier looks like a specific one in the Barracks or sometimes a head goes missing in the missions.
All buttons and menus disappearing leaving me in the ant view without ui (not even the options menu) and unable to do anything other than Alt-F4 out of the game.

Now I've lost my 2 best Heavies because the game decided that they are permanently wounded, and like the KIA zombie bug, this makes them undismissable but doesn't let you use them, so I've lost a big chunk of my firepower. It isn't the first time this wounded bug happens to me, but last time it was only one soldier, this time all the ones that were wounded at the time became like this. Might be a saving/loading issue because it happened after I had to alt-f4 out of the game due to of one of the bugs mentioned before.

The demo was a lot of fun so I will definitely get this game sometime this year. Any notable differences between the PS3 and 360 versions?

Well, I just experienced my first game breaking bug. In the middle of a escort mission, just as thin men began to fall from the sky, the controls crapped out and wouldn't even let me bring the options menu. I had to exit to the desktop with alt+tab and kill XCOM.

I was playing Ironman, so thank god the save file wasn't corrupted.

For me the SHIV bugs are the most prominent. Which is annoying 'cause I love the SHIVs.

Have built and dismantled 3 alloy SHIVs that just show the blank screen in Barracks, and are undeployable. Built one hover SHIV that wouldn't fire, and became the world's most expensive portable cover unit.

You can only interrogate each type of alien once. Capturing more allows you to take their weapons intact, but that's it.
And I can't use those weapons, can I?

I haven't played PC but the PS3 version is fine. The only thing I wish for is an option to zoom in on the action to see more detail.

Of course you can...once you research them.

Anyways I haven't seen any bugs worse than camera freakouts since the patch. Prepatch I lost control of my units a couple times requiring me to alt-F4, and I encountered the 'endless alien activity' bug once.

I lost control of one of my snipers (possible late game equipment spoiler)
when he was mid-flight with the Archangel Armor
. I had to force the game to close and reload the save. Now I can't change his armor colour.
Also, the jets are always on, leaving a smoke trail behind him when he moves.

Hey can someone tell me how you gain the alien grenades, and the plasma launcher? I'm assuming they are live captures or something as I sort of gave up on those after that sociopath scientist lady stopped insisting.

edit - I will say that apart from the SHIVs acting weirdly, I haven't had any real bugs. camera drifted off-world at one point but it came back about 10 seconds later. nothing game-breaking (on Boot Camped iMac).

I would like this as well along with some more camera angles for whenever your solider shoots and some more stuff for them to say.

I want a mod with Kif's sigh from Futurama every time a chrysalid rams its ovapositor down someone's throat.

the swallow sound effect is so fucking gross. :)

You can get them by capturing certain aliens, like Mutons, or you can research them in the foundry to get an unlimited supply. That said, you should try to interrogate one of each type of stunnable alien for the sweet rewards.

ok thanks. next question: which aliens are not stunnable? I assume cyberdisks and the repair drones? sectopods? anyone else?

also I'd like to hear opinions on which class the archangel armour suits best...

Do you know how Classic Ironman feels like?

Let me make an comparison:

First time doing anal with your boyfriend (yes, you are the girl now), he use some lube on his fingers... one in, feels good, two in... mmm nice... some wiggling... damn this is good.

Then out of fucking nowhere a 5 feet monster penis is rammed in your asshole, you can feel it itching in your throat, who doesn't stop untill you shatter and have two assholes.

And no, it ain't finished yet, it fucking turns you around, ramms it down your throat and completes the shattering with you being in two peices.

Thats X-Com.
