XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

Game is so amazing and incredibly frustrating. I hope they come out with some sort of co-op functionality as an expansion. Maybe built into the sequel.
I'd be happy with a co op skirmish mode (pick a map, your dudes and pick what types of enemy will populate the map, and at what density and difficulty.)

Well, it's over. After vowing to never restart classic ironman mode again, regardless of what happens, I've finally seen the end screen. Unfortunately for earth, it wasn't the end screen we needed.

It all turned sour when I ended up getting most of my main crew injured during a battle over a crashed UFO. After that, I just didn't have the resources to stock an effective fighting force and ended up in a constant retreating battle for the rest of my days.

Is there any chance of convincing a country that withdraws to come back?

I don't think you can get them back

And if it's like the original game they've entered into a secret pact with the aliens to limit their own destruction at the expense of the rest of the world (and the expendable majority of their own population). You don't want filthy backstabbing traitors to the entire human race on your team, do you? The only good collaborator is a dead collaborator!

I just lost my best soldier, Rick Dagless M.D., sniper extraordinaire. I'll pour some of this private stock out for you, Rick.

Haha, fair enough. It was France and they didn't even give me time to respond to their outcries.

I don't have a lot to add to the discussion, but may I say that this is an utterly amazing game and I'm totally in love with it? I was finally able to buy it and I missed most of the football games and a major MTG protour to play this.

Had to learn the hard way that auto save was not enabled....that'll teach me to reset after somebody dies. I haven't a single complaint about the game so far, though I am not very far in it.

if you ever needed more proof that this game is just fucking you over the entire time you play it.

Things were going well. Too well I guess, so XCOM being XCOM decided to keep rolling the dice until I got fucked over on a mission.

Really simple little abduction, it was kinda cool as it was on the top of a few skyscrapers but unfortunately I didn't look at the map layout well enough and had my best support in what looked like cover after the first turn. But there was a little corner of the map open just behind what I considered the edge of the map, and sure enough 3 mutons spawn there and gun him down with perfect long range shots. So lame.

Then in a rage I kill everything, one last muton in the open and I basically run into him with my SHIV to bait a shot from him... but he ignores the 3 close enemies in cover and takes a fucking one-in-a-million double headshot to my best sniper Enigma from halfway across the map. :(

RIP Hitch and Enigma. Operation Cold Dream will always be the most viscous of curses to me.

Bounced back pretty well, playing on normal obviously. I'm still bummed that my two favourite soldiers - a matched pair of male and female Canadian snipers, both Colonels - were split up. The surviving 'Solo' (cruelly ironic nickname suddenly) now has surpassed Enigma's 50 kills, but I like to think he spends most nights in the barracks getting piss drunk Jeremy-Renner-in-Hurt-Locker style to forget the death of his one true love. He never even had a chance to tell her how he felt, he felt it was inappropriate with the Earth under alien invasion and was waiting until after the war to let her know.

Well at least my first colonel, the Argentinian Heavy 'Boom-Boom' Marquez is still going strong. The only surviving member of my original squad as far as I can tell, he's twice been punched in the face by berserkers and lived with 1 or 2 health left. Still a total boss, check out what he did a couple of missions ago:

Finnished on normal non ironman. By the end i think it was a little bit easy not that it was a complete breaze but i felt i was in control most of the time.

I had started a couple of classic ironman runs previously but bailed on them due to wtf crits all my dudes are dead but I'm going to give one a full playthrough now, no other games until i win or die trying.

The game hasn't even been out a week and it's not exactly a short game. And many won't try classic on their first playthrough.

Not that it will ever been a high %.

I just started my Classic run today. The game is a lot more fun this way.

Also, squaddies dying. :lol

Well, that's it. I'm buying this game. It seems imagining stories for each soldier is awesome as heck. And a bit depressing too!

Oh I'm sure it's been mentioned by one really annoying thing for me is how the game works when multiple soldiers are on Overwatch. Having both snipers shoot the same guy every time is annoying, but the bomb missions are especially irritating. I take the time to spread out my squad and go into overwatch before defusing and then 5 aliens drop down and EVERYONE wastes shots on the same enemy if they are in range. Wish it would do it more logically, like one soldier shoots then another only if the enemy is still alive, perhaps it could be a trainable skill.

Just realized there's items that are used by ships in combat and there's weapons you have to go to the hangar, click on and then change out. Wish I'd realized this 8 hours ago, derp.

Pretty sure the Overseer ship needs to be taken down with an upgraded Aircraft as well. It's called a Firebrand or something similar.

I wish I knew that screenshots were F12 in Steam when this amazing faceoff occurred in a terror map. Went down in Argentina, parking lot of a multi-story structure. My squad-sight equipped Israeli hottie "Ice" immediately on overwatch with her sniper rifle at the ready with 2 heavies on either side. Moved my rifleman and support against car cover on the sides and my assault forward to trigger any potential threat. 4-5 cryssalids explode from the windows of the building, cyberdisc with an escort move forward from the fog of war on the left flank.

The enemy has shown no fear and moved directly in front of my squad which I now realize is in a perfect wedge formation. It was like two rival gangs meeting up after school to brawl, but with automatic and plasma weaponry. Support throws down smoke to cover and enhance the will and crit of the entire squad, heavies bring the rocks out and fire directly into the wave of invaders. Disc is now at half health, 3 cryssalids down. Ice headshots the disc, taking it out of the game while a laser equipped rifleman finishes a wounded insect-like horror. Assault crits and takes down another cryssalid, additional sniper "Ghost" 1 shots the disc escort. Smoke clears and we're all that's left standing, green blood and wrecked machinery fills this parking lot.

This game.

It's not required, you just need some luck and to use all of those one-time use items. I took down the Oversheer ship with a normal interceptor and an EMP cannon.

So...my most recent attempt on Classic Ironman

122 Days Survived
18 Battles Fought
14 Battles Won
4 Battlers Lost
106 Aliens Killed
39 Soldiers Lost (last playthrough I lasted 2.5 months and lost 58 soldiers)
Average Shot % - 55%
Average Damage Per Shot - 4.0

Cyberdiscs and Mutons...ha...what a bunch of murderous fucks they are.

Deus Ex + Unreal

I finished Classic - after three iron man wipes, the game gets hilariously easy in the lategame, aliens stand no chance.

If you want to break the game completely:

Abuse Ghost armor + Battle Scanner and Squadsight snipers. Nothing can stand up to it, the AI doesn't know how to react to getting shot from across the map and just sits around until it dies or walks into your overwatch crew.

Since I'm a sissy I'll try that

Finally took down a battleship, in 3 shots too. Then I saw the crew size and was like "...maaaan". 23 enemies. Easiest is thin men but the rest are a mix of ethereals, mutons and elites, beserkers and heavy floaters.

Someone mentioned that overwatch only triggers until it deals fatal damage. The dice is rolled up front even though sniper animation takes longer to appear.

Watching other people play, I've seen an alarming number of 90%+ attack and stuns miss. It doesn't seem right.

To an extent, you can play around these via items and yellow cooldown abilities, which are largely non-probablistic. But once you get mid-game you should not be taking 5% risks with your best soldier's lives.

Non-council nations still have troops in XCOM. I had Malachi Rosenberg from Israel once, for example, along with some Greek guy with a very Greek name. I know I've had a South Korean squaddie once, last name was Park I believe which is fine.

Finally got this game so please excuse my inexperience but when can I capture enemies? The scientist keeps frikkin' bugging me about it but I can't seem to do the task.

Am I missing something or does this game make it very difficult to ignore missions. Do I really have to wait until time passes normally and the mission expires or is there some way to speed up time and just skip it right away?

You don't remember all the ones that hit. In other news I did make it through 2 missions of impossible. It isn't fun, though.

I had the Outsider boxed in a corner, both of my guys stood next to him, both of them were squaddies, both of them missed with him having 0 cover.

You should be able to press "scan for activity" and the mission will go away.

NOPE NOPE NOPE. Fuck Ethereals. I remember Ethereal base invasions in XCOM...-sobs-

I haven't had a hard time with one yet. The worst is when they randomly decide to deflect shots back at me, but really their health and defense is pretty low for my top level plasma weapons.

My battleship mission actually ended with me successfully capturing the lone Ethereal since it just happened to be the last one. I was pretty proud of myself, it was the first one I managed to grab.

Just wait

More than 1 at once would be a problem since they like to possess my guys. When there's only 1 and they get a possession off I can usually kill it in the next turn before my possessed guy can do any damage to me but more than 1 Ethereal could complicate things quickly even with my 2 double tap snipers.

Haven't been following the thread, but have there been any good ini or other tweaks to increase the visuals or just performance in general? I have a GTX 480, 3570k and the game runs smooth at max settings. I am wondering if it can be pumped up a bit through ini tweaking.
