If snipers are OP, then what about my assault who did it in one rapid fire?

The real final boss is that Sectopod duo. Not looking forward to that on classic.
I've played on classic :), he always reflects second volley, so You cant kill him with one troop. He got critical hit for 19, he reflected next one and third hit him for 10 i think.

And about spoiler part, i've killed them in one turn, but it was quite risky move :) Firaxis trolled us with theirs location ;p

I'm reading about this game and looks fantastic, but I don't know if I will enjoy the combat system. Is it similar to the Valkyria Chronicles system?

Thanks!!

Anyone knows how defense scales? 1 defense = 1% lower accuracy rating for aliens or what?

You know that snipers are OP when:

in final 'battle', You kill Ethereal with 3 shots without AI can even start any movement, and killing him ends game :p

Double tap, plasma rifle + scope and squad sight is too op.

===

Few hours.
You only have to kill the one guy? Or did you play on normal?Because Before I died I saw at least 2 Ethereals in the room
Oh didn't see the other reply yet. nvm

I finally lost a squad member on my normal ironman game. It shouldn't have happened though. Just the way of ironman. I had a support I was training and he got critically injured (this was only his 3rd mission, poor guy). Where he got injured the cover had broken and there was a bezerker and 2 mutons nearby. So I dropped a smoke grenade with my second support one turn, moved her just within the circle second turn. Oops, doesn't seem to be close enough. Third turn the bezerker and mutons are dead and I move my second support right over top of his body. I hit the button to heal and it's not working. WTF. I hit the hotkey a few more times and I end up accidentally healing the person trying to restore the injured guy. ARGH.

He died. I later observed that there is a separate hotkey for stabilizing a critically injured soldier. Oops. That explains that. Not fair. :(

Anyways. On to a quick question regarding archangel armor. When the heck can I research it? I seem to be out of research. I'm at the point where:

I've destroyed the alien base, researched the beacon and I'm building the beacon right now. I have ghost armor, titan, skeleton, foundry, psi labs, all plasma weapons but no arch angel. Is it a capture thing? I narrowly missed stunning an enhanced floater in a terror mission, was thinking that might be it.

It'll my my already very strong sniper that much better.

You need to
research the advanced interceptor. Hope you got a lot of weapon fragments.

Anyways I have a question about the final mission:
Does Rift work on Sectopods? Or are mechanical enemies immune? I only ever used it on the thin men at the start 'cause I forgot I had it.

Just had a group of heavy floaters spawn next to my heavy, in line of sight out of nowhere. Anyone had this happen to them?

If I remember correctly, yes. It is the last mission after-all.

Just tried the demo and my PS3 froze, had to hard reset it. Now I'm worried about buying the full version. Is this a known problem or was it just bad luck?
Freezes can happen (on all platforms), but in general the game is not especially unstable, it's not a common problem. More like bad luck :)

I actually found the story pretty good for a free form game. It gives just enough world building (The 3 main NPC's help with this) while justifying the "War" with the Aliens in an interesting way that explains away why they didn't just... Like... Drop asteroids or overwhelm from the start.

Sounds like fanboy talk.

I recall one of the devs saying that, after the mod tools are released, he expects someone to make a 1:1 remake of the original. Maybe these bloggers just misinterpreted the statement.

2 things I think would greatly improve world/mood/atmosphere: More information about the global struggle and more information (via video or wall of text) about the origins of the XCom project. You can dig around to find both those things, but to be effective they really ought to be more pronounced.

I'd say the series influenced each other in parts.
Original X-Com was a pretty obvious influence on VC - and this new game uses some of the concepts that worked in VC. Different systems, but similar enough that if you like one you're likely to find fun in the other.

More importantly though - unlike VC where meta-game is a forgettable afterthought - it's a core-part of what makes XCom work.

Damn this game is addicting. I'm already on my second run, the first one didn't go so well. Some choice moments from my first run:

I downed my first large UFO, but it cost me an Interceptor. I sent in a relatively experienced squad and they made short work of a group of thin men near the entrance. Next turn I put all my men/women into position so that I can open one of those big doors next turn. The last move I made was putting a female soldier near the door close to the middle ramp. Bad idea, as three Chryssalids spawned on the ramp and swarmed her, killing her in the alien turn. Everyone pulled back and concentrated their fire on the Chryssalids, killing them before they could massacre more of my troops. Unfortunately they forgot to keep track of their former comrade, who shambled towards them, hitting one, leaving him with just one HP. But alas, he was poisoned and succumbed the next turn. I had three men left, but decided to press forward. I soon hit a squad of Mutons, none survived.

It took me a while to recover from this loss. Yet I got a new crew. The most notable one was a Russian Assault specialist, who as the last man standing managed to kill a fresh squad of three Mutons and saved the day!

Anyway, a large UFO had landed somewhere in Europe. I remembered my previous expedition, so I was rather paranoid. Once I reached those big doors, I advanced very, very closely, making sure I would not get caught off guard again. Because I didn't see anything through the left door, I decided to retreat to the entrance and go for the right door. Just to be sure I wouldn't get attacked from behind, I sent my Canadian medic ("Doc") to have a look on the far left side of the craft. BAM, three Chryssalids, goodbye my Canadian friend :(
After dispatching the Chryssalids, I took a detour over the roof of the craft, reached and secured the control room. I saw two Mutons and a Berzerker outside, so I figured that I could put two soldiers on overwatch guarding the entrance while my sniper would go on the roof. When the berzerker rushed in, he didn't go through the entrance. He went straight through the UFO wall and smashed my Support to bits in the process. To make matters worse, my two guys inside missed their shots and were running low on ammo, with a full health berzerker inside. Luckily the berzerker didn't manage to kill anyone, but he beat one member (my Heavy) pretty badly.
Ran into more Mutons inside and lost two more man, my heavy from a grenade and my Russian hero due to overconfidence ("Just one guy left, I just need one hit to kill him and I'm in full cover and can take another hit. Nothing can go wrong" Miss, hit + crit,:( ) Completed the missions with 2/6 alive.

SHIVs are also immune against PSI attacks, provide cover and use suppression fire (after an upgrade). They are also good for Terror missions since they can't be turned into zombies and have good movement range. It makes them ideal for saving civilians.

If a SHIV dies you just build a new one. Soldiers die = Progress lost.

Also, Hover SHIVs are badass.

SHIVs are also immune against PSI attacks, provide cover and can provide suppression (after an upgrade).

Thank you both. Yeah I can imagine psi immunity being quite useful.

Is there any way you can get a guy out of psi manipulation once they've been taken over? Do you have to kill them? Can you stun them with an arc thrower?

Is it possible to mess your game up in the first few hours? I have three countries with nearly full panic and I can't launch any satellites. I'm just before the attack on the alien base and in the middle of my first terror mission. If I have to restart I'd like to know!

Valkyria's game design and balance is largely based on picking the closest Scout and mowing down everything in your path while the rest of your dudes wait at the start.

Game has such nice mechanics and is just fun but the tuning is so incomprehensibly bad, everytime I remember it it slightly depresses me. I wonder if it's any better in 3, because it wasn't in 2.

I haven't even built a SHIV yet in my game but I really like the idea of using them for Terror missions. I wouldn't care if the SHIV bought it, could rush them around and save some of those civs that I usually lose.

Impossible is pretty dumb. The early missions involve fighting against 20 sectoids who can all 1 hit KO your units and any time someone takes damage, half your squad panics. When my attacks actually hit, they only take off half of a sectoid's health. I've managed to get through 3 missions with a badly savaged squad, but it's just not any fun so far. I aborted one mission when it was clear I was done, and three countries were already at full panic.

SHIVs are boss. Durable, relatively expendable, powerful when upgraded (and can suppress), and they have a long movement range so they make excellent scouts.

Use disabling shot and suppression (safely) on your mind-controlled units if you can't get to the sec comm. Disabling shot in particular can be quite handy there.

They also provide some cover if there is no other nearby

Yep, though you have to be careful about grenades.

In this game kill the source.
in the first game you could stun them with a stun rod or stun launcher. Also you could make the guy drop all his/her weapons once they got back from control. Always a good idea if you could not find the source.

All of the time, it's a very annoying bug. They usually wait to spawn right on top of me when I'm fighting a group of other tough assholes.

Excellent question; anyone know the answer?

i know the disabling shot of the sniper works against your own guy if he is mind controlled.

I imagine even if the arc thrower works he would have to be low on health to get a decent hit percentage.

edit: and obviously killing the scource gives you control back.

weird, I just built 2 Alloy SHIVs but the game refuses to let me add them to my squad during squad selection

edit: went to view them in the barracks and after selecting them nothing showed up, looks like the game glitched

had to dismantle them both and swallow the loss :(

Apparently theres a bunch of SHIV related glitches.

Line of Sight is so bug ridden. I had 4 guys with a shot on a thin man, my support takes the first shot and wrecks his cover, now all of a sudden no one has LOS on him? I also often get the Sqaud sight available icon on a sniper, but it still won't let me take the shot.

wut?

Is there a deadline/time limit on the game?

I'm in mid November 2015 iirc. The last mission is good to go, but I want to do a few more things with this squad (trying SHIVs in combat and
mind controlling some dudes
)

the panic meter works as time limit. As long as you can keep panic low you have unlimited time.

Yes. First mission on impossible I'm already down to 2 soldiers and 5, 5! sectoids spawn right next to them.

If it was just one heavy floater it could have been launch, or it could have been then dropping down from on top of something. When they pop in as a group though it is a messed up spawn.

Fuck, I need to get this game. Anyone running it on Bootcamp on a Mac? I have a circa 2010 iMac (27") and wondering if I should just install Windows on a partition or go another route.

So, three classic ironman failures later, and I'm rocking in normal ironman. it still presents a pretty good challenge, both in the strategic and tactical layers. On normal, I still failed the first terror mission and on the second terror mission lost my top assault guy.

Those crysalids are complete bastards, I love how they turn all of the cover tactics on their head. Cover doesn't matter, it's about keeping distance and taking full advantage of your support abilities. Lasers help too.

Should work fine in bootcamp as long as you have some kind of dedicated GPU, geforce 400 series or above or similar. It's a UE3 game, and fairly light on the system resources by today's standards. I've got an old ass Core 2 Quad Q6600 4gb RAM and a GTX 560 ti and I run with full detail at 60+fps.

Just did a terror mission where 4 Armoured Floaters, 3 Mutons and a Beserker decided to populate the alley i was moving down.

All i'm going to say is thank god for shredder rockets, double tap and a single smoke grenade.
