XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

Am I wasting my time trying to stun an alien when my alien containment is still constructing? Or does the alien containment only unlock the interrogation option?

So I'm still early on; absolutely love the game, but my first irk is the flying/hovering enemies. I mean, I get that the game is supposed to be hardcore difficult, but the flying guys' abilities to just move almost anywhere and outflank everyone is kind of absurd.

I wrote this yesterday.

Today, Socks was one of two soldiers to survive a completely fucked landed UFO raid. It was a complete UI mistake on my part -- I was setting up my squad to breach the door when I accidentally clicked on the wrong position, which meant one of my Assaults went barging through the fucking door to take "cover" on the wrong side of the wall right in plain sight of two Sectopods and four drones. I probably should have just let her take the hits and pulled her back, but I decided to go all-in.

Socks survived, despite only being armed with a scatter laser and titan armor, while I lost three (THREE!) Colonels with plasma weapons, including my prized psionic sniper and my best support. I'm playing Normal Ironman, which means I had to live with it. I was freaking out while my men were all cut down, but somehow Socks managed to pull shit together. I was left with Socks, Rivera (a Colonel Assault), and my backup Sniper, as they systematically took down six Muton Elites. (The highlight of this middle section was when a Muton Elite turned around a corner to try to flank me and both of my Assaults unloaded on him in Overwatch, killing him in one turn.)

Then I lost my Colonel Assault while trying to take down another Sectopod and two Muton Elites, leaving only Socks and my Sniper. These two (down to about four health each at this point) managed to hold it down and take out those enemies, another Muton Elite, and an Ethereal. At the final standoff, the Ethereal mind-controlled my sniper, which meant it was all down to Socks to Run-and-Gun in and take out the Ethereal by himself, standing fully exposed in front of him.

XCom's ranks suffered a serious blow today, but Socks lives on.

Stories like this bring back the OG X-COM memories :) So good this game delivers.

  • Start a new game after you've finished the tutorial
  • Don't take all your vets along on a mission. Select some rookies, so you can create a big pool of seasoned soldiers
  • Focus on satellites in the strategic part of the game

Thanks for the tips!

My officers and NCOs are doing just fine. My rookies are dying at an alarming rate, as are assaultmen. In my unit, if you survive a couple of campaigns, you'll be around for a while.

If you survive.

OK, got laser weapons very early this time, only Nigeria is almost losing their shit, panic levels look good otherwise, survived the first terror mission with only one death... This is looking good so far.

Watch it all blow up in my face next session.

Are you guys trying to diversify your troops' abilities, or do you go for the same template for each class?

Same template.

Assault - Tactical Sense, Lightning Reflexes, Rapid fire, Close Combat Specialist, Resilience
Heavy - Bullet Swarm, Shredder Rocket, HEAT ammo, Danger Zone, Rocketeer
Support - Sprinter, Field Medic, Revive, Dense Smoke, Savior
Sniper - Squadsight, Damn Good Ground, Disabling Shot, Opportunist, Double Tap

Ok, bought the game and played for a bit.

Just got to the part
where you capture an Outsider.

I'm really enjoying the game.

Im playing on Normal cause this is my first XCOM game, but boy even thrn its kinda though

Gotta be very careful with choices.

I seem to have no money and I need to build more sattelites. Anyone know of a quick way to make a few thousand? :p

Gahd, this game pisses me off sometimes. Hitting another hard spot. Some of these guys shots are such bullshit, and relative height apparently has no affect on combat. You shouldn't be able to kill my motherfucking captain with a plasma rifle from 3 stories below.

Visit the grey market, sell off things that say "You have no other use for this other than to sell it, and things in excess (like weapon parts).

You know, sometimes I think it would be a legit strategy to put 2 rookies on the team and rename them "human shield", just for the sole purpose of distracting fire from mobs so my high level guys can plow through without the risk of a 2/3 critical combo death.

It could work if you are desperate, but a unit with even a few ranks is going to be much more useful than a meatshield/decoy.

Just had a mission go to hell on Normal Ironman. After beating it on Classic, I was pretty easily working my way through Normal without any trouble. Went up into my first UFO landing with a pretty strong team: a psychic heavy, two snipers with squadsight, two full support medics, and a decent assault soldier.

Everything was going great....right up until I opened a door and two Mutons and a Berserker were on the other side. If that wasn't enough, three Chyrsalids charged in from around the corner, completely unexpectedly. Due to 5-6 misses from my soldiers, all at 85%+ chance to hit, including a 90% stun attempt on the Berserker, my psi heavy ended up getting killed and my entire team was knocked down to less than half health in the ensuing battle. Two soldiers went down and had to be stabilized/revived, all the while panicking due to the Berserker who just wouldn't go down.

It was a tough battle and reminded me you can never get too cocky in this game, regardless of the difficulty.

Beat it, classic ironman. After a certain point the game became a cakewalk. I had 2 soldiers that made it from start to finish, a sniper and an assault. The last 15-20 missions was my team steamrolling everything, it was sad.

Looking much healthier now

Got 5 Titan Armours, 10 or so experienced soldiers with weapons to boot, satelites over every country with a couple in reserve each continent has at least 1 Interceptor, and I have some disposable income

Finishing a mission with a pistol shot is so damn satisfying

Played and won my first multiplayer 2 seconds ago!!!

10000 point game.
I had 2 basic assaults and one basic sniper with a laser rifle

the guy had one Rookie and one Uber decked out Assault with like titan armor and plasma weaps.

Game started slow... went into the bar and happened to spot the rookie in the corner. One double shot from my assault and he was down

The next turn the Col jumped down from the roof and stormed the bar.
My overwatch missed because of lightning reflexes. I threw a grenade with my assault that went wide.... moved my other assault in alittle closer along with my sniper outside.

Next turn he ran in the back room. So i threw a grenade that cleared out the walls and took off 3 hp. Took a head shot with my sniper for 10 points of dmg

Then ran in with my assault... dodged an overwatch with lightning reflexes and Copped the Win with a point blank double shot!!

I'm on a high right now...

Multiplayer is so good. It is heightened for me as well since I play a lot of local multiplayer. I will line up a high percentage shot, run over to my boy as I pull the trigger and look at his expression as his unit falls.

Just had someone promoted to Colonel in 8 missions! 29 kills in that span. I first noticed this guy when he was at 24 over 6 missions.

edit: and my toughest enemy is still the cyberdisk, so the number of enemies per map is relatively low.

Too complicated for me.

Conclusions

The tactical portion of the game does what is expected, correctly. The method the game uses for seed generation is fine. The underlying PRNG is not great and could be replaced, but the deficiencies in the algorithm should have minimal impact on game play. When you miss 3 90% shots in a row, you just got unlucky, the game is not cheating you out of your kills.

Probability is probability.

Yep, I bailed out after seeing assembly upon skimming the text. I can follow the code, but have no opinion of how efficient or effective it is vs other stuff out there. When someone tells me to generate a random value, I go for whatever the library has available.

I'll say this, people have a tendency to equate a high percentage shot with a hit. I fall into this trap as well, if I miss 3 shots in the 70s, in a row, I start to wonder. Also, the game does not "re-roll". I discovered this very early on, when I had every intention of stunning a guy and the percentage was 49. After reloading 3 times, to no avail, I decided to test it out. I got up to 7 or 8 before I simply got bored. Anecdotal evidence, but this seems to be the case.

I was just listening to the Giantbomb bombcast and Brad did the same thing with no difference in outcome. Turns out they seed the random generator at the start of the round, probably to keep people from re-rolling certain encounters.

Playing with a controller is so much faster than M/K on PC, especially if you like to overwatch a lot.

Y, RB, Y, RB, Y, RB, Y, RB, Y, RB, Y, RB in quick succession, and your whole team is on overwatch in less than a second.
