XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

I've had plenty of times (though mainly on escorts) were central will radio with, "You've got a wave of Xrays headed your way!" Which then usually leads to several enemy units just dropping into the map. Sometimes it's on top of my squad, sometimes it's in the terrifying darkness.

Yea, that's something different, and it's a pain in the ass if you aren't prepared. IT's a specific mission setting.

But on normal the enemies are sitting in one place, diddling themselves till you show up, but on classic and above, the enemies are mostly moving around the map. Sometimes they will literally stumble onto your fight, then they get a free move to get into cover. It's not too common, but I've seen it happen a few times, especially on UFO knockdown missions.

Oh man...Got my sniper up to Colonel. The Doubletap skill is the best thing ever.

Yeah it's awesome with Disabling Shot too.

I also went Squad Sight - Damn Good Ground - Opportunist with my sniper and the dude is hilariously beastly with his elevated cross-map reaction shots.

So I'm playing on normal iron man, I just made it past may, everything is looking good... and I'm thinking about starting over on classic because this is not challenging enough. But, I'm conflicted, it must get harder as the game goes on... so should I just keep going waiting for the shit to hit the fan?

I would like to beat it once, or at least get far enough, so that I know, kind of in my head, what plan is gonna be for the harder difficulties...I feel like it would really suck to be playing classic ironman right of the gate and then loose without even knowing what you should have done differently.

Also, I've played tons of SRPGs, just never played an OG X-Com

Play Classic non ironman, and just avoid saving constantly through every mission. That way you can still back up if you feel like it (or get fucked by a bug).

Save ironman for after you've beaten it at least once and have some vague idea of what you're doing.

I like it when r objective changed and aliens just drop from the sky to ur squad all on overwatch. LOL

massacre

I was in alien ship, squad on overwatch, one guy opened the force field doors, motherfucker materialized, other guy on OW killed him instantly and Madame Scientist was grinding my back for killing him.

I was pissed. I would wish to have ability to cancel OW in this case.

YURP! When he's not missing anyway. Most matches, if elevated cover isn't available or it's an interior map, i'll have him drop into overwatch immediately and watch him take out at least one of a startled enemy squad.

Again...when they don't miss...

There's no way I could do it without reloading... the goal is "getting it right", but the challenge is getting it right on the first try. If I could reload I would just keep reloading until I got the best possible outcome. Minor perfectionist OCD that can only be overcome with an abundant dose of laziness.

Coworker just asked me what happens if you capture two aliens in one mission and I honestly don't know. I'm assuming you can hold as many as you can catch and the chamber just shows the last one you tazed.

I would hope they make alien sex in the chamber.

You get both to interrogate. You don't need to buy another chamber, yeah.

Ah. Thought they were talking about the sudden drops. Wandering enemies is pretty par as far as I can tell. Got to anticipate getting hit from all directions if you're lining up and clearing out, standard sweep.

Love this fucking game.

'scuseme - any graphics tweaks yet?

It's UE3 so just go to documents/my games/xcom/xcomgame/config and XComEngine.ini + lightmass.

Look at Borderlands 2 gfx tweaks or tweak by yourself.
Disabling video there and turning[true-ing] or upping up many things.

For those that are on laptops and want the game smoother, set DynamicShadows=True to DynamicShadows=False.

My concerns about it not being difficult enough were not well founded. :-D

Three complete wipes tonight!

I think once I'd lost the first squad and was forced to deploy an entire group of rookies it just compounded itself.

I'm loving it! :)

I wonder what the full squad of rookies sitting in the blood-soaked skyranger were thinking. Probably placing bets on who was going to panic and shoot up a squadmate first.
six way tie?

All you rookies are barely on 2 wipes? HA. I've already got my ass wiped and practically hydrocolon-cleansed a good 6 times already. Feels good man.

Damn... this game aint easy. 4 hours in and it everything just started going downhill. Ended up with 1 soldier and 1 robot to do missions and eventually all the countries pulled out of the Xcom project and Game over.

XCOM.

There's no game that makes death so natural and certain like XCOM. You cherish your little soldiers, pamper them with shiny gadgets and heal their injuries when they need it, but at the same time you know they are going to die sooner than later. And with enough time, you also learn to accept it.

I imagine a lot of people get themselves in early trouble by purchasing relatively extraneous stuff and largely ignoring satellites, uplinks, and interceptors. Those are the key to keeping panic levels low as well as having a greater influx of money coming in each month.

You don't want to exaggerate with it too much and screw yourself with the maintenance costs, but you definitely want to be getting satellites up early.

At the end of a turn, instead of firing you can put a soldier on 'overwatch', which means if he sees an enemy move he has a chance of reacting and firing at it during the enemy turn.

And Overwatch is particularly powerful on a sniper w/ Squad Sight (and later Opportunist which removes the aim penalty on reaction shots and boosts their crit), as he can get a free shot on an enemy you've just spotted during their initial intercept turn.

He can also generally just hang out way behind the ruckus and punish enemy movement turns, and it's particularly nice against melee-based enemies who are just ripe for Overwatch.

just out of curiosity - playing this game side by side with a friend who pre ordered it, I noticed that I don't even have the option to add color to my soldiers' armor. Will this ever be coming out, or is it really only available to those who pre ordered? seems like a pretty basic customization option that they just lopped off...

EDIT: I noticed it was called the Elite Soldier DLC - so they may be releasing it later?

I am lttp on this game for PC. A few questions:

1. How are the 360 controls implemented? Do they replace all prompts to where they show up as buttons/triggers on the 360 controller?

2. Any issues with AA or ways to force AA or any advanced graphics settings?

Thanks!

Someon just pointed something out to me, if Classic is too big a jump from normal, you can change the difficulty at any time. You could actually start on normal, win some matches, build up a few units, then switch to classic if you want to not feel like you are getting totally obliterated.

Is it an advantage to go through the tutorial or not? You have less control at first, and the first mission will result in more casualties, but you get a free satelite, saving you about 120 xcombux

echo already said it but since I just did this last mission, I can confirm. You capture both, they both end up in the containment and you can interrogate both. It's 2 entries in the research queue.

Are any of the graphics settings obvious candidates to be turned down? As in, do any give a large performance boost without a particularly noticeable effect on how it looks?

Wow lost 6 men over two missions. The raid one just kept going and I lost 2 guys to a nade, then another died from cross fire :(
My Sniper pretty much saves everyones ass. The second mission I lost 3 guys I nearly lost the whole squad!!

3 guys one half dead end up between 2 psi's, 3 muton and a zerk. Through some magic twist off luck I overcame them but now my team is battered and loaded with rookies.

So many good men GONE! :(:(

Right. The rigid percentages work into this. You can't play this game like Advance Wars or your usual SRPG since accounting for casualties is built into the base layer. A big part of the strategy is preparing for the occasional, inevitable massacre.

So...this is basically the first game that has crippled my PC. What the fuck? During the Skyranger cut scene the frame rate drops to like 2 and it can't even complete playing it.

Is this a known issue? I have a GTX 570, just built the machine last year and have not yet had to lower any settings for any game.

Also, the demo ran like butter but this just fucking chugs. What gives!?

try restarting the computer.

I have had the same issues with this and Torchlight 2 and restarting the computer fixed it. Never noticed this issue before though, maybe a recent win7 or driver update?. Have win 7 on ssd.

I am really wanting to pick this up and I see that Green Man Gaming has it for $49.

Money is super tight right now for personal reasons I won't go into. Anyone know of any coupons or anything?

What horrible timing...I have been waiting for a follow up to my beloved XCOM for so long.

So guys, from all this tutorial talk and how it's actually kinda restricting in forcing some early decisions, should I even start with the tutorial? What does it teach me or will I figure everything out by myself?

If you've never played xcom before you should definetly play the tutorial, just restart the game after you are done.

I did play Xcom before so I'm aware of the basics, I just kinda don't want to play hours of tutorial (it's quite long, isn't it?) only to restart again. And what is that about one tutorial mission killing nearly all your squad?

One thing I haven't found out yet, do you get a free sat. on classic ironman for doing the tutorial, or do you eventually get it without the tutorial? In my game I built one straight away, and I haven't gotten a free one.
