XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

Just suffered my first complete party loss in Ironman Classic and it was within the first 6 missions I went on. And the #1 killer of my party? A random rookie at the back of my lines who panicked and fired into the group in front of him two turns in a row. Remind me next time just to put a hole in the rookie's head before I let him off the Skyranger.

I just launched Steam and now it's downloading a 1.8GB update for XCOM. Is this the biggest patch in gaming history which isn't an MMO expansion?

edit: Ahahaha, those patch notes. 1080p movies are now used instead of 720p. SHIVs are fixed. And most importantly, hardware mouse cursor is implemented! How using software mouse cursor somehow got into release code is something which is unfathomable to me. Even FFXIV had enough sense to get hardware mouse cursor in for that game's abortion of a launch.
I'm clueless as to the difference between hardware and software mouse cursor.

Random maps in expansion or DLC pls. PLS.

I'm clueless as to the difference between hardware and software mouse cursor.

In XCOM's case, their software implementation meant that the mouse would update at 30 frames per second max. Very few modern games behave that way and it was very distracting. It's fixed now.

I felt like something was way off on the demo with the mouse. Huh.

SHIV's are excellent for terror missions, let them dash thru the map ignoring the enemies and rescue the civilians, and have your squad hang back and gangrape the chrysilids it spots. SHIV's cant be zombified.

Also Chrysilids can't climb buildings or cars/shipping crates etc. Have your dudes with grappling hooks pick them off from above.

If things are going bad just dash back to the blue rectangle near the skyranger.

Chryssalids don't climb, they jump up to buildings.

Now that I'm starting a new game, after the first was a debacle.. a couple of quick questions:

1. What research unlocked the satellite nexus? I have it available, but I don't remember what did it.

2. The engineer workshop/foundry(the one that's suppose to upgrade stuff, not the just spit out more engineers). How valuable is it?

I expect additional random map DLC

actual spoiler redacted

At the very end of the final mission
I was absolutely certain that my psionic-dude was taking control of the ship to make it take my squad to Mars, where the real final mission would take place.

Then it exploded and I was like "Welp."

The game finishes patching and now I got:

"This game was activated with a product code that is valid only in a specific geographic region. Since you are not currently in that region, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is not available to play."

What's up with that?

Apparently the new update introduced region lock to XCOM. You might be fucked if you got it as a Steam Gift.

I'm certain my XCOM key was european in origin (bought it from GMG) but I'm not locked out (I'm in Malaysia by the way).

Sounds like you bought a grey market key and Valve caught you.

I wonder how they are going to handle DLC for this. This isn't the sort of game where you can just add mission packs or new classes/civs. I wonder if they'll go all out for cosmetic DLC for your soldiers. Maybe a character creator DLC that let's you set the sex and nationality!

MP Maps and perhaps some additional game modes for MP. With only 5 maps for MP it could get stale very easily, but I have a feeling that the majority of the DLC will be more MP Maps (at least I hope).

Keep missing 97% chance hits. Allright this is getting ridiculous.

When in doubt use a shotgun/grenade!

Is there any penalty for not prioritizing the items/rooms the game wants you to? I'm passed my 2nd month, and I'm only now researching the stun gun thingy.

Wait, what? The game doesn't let you see the level of cover you're moving into on PC after the patch anymore?
Why would they remove that.

Also: This game is completely unfair.

Should I keep my ufo components or is that how you actually make money just like in the original?

Damaged UFO components have no purpose other than to be sold. The ones you recover intact you probably want to keep. There's quite a bit of stuff you'll want to manufacture that uses them.

Absolutely loving the game, although I will have to stop treating it like Fire Emblem and let my soldiers die for incompetency instead of getting frustrated and starting over.

This game is doing bad things to my life.

I think they should make it clearer that Engineering efforts can sometimes run concurrently. I assumed it was like Research, one at a time.

Only lost India and Japan before taking out the
alien base.

Think of it as a role-playing game. I just bailed on a Target Escort mission after Thin Men wiped out everyone but one guy.

I think it's BS that some projects get produced instantly and some others take time.

I spent like 30 minutes creating them and the entire squad got squashed in the first mission lol.

If anyone wants to see how it happened it's recorded here:

@31mins

Two missed sniper shots basically ruined everything.

With reference to the picture above, is this what the DLC enables you to do? Or are there even more customisations available?

I just cant work out if I have the pre-order DLC activated. I can make soldiers like this. (ie coloured armour, varieties of hair, etc) So am I right to assume I have the DLC? Thanks.

Just got to my first Muton mission on classic and have no clue how to beat them. They freaking never ever miss, and can take soo much damage. It takes like 3 hits to kill one, and with how hard it is to get high percentage shots in this game, you are going to spend a lot of turns taking a group of 3 out. It doesn't help that I don't have my A team and my only sniper is out sick too.

This is probably a sign that I need to learn to use more of my abilities, particularly explosives and smoke.

I've also been doing less overwatching, since it seems like overwatchers always freaking miss and Mutons shoot like 100% so you can't waste turns sitting around with anyone. I guess it just seemed like my strategy of putting one or two guys behind full shield cover and just overwatch to keep those aliens in place as my other guys work to flank didn't seem to work anymore, and it didn't seem like it had any higher percentage then just shooting at the bastards. And now that strategy makes even less sense since full shield cover apparently means nothing.

Probably going to treat it similar to how I treat my Pokemon team: always keep a steady team of newcomers and veterans on my active roster to keep things balanced. Still crushing to have a veteran die early in a battle after enemies spawn near him/her w/o any advanced notice.

I will be addicted to this for a long time, no doubt.

And a god damned Mars mission

srsly

(end of game spoilers)
I was a little disappointed that I didn't go to Cydonia. Plus, it's kinda strange that that huge UFO at the end just sits there and wont' do anything unless I actively start the final mission. It just seems odd to fly around the world doing sorties while that huge purple ship just chills out, when just in the last cut scene everyone is losing their shit over its appearance.

Another complaint - shit material requirements. I have both Carapace armor and Laser weapons researched but can't produce anything, as they all require alloys. Where do you get it? From a downed UFO. How am I supposed to do it when all I get are abduction missions or council requests? I'm almost at the end of May, in June the Mutons will show up.

Loving what they did with this game.

Want more depth though.

I want a soldier's nationality to play a small role in how they perform when on a mission in their country.

I want accents or even that soldier speaking in their native tongue with sub titles on the screen.

More animations.

Better collision detection. I'm overwatch-killing way too many aliens THROUGH walls.

I had a truly nasty Terror mission. I had just landed and I just moved one guy far enough to rescue 2 civilians when all hell broke loose! Upon moving another guy suddenly 3 heavy floaters appeared followed by 4 mutons and 2 berserkers. That meant I could see 9 enemies at once and I still had 4 guys yet to move! A few rockets helped and my snipers took a few, but I took some injuries (I had plasma weapons luckily) but no KIA's. And in 2 more turns the aliens were all dead. This was on Normal.
But being ambushed like that! And they killed the two civilians I had rescued because the aliens were so close to the Skyranger the embarkation rectangle was visible to them and the civilians were standing there! I think it was the Police Station map. That was not nice, yet I was genuinely chuffed when I completed it with all my guys alive.

My full squad as of now. Have a Lt who is injured (the Argentinian dude from the tutorial mission). So far, I've lost Argentina and South Africa. :( My Argentinian dude must be pissed at me as well as Joseph.

1. Alien nav computer.
2. Ok the foundry is SUPER useful.
You upgrade medikits to heal more. Upgrade ammo conservation to get more shots without reloading, this is VERY important later in the gamer. I used to always run out of ammo while I was still surrounded by a couple of nasty aliens. Those two alone are totally worth it. You can also upgrade your scopes to cause more crit chance etc.

This is also the reason why I think Asia is the best starting location on Classic difficulty and above, when choices like that matter. Africa will give you +30%, which maybe equals to extra 100 each month. You save much more than that when you get to buying upgrades in Officer School and projects in the Foundry.

Also, how is Workshop/Laboratory/Foundry/Officer School unlocked. I noticed they appear for me at different time intervals.

So with this game, and even the limited time I have to play it, because of school, I feel like I wasted 35 bucks since I haven't even touched Dishonored yet. lol

Not sure about Officer school, I think it has to do with the rank of your soldiers. Also not sure about workshop. But foundry is unlocked by "experimental warfare" research which you get to research when you collect alien items, I think.

Thanks. It seems I focused way too much on research and items on the first go.

Workshop and laboratory unlock after you pick up your first set of new engineers/scientists.

If trying to get the most continent bonuses (gained by having satellites over countries) the only continents to put your base is eithe Europe or Asia as they have 4 countries each and everywhere else has 2 or 3. This way you build less satellites and (potentially) gain the most bonuses.

Personally I would go with Asia for the officer school. The 5th squad member and extra xp for kills is huge early game.

The only problem I have with the Foundry (and this is with the game in general) is that when I upgrade an item like the scope or medikit when I look at the item in the loadout for my squad it does'nt say "upgrade". I have to assume it has been. There is a lack of information sometimes.

For people that are much further in the game than I: You can research body armor that actually goes into the body armor slot, yes?
