XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I've played about 10 games of Ironman Classic, and in every one of them 2 countries leave the alliance midway into the first month. Is this supposed to happen?

I have no idea how I could stop them... in that two week span I can only get 1 abduction mission in one of the four that start with 2-3 panic to reduce their panic levels, but then the neglected others go up in panic drastically because they are ignored.

Finally got to play. Loving the game. Question though: how do you know when the tutorial has ended? I just failed the escort the UN dude mission (mass panic, squad members started shooting each other, UN dude died).

I think it runs until you've build your alien containment facility.

My concern with using normal to figure out strategies is that I'm afraid I'll start thinking too much about the long game when I start on Classic. I mean, fuck regular old generators, for example.

Do you get anything if you capture an alien type that you've already captured before?

You get their guns and grenades. Nice when you see how much plasma rifles and pistols cost to make.

I kinda wish I could break these light plasma rifles into fragments because I have tons of them.

Ah, been playing for four hours straight. Game's fun.

I need to get some more satellites in the air, but I was low on Engineers, so I couldn't build another Uplink. Well I got a mission with Engineers as a reward and built a Workshop. Things are looking nice now. the Uplink will be active in a few days and I got a satelite in storagee ready to launch. Thinking Japan. They're kind of paranoid over there now.

As for the tactical part, I've suffered no losses, on Normal, but I did have one Support down for the count. But I have a ton of Supports, could really use another Heavy or Sniper soon. Just got my second Assault, and man did she earn that promotion. Rookie with an Arc Thrower. Caught my
Outsider
, didn't get promoted for that. Next mission she just missed stunning a wounded Sectoid. finally she got promoted. To Assault. I think I'm going to make her a rifle assault, just to make her different from my other one who has a terrible habit of getting wounded...

Next up is Beam Weapon research, then I hope I can shoot down another UFO. Low on alloys.

Finally got my ass handed to me.

I was doing quite great and had a squad of veterans. Then I
built the skeleton key and found the location of the alien base. Man it's rough in there!

All of my guys have carapace armour and a couple other goodies. Should I be going in there or waiting until I do / find / discover something else?

I'm just at the
first UFO landing, which was shortly after the introduction of the Cyberdisks
, my current objective is to
research the crystal
, but I've been putting it off to research weapons instead. Not that I can buy many of them at the moment...

How far into the campaign am I, anyway? Am I screwing myself over by not moving ahead with researching something labeled "PRIORITY" in big flashing letters?

A squad of 6 with carapace and laser weapons should be able to handle it fine.

Tip related to the first part, from someone who rushed to beam weapons:
If you haven't caught a Sectoid yet, you should try and do so soon. It took me forever to do that because they stopped showing up for some reason, and I smacked my forehead when I saw the bonus you get for it.

weird, i captured some more aliens and I didnt get their guns. Are they supposed to show up in the loadout immediatly or do I have to "activate" them somehow ?

Love this new version, but I only just found out about the omission of base defense. :( Hope that comes into play in an expansion or something as well as the ability to sell off player-built items.

90% stun chance on one. Missed. (That's XCOM, baby!) Had to put it down before it hurt anyone. I'll get another one.

Listen, doctor. I know your research is very important to you but shut. up. with the passive aggressive admonishments when I am in the middle of an intense firefight.

Got an A my first month and lost about 2 rookies and 1 squadie. My team leader, D'Brickashaw Moises is a straight up alien serial killer. He didn't like having to capture a sectoid but took solace in that the sectoid would be "cleansed" after we extract what we need from it. I think I just came up with his nickname. "The Cleaner".

Do you have a favorite team member?

Yeah I bet in the expansion or sequel they will put that in there. This game and this thread seem a hell of a lot more lively than the Civ 5 thread, which I take to mean that this is a pretty big hit for Firaxes.

Don't be too concerned if you lose a few countries. It's bound to happen especially on the higher difficulties. It's just not something you want to allow to get out of control.

Five countries. And I still have to upgrade my armour and weapons.

Time to restart.

I need to flip off the FPS switch and start using overwatch instead of throwing myself into the action.

i also put off priority research to develop other stuff, don't think you're screwing yourself cuz it worked out great for me. but i think you are 2/3 into the campaign.

Are there detailed stat breakdowns anywhere? I want to try and figure out base accuracies and things, so I can tweak my strategies, especially against fucking thin men and their fucking perfect aim against dudes in low cover.

Love this game but one thing is really pissing me off.

They should have made an effort to make the levels in different countries somewhat believable. Doing some mission in Central Africa and I am in an American City, same for the Australian mission I did. Geez just put me in the desert if your not even going to try.

My sniper, major Brian Boitano. Everytime he headshots an alien from across the map I start singing "What would Brian Boitano do."

Maybe a battle near a famous landmark of a country. Just one special map.

You need to research the guns first. They actually give a plausible reasoning for this, in the old game it was just 'yeah, you don't know how to pull the trigger on that gun until we spend 2 weeks figuring it out, sorry'

For the newer players, consider starting a game with the tutorial and playing up till you get free reign, and then start a new game with the tutorial disabled for full control.

Playing with tutorial enabled limits you to two continents to place your base and also forces you down certain early base upgrade paths, but it's also a good way to get a feel for certain things, so it's a good idea to play through it. Then afterwards just start a new game and disable the tutorial and you can do whatever you want.

WTF is up with this game? It can't really be this good can it? I'm playing it and I still don't believe it.

I have an odd question..would the missions go on for ever and ever if you don't complete specific objectives. I just never had a chance to capture an alien alive. I got the arc thrower but just couldn't pull it off. I must have gone another 10 mission with that as an objective. I finally got it done and it looks like the story moved ahead. SO...do I have to complete those 'story' objectives or the game won't end? Kind of irked because I feel like I'm losing grip on my countries. 1 country left and that's all but now I'm getting B ranks instead of A and I feel like it could all go south.

If you haven't played before you sure so start forming a 'should have done it this way' list.
I should have made satellites earlier. I haven't focused on weapons much but I feel like I waited too long and didn't get them ready. Now it takes 20 days to make a sat and by that time I think more people will bail.

Overwatch is incredibly beneficial. You should get used to using it just out of habit. Inch guys up relatively slowly, never dashing unless you're certain you're not running into trouble, and put guys on Overwatch almost every turn. If you do dash, make sure you've got other guys spotting you with Overwatch in case something shows up.

DefaultGameCore.ini in Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XComGame\Config has all the player and enemy unit stats in it. I'd copy and paste some of it in here, but it'd be too messy looking.

Man i start to think my run is in a dead end. The countries don´t leave me anymore because i got satelites up. (11) So i can´t loose because of that it seems.
I lost around 15 of my best soldiers pretty close to each other. Now i have to try to do the regular missions and ufos with new guys which aren´t quiet good enough.
But all the council missions are cakewalks because they are full of sectoids or thin man. (extraction and bomb disposal). So it reduces the panic level overall. Now i have no research left but can´t really finish it because i get my ass kicked in the ufos i shoot down.

Does anyone else think the bonusses for altitude are way too low? Anyone but a sniper wtih damn good ground really has no advantage for taking the high ground as far as I can see.

Trying to work out the best armour to use; Titan, Archangel or Ghost. I think Ghost is more useful in general and my Assault guy is lethal with it being able to blow away a Muton Elite in two blasts right up close and personal (with the Alloy Cannon). And white seems a nice, futuristic colour too.

I think it depends on class and how you use that unit. Sniper's should definitely use archangel armor. Ghost works great with support and their scouting ability. I'd put titan armor on heavies. Assaults can go either way, titan armor gives them larger health boosts thanks to conditioning, but as you mentioned ghost works well for close ranged combat.

Should I start rotating rookies in periodically in an effort to increase their rank/skills so I don't get boxed in if a senior member somehow makes his or her way over to my wall of remembrance?

I actuly felt they had a pretty good explanation for why the aliens wont just storm your base and kill everyone, you find out what the aliens motivations are in the last mission.

This game is so brilliant in that it makes you feel like you're on the brink of failure from the beginning, that each and every little decision has true weight and every victory is substantial. No other game does this (at least in my experience).

Now to get home from this business trip so I can continue playing the damn thing.

Whats the point of the EMP cannon? I thought it was to take down UFOs without damaging them for all the extra loot. Then I got to my first EMPed crash site the thing was blown to shit.
