Learn from my mistake, don't be afraid to go to a "very difficult" mission (not an UFO shootdown mission) in the early game, especially when the panic level of the country is high.
All you get is higher numbers of sectoids and thin men. As long as you play it slow and safe and encounter 2, max 3 at a time, it'll be no problem.

My favorite moment so far was how I got the
Outsider Shard
.

The
Outsider
was playing hard to get. That is, camping cover in the middle of the UFO. My rookie had the Arc Thrower outside the UFO and I had a Support helping her. Ran the rookie in behind the power source, because explosive cover is best cover, and the Support threw a smoke grenade at her while just outside the UFO. Ha, what are you going to do now, mr. alien? "Overwatch!"

Well played. So, my rookie couldn't actually approach. Cue the Support deliberately dashing through the UFO to draw the reaction shot. Dashing gives a bonus against reaction shots. And the alien took its shot and missed. So the rookie walked out from behind the power source, lined up the Arc Thrower and *ZAP* Objective completed. One heck of a first mission for a rookie. Of course, it wasn't worth a promotion... Um, say what?

Same mission had a funny moment, too. A stupid Thin Man had poisoned my sniper and heavy, so their accuracy was dead. Next turn, he'd kill someone, probably the sniper. My only sniper. Well that couldn't stand, now could it? "FRAG OUT!" And then the Thin Man learned not to be a wiseass and close in on "Longbow". She packs grenades.

Protip: don't take rookies to fight Chrsalids.

Really the best place to take rookies or squaddies is UFO capture missions or abduction missions. In general rookies are just terrible and if you are finding out that you need new blood when you are a couple of months in, you should seriously consider the OTS upgrades for new troops (extra XP, rookies get promoted to squaddie). Or maybe get a SHIV instead.

Speaking of SHIVs, they are gold for terror missions. I haven't had problems with terror missions in general, Chrysalids get mowed down by troops with either reasonable levels or reasonable weapons. They are relatively low HP and don't care about cover. Just use caution when advancing in a terror mission, keep a good field of fire and LOS for your squadsight sniper, and you'll be OK.

I didn't see my question answered earlier...

When you abandon a mission during the middle of one, are all of your soldiers supposed to die?

I started a mission this morning but had to leave early for work... in my haste I accidentally abandoned the mission instead of clicking save and exit. The next screen I see is my entire 5 man squad (all veterans) were KIA. Needless to say I was very upset.

Does that always happen?

Any soldier outside the blue Skyranger exit zone will be left behind. So yes, it's supposed to happen like that.

I think it's BS that the game thinks a capture is not worth a promotion. It should be the equivalent of 3 kills if not more. I had my first capture of a sectoid with a rookie with 0 kills, a German woman with short hair who looks like a guy. Was immensely pissed that she wasn't promoted after the mission.

Looks like the game is doing pretty well, at least on PC.

There are currently just over 52,000 people playing it on Steam right now, which makes it the 4th highest peaked today game (behind DOTA 2, TF2, and Counter-Strike).

Anyone know the ini settings/tweaks to disable the patented ue3 texture pop-in?

Was playing my 4th or 5th classic ironman game, going quite well into the third month, then it all went downhill when my squad got obilerated in a bomb diffusion mission by three thin men who jumped out of the sky after I diffused the bomb and surrounded my squad. Not only was my squad surrounded in all directions with nowhere to run, the thin men landed on high ground too...

That

Is

So

Bullshit.

It seems like you just need to ignore difficult and above missions when your best guys aren't around. It's also difficult replenish the experienced guys in your squad before the current ones get killed.

It actually just surpassed CS, and is doing way better than dishonored (in terms of concurrency of course) which came out the same day. I'm glad it's doing well, I love this game.

Well, you kinda have to account for that. Maps I have learned aren't really that random, and mission structure will always dictate the way you have to move around. Missions like VIP escorts for example, will always have enemies dropping behind you, so if you position your people through the map properly they should be ready for that to happen.

I think I already know the answer to this question, but "is this game worth buying?" I have limited resources, but I really like the look of this and just want so affirmation that this is a solid game with 15-20+ hours of enjoyment.

Account for spawns when you're on a narrow bridge, fighting against the timer to diffuse the bomb, trying to plow through the existing enemies as fast as you can, then somehow positioning your squad to counter surround the thin men that don't exist yet while a single guy from your squad goes to extinguish the bomb?

Sure you can learn through it eventually through experience, but it's still bullshit.

I was having a great start to a Classic Ironman game. Then had my first Terror Mission in Mexico City.

Those damn insects wiped out my whole squad. Game over man. Game over!

Can we loot corpses like in the originals? I wanted to run back to a fallen soldier to grab a health kit, but couldnt.

More hours than that, really. The game is designed for multiple playthroughs via map randomization, and what you decide to put resources into. It's a bit like a streamlined Civ in terms of replayability.

I've done that mission in that map (not ironman) and it was tough, but it isn't about counter-surrounding enemies that don't exist, more like have half of your team behind in overwatch at all times and at least cover from the sides so when your more advanced group uncovers new enemies they are ready to retaliate and they can cover each other when one gets flanked. I guess my team comp helped me: 2 snipers way behind with squad vision, 2 assaults moving and diffusing bombs on each side and 1 heavy/1 support as backup.

I did have it later in the game tho, and every thin man was a 1 shot kill so maybe I got lucky.

I don't think so... In the xcom world, understanding of aerosol band-aids only is possible after a promotion, and even then only a few randomly selected individuals are allowed any first aid knowledge.

Wow.

So India, in all their wisdom, decided that because they don't have satalite coverage (which they do BTW), they wanted to retool their entire military with alien weaponry. So they come to me, asking for 9 light plasma rifles in exchange for 2,548cr. I sold all my corpses for the 500cr I needed to make what I didn't have, sold them off and used the profits to buy a f'ton of upgrades. For a little while, I felt like I wasn't strapped for cash.

More like 150-200. Probably my favorite game in years, so good.

So I shot down this giant ship with an EMP. According to the hyper wave decoder it contains Etheral. I remember from the original game that they are dangerous PSI foes and I only have one PSI gifted soldier. Should I take the risk of raiding it or just let it go?

You must have encountered an Etheral before to have a hyper wave decoder don't you? Anyways, killing/capturing them is way easier with SHIVs so maybe try it if you have one.

Can you make SHIV's? They are immune to psi attacks.

It's not like the original Xcom where psi enemies did not need LOS to do psi attacks. They can mind control your troops, but the mind control will end when the ethereal dies. So just make sure to kill it in a turn or two and it won't be a problem. Of course, that can be tricky if you lack firepower, since they have a lot of HP and can put up a reflective shield.

You need to kill ethereals to make Mind Shields for psi defense, though. Gotta break in those boots before they'll fit.

Damn, I really need to progress the story, I haven't captured an alien yet or built the uhh, containment? thing for them either.

I think 4 of my main 6 are up to the second or third last rank. Captain?

I have played for about 25 hours now. I love this game even more than when I started. This is easily one of my favorite games in years.

Honestly, I hope a lot of casual and console gamers give this a shot but I'm afraid terms like "turn based" and "strategy game" may scare them off. I think the presentation and the way it eases you in to things means that it has a chance to really break through to a non-strategy gamer crowd if people would give it a chance.

Frankly, I'm not that big on strategy game myself. I played a good deal of Civ V and even though I enjoyed it, I never got to the point where I really understood the long game of what tech trees I was following and why.

I feel this game is incredibly accessible, though. Beautifully cinematic. And not only that it's freaking edge of your seat tense and exciting. It deserves to be a mainstream hit as it is deep but yet completely approachable.

People who never have played or liked strategy games should definitely give this a shot.

I've got one squad member that has been there from the beginning (well, besides the tutorial). She is the highest ranking member, sniper, has the kills and most Ops under her belt, and is my fearless team leader. If she dies I'm going to be seriously distraught, I have bonded with this character.

Science lady can get fucked in the no-no. I've discovered that grenades are immensely helpful when fighting sectoids and tin men. No way I'm sacrificing more brave men just so she can get her nethers twixted.

Agreed. Not to mention blowing shit up with a rocket launcher is hilarious.

Agreed. Instead of credits they should have put Million. It bothers me also... in fact I want a mod that changes it to millions, is that weird lol??

I know they did it for simplicity's sake, but the low funding numbers bug me.

That and not being able to pick-up stuff from fallen soldiers are my biggest gripes. Still, the rest of the game is so good I can excuse those little things.

Fake edit: How the heck are you supposed to reanimate a fallen member? I use a medkit to stabilise him, but after that I'm SOL.

People's impressions are bringing me back to the good ole days. The original game was shock full of those moments when your motley crew did something amazing and you realized that you would never ever live with a single one of their deaths. Its on my wish list now.
