Does anyone else think the bonusses for altitude are way too low? Anyone but a sniper wtih damn good ground really has no advantage for taking the high ground as far as I can see.

I notice I get around a 10-15 bump with normal Joes vs snipers.

Also, a nice little capture combo is fire supression from your heavy with an arc blaster from your support member.

Welp after almost 10 hours straight I can safely say that it has managed to capture some of the magic of the original, in a way I hadn't dared to hope for.

There are some desing decisions I don't like, such as removing facing, letting Aliens get an extra move when you first see them, some of the simplified base management stuff etc. And there are a few minor bugs and wonkyness at times with the camera and UI with a mouse and keyboard. But overall the game is just amazing, it's been years since a game has captured an held my interest like this, JUST ONE MORE MISSION!

Is each alien grenade its own thing? Say I equip an alien grenade on a dude; he uses it in battle; for the next mission will he still have it or is it gone?

MY question got eaten by the page end so I was wondering if anyone knew the answer.

"I have an odd question..would the missions go on for ever and ever if you don't complete specific objectives. I just never had a chance to capture an alien alive. I got the arc thrower but just couldn't pull it off. I must have gone another 10 mission with that as an objective. I finally got it done and it looks like the story moved ahead. SO...do I have to complete those 'story' objectives or the game won't end? "

It works the same way as normal grenades, you get one per mission and they get refilled after battle.

The game will continue forever until you complete story missions.

Until you research it at The Foundry. Then it basically replaces Frag Grenade.

Yeah, like the original, there are certain things you must do to reach the final mission. This game is just nice enough to put a big fat **PRIORITY** next to it.

i had the greatest xcom moment ever early in the game on the first day i played. my entire squad had died save one rook, and i was convinced i was fucked, with no hope whatsoever of completing the mission. but by destiny and luck i managed to get a 2 for 1 by killing a mind merging sectoid at the end on my last shot with extremely low percentage to hit, and i won. thats XCOM baby.

i think it was a curse in disguise though cuz i swear, for every single mission afterwards that same character would get wounded.

That rook would go on to become Batman >_>

which reminds me, i thought you could customize flags in this game? :(

Whats the point of the EMP cannon? I thought it was to take down UFOs without damaging them for all the extra loot. Then I got to my first EMPed crash site the thing was blown to shit.

This is another reason why procedural map generation would be a good thing. Firaxis wouldn't have to create entirely new maps for each stage of a UFO's destruction.

I also miss how you used to be able to choose exactly when to attack a downed ship, and how the UFO's condition would change depending on this. Oh oh and I miss trying to stick to daytime ops and being terrified if I was forced to land at night.

Thank you, that's a good thing to know. That's an interesting way to handle it. I'm supposed to catch another alien now but that kind hasn't showed up in the last3-4 missions, I only saw them earlier. Since I wasted so much time on that one objective, I wonder if I'm going to have problems later. I should be further in the story and the missions are getting much harder. It might be overwhelming by the time I catch up.

Should I start rotating rookies in periodically in an effort to increase their rank/skills so I don't get boxed in if a senior member somehow makes his or her way over to my wall of remembrance?

doing that for "easy" missions seems like a good strat.

I already regret getting the game for the PC because of Steam. I installed it for the demo and it worked fine, but now I can't seem to install the game correctly. What happened to PC gaming? Why can't I simply install the game from the disc without Steam interfering?

Steam is a fucking piece of shit.

I just want to play XCOM...

I think the hype is starting to wear off...it's great game, but I have a couple of complaints

a) The whole 80 maps but "locations will change". From my experience, this isn't the case at all. Have played several maps repeatedly, with alien spawn locations exactly the same on each playthrough. Only seems to change the location when a map is used for a special mission ie bomb disposal or escort.

b) Alien patrols teleporting into places. How could that have been a good idea?

I'm sure more will come to me as I play more of the game. I'd say I'm up over 30 hours already, and I'm still enjoying it...just wishing that perhaps it could have been more ambitious.

How about some more details so we can actually help you fix your issue? I don't think anyone else had an issue with Steam and XCOM.

I installed from the retail release and it worked nicely so I'm not sure what he's talking about!

Status Report: Ironman Classic

During issuance of previous report, Strike Team had been cleared for rapid deployment to engage UFO on the ground in midwestern United States. The immediate redeployment to combat area after our intense Australia Op resulted in Strike Team deploying slightly undermanned as multiple operators required immediate medical attention.

Early this morning, HQ received a transmission from Strike Team leader Lt "Raven" Soto. Alien craft secure, all xenos neutralized. Request the Chaplain be present at Skyranger docking.

Preliminary reports by Lt Soto indicate as XCOM operators approached the craft, they immediately came under fire from "Floater" units approaching from the western side of the UFO. Strike Team exchanged fire, unable to inflict casualties and found themselves pinned down. Lt Soto provided covering sniper fire from her elevated position while Strike Team members made an attempt to swing around floaters and get a better angle of fire. The gunfire alerted a patrol of Mutons from the opposite direction and strike team members in the valley became unfavorable pincered between the two hostile groups. Rookie Adams was outflanked and took a direct 3 round volley into his torso, punching through his Carapace armor and killing him instantly. Xeno tactics were successful as hostile units provided overwatch keeping Strike Team pinned down, while other hostile units moved into better position. From her elevated position Lt Soto quickly noticed many of the floaters had grouped together behind cover and ordered Sgt Owato to deploy his HE rocket launcher. The blast killed 2 ETs instantly and oblitered the cover the 3rd was using. A well placed sniper shot from the LT and the last was down. The mutons took opportunity to open fire but failed to hit and Lt Soto ordered Strike Team to fall back full speed to create distance and get ot higher ground. The gambit worked as XCOM operators were able to get into solid position and catch the Mutons in the open as they pursued. Brief gunfire exchanged resulted in light wounds sustained by XCOM operators but no further KIAs, while all xenos were neutralized.

The craft itself was lightly garrisoned by thin men and a strange energy creature. Breach of the craft under the cover of smoke led to an intense hallway battle in which all hostiles were taken down. Our research team would have liked to have captured the energy creature alive, but in the haste to redploy Strike Team had failed to bring Arc Projector technology.

A large amount of desperately needed alien alloy was recovered which should allow HQ to continue production of advanced weapon tech and ensure strike team is properly equipped. Unfortunately funding is low again and the council of nations does not reconvene for 20 days. Until then we sit tight, lick our wounds, and refill our ranks. Command Staff has issued three standing priorites for this month. Secure more funding through successful Ops & independent sale transactions, use funding to provide increased satellite coverage, and capture an energy creature which command believes to be of some rank. Command agrees its time we take the fight to them, and the recent success of the project had led to some momentum. The best defense is always a great offense.

Three countries left the project and now I have to choose from three abduction missinons - one is totaly nonpanicky and would give me 4 scientists that I need and the other two are on the brink of chaos...

I see that I will have to deal with 4/8 doombar.

What are the other rewards? If one is engineers, go with that one.

I need a bigger TV or to sit closer to the screen, I'm having a bitch of a time telling my guys apart on the map. Everyone is a distinct color too, but it's just so zoomed out : /

Resorted to giving them names like Shooty McShootfar to my Sniper and Fat Albert to my Heavy to make it easier.

These two issues are the main culprits prohibiting me from buying this game so far. I really dont like how aliens "spawn"? Its not random everytime? And is there any rhyme or reason as to why aliens can suddenly appear in a certain place?

This game is so damn good. I played the originals when I was younger (thanks to dad). Man I'm having a blast. However I don't know how long this game is but I feel like the original might be more in depth. We shall see I've only been playing a few hours.

I'm just venting a bit, sorry. I'm just totally new to Steam and don't like at all.
Steam was nearly finished installing it and then I saw that Steam was apparently downloading something connected to XCOM and I messed around with that and that propably messed up the installation process.

And I also don't remember that installing games from disc took so long. Okay, the installation is 13 GB big but it takes more than an hour...

I didn't know that aliens could shoot down satellites. razzumfrazzum

they take soooo long to build!

the game really has an amazing variety of ways to kick you in the balls.

Has anyone figured out why you get ultra low percentages sometimes when your only one space away from an alien? There must be some gameplay rule I am unaware of.

Are you using a sniper rifle? They have a a minimum range threshold, after which they'll get less and less accurate. Pull out a pistol at that range, or have someone else shoot. Otherwise, it may be a bug.

CURRENT FAVORITE XCOM MOMENT:

a zombie shambles off the rooftop and before it even hits the ground, my sniper, who i'd put into overwatch manage to get a shot in as it was falling that left it with one hp, and as soon as it got up my heavy unloaded bucketshot into it to finish it off..

it was teamwork
and it was beautiful

has anyone ever killed an enemy before it hit the ground while in overwatch?

Do the heavies ever get any other weapons available to them? I imagine they must, but they're just falling behind the curve when my Sniper has a laser rifle and my Assaults and Supports all have plasma...

Once it happened with a sniper, yes. But I recall a heavy artillery and a shotgun guy doing the same thing as a floater landed right behind the car I had all my guys lined up against.

No, but two soldiers in overwatch blasted the fuck out of a running sectoid AT THE SAME TIME. Little grey man thought he could strut around from tree to tree. Glorious cut scene.

Nice. Speaking of cut scenes, has anyone turned them off? I originally thought I would tire of them quickly, but they have just become part of the battle to me. I don't foresee turning them off.

Yeah, my heavy got a laser weapon about the same time I got all the other laser tech. I think it was called just heavy laser or something, I cant remember if you need to reserach seperately or just build it after you reserach laser rifles

I've had plenty if great over watch moments, I had one particularly good one where I opened a door to reveal a Mutron, only to have five of my guys pop out of cover and perforate him with all kinds of ordinance.

Only two shots actually connected though, but it was cool to watch.

I've had so many great Overwatch moments that I've lost count, especially with my snipers and their Opportunist perk.

Yep. In my experience, nothing beats perfectly positioning your dudes in overwatch, especially snipers, then have an assault class guy come close to a big enemy and use the flush out of cover ability. It has saved my life a million times, especially later on when enemies have like 25 points of HP. My Snipers do 19 point crits at this point.

I think when you have multiple Overwatch shots on the same guy, it only bothers to connect enough hits to kill him.

I've been using nearly all snipers in my game. The 4 out of the first 5 rookies I ranked up turned out to be snipers, it was wierd. Now they run the show and take out everyone from afar. My ace, Susan, is fully ranked up now. She can %100 mobs from accross the map. I send out my assault and heavy and then she just mops up using their sight. Best skill in the game imo (maybe the shotgun doble pump)
