Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

Just things like aggressive LODs and pop-in and shadow issues. The time of day change was odd at the beginning as it was supposed to be dawn where you'd see long shadows but most of the world was lacking them. Still looks beautiful, though, and runs well thus far. That's the important point. Making sacrifices in order to hit a performance target is a good thing.

I just can't be impressed with graphics where objects don't react to lighting properly anymore , this is something I noticed right away in the trailer, and gameplay I saw in videos. I still remember to this day the first time I saw red dead redemption, that lighting engine in a impressive looking open world game, that runs well, honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing. very disappointing for a game released in 2015 to be missing something which is now basic in open world games.

I think it's disappointing that games still get released in 2015 at anything less than 1080p60fps.

But then again, there are no consoles with 2015 hardware, so I guess it's okay.

It's a shame this game won't be considered game of the year because of its late release

A lot of gaming sites and publications have had the game for what seems like a couple of weeks now and will have had it for a full month before release. Nintendo has done their best to give sites time to consider it. It's still not as much time as you would want to weigh such a large game but I think, if it's good, it will factor into the considering for some sites for best RPG.

As for GAF, the voting for GOTY runs well into January now which will give people enough time to play.

A good story is better when it surprises you.

For me anyway.

I'm definitely the same way. Xenoblade's story wouldn't have been nearly as entertaining to me if I had known all the twists coming later in the game. Even some twists that I probably should have seen coming, but didn't, lol.

Basically anything that happened
in Mechonis Core - loved that part.

3 long years. The wait is almost over.

Red dead had lots of glitches and framerate issues. Tell me this is just your usual lying through your teeth Schtick and you aren't pulling the "it performed better than this because Wii u sucks" concern trolling. I mean the PS3 of red dead was subhd and neither of them maintained 30 as soon as you were outside. Both versions suffered tons of drops.

Yeah, gimme a fucking break here.

Sub HD+Quincux, the image quality was hot garbage on PS3. 360 was better (720p+MSAA 2x iirc, also had way more grass on screen) but those you listed weren't the only problems with the game's graphics. Sure it looked great back then, but now? ...Yeah, better keep intact the good memories of a really great game and move on.

I doubt an earlier release would've helped it in that regard. Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited for it and expect it will be released to very positive reception, but this year has seen much bigger releases that will overshadow it -- not just due to the month it came out.

Yeah, this game had the misfortune of releasing in a year where there three other massive RPGs that came out, and none of them had to contend with their predecessor being Gamestop exclusive.

Can you miss sidequests?
No, you can miss some normal or simple quests, but they will show up again at some point.
the game is overwhelming also for those who spent 100+ hours with XenoWii.
So:

1) apart from the orders you can give to your partners, is there a way to directly control one of the other party memebers during fights?

2) do the party members upgrade their experience even if they are not active on the battleground?

3) do the different techniques still affect the damage differently based on you positioning compared to the monster?
1) you mean changing the person you control? Yes there is, but chain attacks are no more. And you can only change it outside of battle.

2) no, as far as we know.

3)Yes, and they added up and down variations of positioning too.

I mean, when you compare it to stuff on the PC or newer consoles, yes, it looks dated. When I say it looks impressive, I'm also keeping in mind that it's on less powerful hardware.

I still look back at Sega Saturn and PS2 games and find myself highly impressed by what was achieved there.

Something doesn't need to be cutting edge to be impressive.

For the Wii U, X looks very nicely and, most importantly, runs very consistently. It does not look realistic, but I don't feel it needs to either. It looks good for what it is and I think Monolith did a great job. The game was in development for an extremely long time as well so a lot of modern approaches to lighting and materials probably would never have been possible here even if the hardware were faster.

Why exactly do they do this? I mean, are there people who actually want to see the final boss/ending on the day the game releases? o.O
Dunno about endgame spoilers, but I know some few middle game big spoilers.
And it's hella fun to see all the foreshadowing, like it so well foreshadowed I get blown away everytime.
Guess it's some things that people dismiss only because it's a game and all, when they have a meaning behind it, I fucking love it!
But I agree that seeing the last boss battle beforehand is bad.

The game was in development for an extremely long time as well so a lot of modern approaches to lighting and materials probably would never have been possible here even if the hardware were faster.

This is probably the most important fact from you post, not to play down the others. We usually underestimate how industry-wide approaches can make your game look dated or even affect your pipeline during development at times. A year of development time can make your game look old already the way the industry moves now.

I don't know how you get bigger than this

RDR is at most 12 square miles, X is about 250 square miles. That is more than 20 times bigger.

Then take into account the massive mountains and varying terrain, flora, huge monsters, etc.

Then many reviewers say you can roam aimlessly and still have so many things to do so these are empty miles.

Do you need to shit on every Wii U game no matter what?

But is it basic for open-world RPGs and MMOs? Those are a more relevant comparison than open-world action games or AAA western RPGs, and I don't see MMOs doing that anytime soon. There may be exceptions, but I wouldn't consider that "basic" for 2015 or earlier.

But there is more to technical proficiency in graphics than lightning behaving like you would prefer it to behave.

The scale of the world in XBX is enormous and probably the biggest game of the current generation that isn't procedurally generated, and it's rendered completely seamlessly without a single load screen. Creatures in the world are plentiful and have their own ecosystem, regardless of where you are on the map, with many of them being of varying sizes and having very detailed animations. The texture detail at the highest LOD is very good, even if the LOD system itself is pretty aggressive. And as mention before, lots of per-object motion blur in a given scene.

All of this going on with a real-time TOD system which changes the lighting in the environment respectively. Yes, concessions have to be made, but XCX is better off because of those concessions. Comparing XCX to RDR is meaningless when XCX has a much bigger world to render, with much better draw distances, and can be viewed from literally anywhere on the map, including high altitudes in the sky.

Considering Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 released this year, there is no chance that Xenoblade would have taken RPG GotY in vast majority of publications.

Finding quest was tedious in Xenoblade

yeah i always felt worried I was going to miss a good quest/questline that gave me something worthwhile. it encouraged exploring but sometimes i just checked and doublechecked areas at day and night. it was troublesome to me personally.

What's the file size the the digital version? Is there a day one patch and how big are the patches usually?

I want to see if I could fit it directly on my Wii U.

When's the cutoff? If the cutoff is after XCX's release, I could very well see this game doing a clean sweep of GOTY awards.

In more mainstream publications? Ehh, don't see it. What makes you think that? Especially considering by all reports story and RPG aspects have been toned down (see Fallout 4 as well).

Hell, if we are talking actual RPG vs open world discussion, you could make the case for TitS SC taking GotY in RPGs. And then Trails of Cold Steel is releasing end of December.

Overall though I don't see how anything is going to beat Witcher 3.

Xenoblade Chronicles X digital version is ~22-23GB (based on the Japanese version)

Trails games are incredibly niche. They're not likely to show up on any GotY lists outside of sites dedicated to RPGs.

I never heard like even once on RPG aspects being tone down in Xeno X like at all here.

Hell, the game seems to double down on that aspect if u ask me. Even more customization, a lot of different kind of faction to join, and more focus on the exploration. The story takes more step back as they focus more on story building through 3 kinds of quest.

I can't see at all how TitS getting GoTY like at all here especially with that bad pacing and even more unintuitive battle system compared to Xenoblade

Ironically, I don't see Witcher 3 doing that well. A lot of people like it, but it's surprisingly niche. Despite the controversy, expect MGSV to clean up at most places, some F4 in others. Maybe even Bloodborne.

As for this game doing a "clean sweep" of GOTY awards, I strongly doubt it. Most people I've talked to who have played it love it, but not so much that it's their favorite game of the year.

TitS GOTY
:3
I'm a child

Oh my god each passing day time slows down more and more. Can't wait to play. Got two week vacation all lined up. Last time I did this at the same time period was for Ni No Kuni and my god that game was so memorable. I have a good feeling it'll be as good or even better this time around !

I am only talking about RPGs here. There is 0 chance of Xenoblade taking actual GotY outside RPG category and very small chance even with that.

TitS SC has great characters, great writing, interesting and complex plot and actual char development. The combat system is fairly simple as well. Now, the graphics are extremely outdated but they are still very serviceable.

So in RPG category I can see TitS SC take the award but of course it's not very likely. Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 will clean up. I can also see these two take some overall GotY awards depending on publication.

Edit: oh, and I don't think Witcher 3 is that niche anymore. It's going to sit at over 8 million by year's end.

Xenoblade Chronicles X isn't getting GOTY here either cause even ignoring literally every other company, NIntendo fans are probably gonna put Splatoon above it.

Because this game has been getting nothing but unfettered, unanimous praise from the west, and its predecessor was considered to be one of the greatest RPG's of all time.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if this game swept up several awards, including GOTY.

In a year where Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Etc released there is no way the west is going to put this as anyone's game of the year. Maybe on personal lists but I don't see it at all from big sites.

Even though I'm hyped and I'm sure it will be pretty great judging from the impressions.

I admire your optimism, but I just don't see it. Would be a nice surprise though.

i was talking about the 360 version which is a pretty solid 30fps, and is 720p, with better AA then x, and has a ton of alpha textures every where.

i was comparing it to 360/ps3 rockstar games obviously, it's kinda not fair since those games have a way bigger budget, and one has framerate issues.i find games with out atleast a somewhat modern light system just boring to look at it, and just look very dated to me, but i guess it's just my opinion. its nothing against the wiiu, but lighting always makes a huge difference to me, and have always noticed since the ps2 era, games like MGS2 and GT3 looked nextgen compared to dreamcast mainly cause of the lighting, even last gen uncharted 1 destroyed gears of war cause of the lighting, it took them until gears of war 3 to finally have some comparable lighting/shadows, just something i always paid attention to, and makes a huge difference for me in every gen when it comes to graphics.
