Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

So I played an hour just to see how it's looking and I walked away impressed.

You can see its limitations, but it runs quite well and includes some things I didn't expect (such as object motion blur in many instances).

I must say that it feels 100x better to play than Xenoblade simply due to the animation. The original was just so sloppy looking in motion. Terrible running and jumping animations that cheapened the presentation. Here, though, characters have more weight and feel connected to the world while running around. The sense of scale is also much larger.

The first town in Xenoblade always felt barren as if you were exploring a distant LOD model rather than a proper town. NLA feels genuinely massive in comparison. Much more immersive.
Glad you were impressed, what did you specifically mean by limitations tho?

OT subtitles? Well, since the game releases in December, how about...

Xenoblade Chronicles X |OT| The wind blows hard in December

Sorry, I had an Uncontrollable urge to share that. ;P lol

Omg, thanks to the Engrish I never realized that's what he sings there, and I listened to the ost quite a few times already. I definitely approve of this subtitle now, mind = blown.

edit: Now that I think about it, maybe |OT| We're stuck on a whole different planet might be a bit better for the music joke in the subtitle, as people are bound to hear this song early on in the game and is a bit more prominent and cheesy in the song.

the game is overwhelming also for those who spent 100+ hours with XenoWii.
So:

1) apart from the orders you can give to your partners, is there a way to directly control one of the other party memebers during fights?

2) do the party members upgrade their experience even if they are not active on the battleground?

3) do the different techniques still affect the damage differently based on you positioning compared to the monster?

Yes.
No.
I don't know.

I remember this game gettimg mixed reviews in april, why is it being regarded so high before the international release?
It got mixed reviews in the import thread mainly because :
- half of the testers didn't know japanese
- expected witcher 3 story telling
- anti-loli/puritains team bashing the game.
You've the same pattern with Fire Emblem fate threads now.

At that time it was better to watch streams rather than reading the import thread because you could see how geniously Streamers were enjoying the game with their watchers.

Could anyone recommend me any longer videos of the game? I've already watched the gamexplain stuff, looking for something else. Preferably in one part.

Just things like aggressive LODs and pop-in and shadow issues. The time of day change was odd at the beginning as it was supposed to be dawn where you'd see long shadows but most of the world was lacking them. Still looks beautiful, though, and runs well thus far. That's the important point. Making sacrifices in order to hit a performance target is a good thing.

We need the original X.gif, the one where the character climbs the into the mech at the beginning.

It's been a long ride lol

yes.gif

Is there a shot of his face overall, i kind of want to do that as well lol or was he the Shulk look-alike from the first trailer.
I'm on mobile so I can't look it up for you, but I think there was a shot of his face inside a doll in the E3 2014 trailer. I didn't like it that much, though, so as long as I get the back right, I'm fine. :P

Xenoblade Chronicles X |OT| Found that key they lost

There's a couple of 2 and 3 hour lets plays that have popped up on YT. But majority of them I've seen are up through Chapter 2. I'm trying not to go past that

Yep, from what i've seen the game really looks impressive, especially out in the wild. My main problem with the graphics is that textures of "artificial" objects are pretty terrible, and lack of PBR really hurts imho (especially in NLA and indoor). Games like Zelda U, Mario 3D World, Toad, MK8 and Fast Neo seem to use some form of it or at least they are able to achieve similar results, so i wonder what happened here. Maybe development started a bit too early?

Also, holy shit at the sense of scale. XB was already impressive in that regard.
The US preload has been live since the Direct. Europe has been really quiet on the matter, along with their plans for the data packs for disc players.
Yeah they really need to release it before the game comes out.

I guess I just don't understand why people want to see that stuff if they are going to be playing the game, anyways. *shrug* Then again, I'm very sensitive to story spoilers.

As others have said, I hope they thumbnail it properly.
I like gamexplain but I had to unsuscribe when they spoiled the last boss of a game with a thumbnail. I also don't like their constant searching of every detail I would like to experience myself and it's not that I could just avoid the video, because I'm going to have it spoiled on Gaf or Facebook or my website with a title or a gif.

Why exactly do they do this? I mean, are there people who actually want to see the final boss/ending on the day the game releases? o.O

have you ever looked at a spoiler thread here? Lots of people just don't give a shit and read/watch everything before playing. I don't get it either but it happens.

Spoilers are fun. A good story isn't ruined by knowledge of it, and for me at least, knowing about cool shit coming later gets me more hyped while playing a game. That and the whole "It's the journey, not the destination" thing, which applies 100% of the time IMO.

A good story is better when it surprises you.

For me anyway.

Even without spoilers, nothing well-written surprises me anymore. There's just only so many "twists" that, if supported by the rest of the work, are going to happen, and once you've watched/read/played enough media, logical event progression is easy to guess.

Maybe you just spoil yourself on all the good twists and not the predictable ones. Then you say "oh I totally would have seen that coming" but you can't know for sure because your hindsight is forward.

It could happen.

I wanted to wait a little bit longer to get a Wii U but damn it I can't resist a Xeno game. Wii U ordered! Now to wait to find out about the EU patches before I decide on digital or retail! Also need to book a week off so I can't properly lose myself in Mira, can't wait!

Ninjablade vindicated. Wii U garbage.
