Xenogears/Xenosaga games - worth it?

- Would you rate Xenogears as one of the best on PSX? Does it still hold up?

- And what about the Xenosaga games?

- How would you rate this series compared to all the A+ RPGs you've played?

Xenogears absolutely. Worth playing. Heavy handed at times, but still worth playing.

Avoid Xenosaga. After the high you'll have coming off of XG, you're going to be horrifically disappointed

Xenogears? Fuck. Yes.

Xenosaga (Series)? Huge Dissapointment

Xenogears is a classic and is held very high in my book. Xenogsaga is a mediocre pale image of what Xenogears prequals should have been.

No, Kinda

No

D--

Xenogears = yes, just have a lot of patience with the second disc and some dungeons.

Xenosaga = yes, just don't expect Xenogears, has some references to it, nothing more. Still a fun game.

Xenosaga Ep. 2 = read a faq or something, this is more like Xenosaga 1.2

Good games, but aside from Shenmue I've never seen a stronger "love it or hate it" franchise.

No. Yes, it still holds up as a blah game to me.

Did not play them.

Piss poor.

Xenogears - Heck yeah

Xenosaga - Buy one or two movie DVDs. You'll get roughly the same experience or better but for less money.

I love Xenogears battle system and yes I think it still hold up

;_;

Its probably one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I love the main protaganist of this game for some reason and all the characters in the game were fleshed out pretty well (IMO). The Second Disk thing is true but the game as a whole is great.

- According to people I know, disc one only. Disc two will literally make you pass out from War and Peace amounts of text. Personally, not worth playing when there's better out there. And no.

- Hell no.

- Just NO.

I'm the exception here:

Xenogears = no
Xenosaga 1 = yes, for bargain price only. I really liked the characters. The battle system was clonky, but not horrible.
Xenosaga 2 = no

Wow, I'm surprised at how positive most people are about Xenogears in this thread. I give it my fullest recommendation. Xenosaga, not so much.

I still have the original strategy guide (just found it lying in a box somewhere) its a little bit on the tattered side but it brought back alot of fond memories about the game.

Oh, how these threads hurt me inside.

<3 Xenoseries even though they raped the battle system in saga 1. Xenosaga 2's battle system was good though, not sure why everyone doesn't like the awesome Zone system.

And of course Xenogears is the best.

Xenogears looks like a love it or hate it game, and it's a really long game too so I wanted to cross it off the list.

Looks like I'll at least have to try it. -_-

It's good though that most agree Xenosaga sucks (or just average/not awesome games). I started this thread because I'm trying to clear out some RPGs out of my back log and that's 2 (or 3 if you count the 3rd PS2 game coming out) RPGs cleared out. :)

I don't think Xenosaga sucks. The battle system in Episode II is broken, but I like the series' story. So far, Episode III looks like it's going to be really good.

I played Xenogears years ago, OK game, not great IMO.

Xenosaga Ep. 1 (I never bothered with part 2) however, is one of the, if not THE worst game I have ever played. Barely any gameplay and what is there was horrible. The cutscenes even have save points. And then theres the scene where it just lets you loose on the ship to bring the evil looking guy his dinner and gives you NO idea where he is. It took me an hour to find him just for that menial task.

Much like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears does not deserve to fade into obscurity.

It's a remarkable but highly flawed title. Recommended for people who like drama.

Xenogears - It starts off good then takes a turn for the worst. I recently played it again and blogged it. It makes for an unintentionally funny read starts off with so much promise.

However, with all that's wrong with the game some things are very right. There is a huge backstory, creating a very believable world. The game has countries each with it's own motives. Countries. Think about that. Even the darlings of RPG-dom FF6, FF7, and FF10 only really had one evil or governing body: Vector, Shin-ra and Yevon.

No wonder Shevat is losing the war, if this is the best they can do for an emergency. What kind of game design is this? I can imagine the meeting:

Level designer: "Sir, we don't have time to draw a good map."
Tetsuya Takahashi: "Just draw a few paths and a bunch of circles that'll prolong gameplay some."

Takahashi, if I ever meet you I'll kick your ice teeth in.

Really when playing through the Babel tower, one gets the feeling that you're playing through the worst that RPGs have to offer.

Not much to say about it other than it's become a quest now to finish this thing. The game still hasn't really jumped the shark, but I know it's coming....Oh gosh...why do I do this to myself....

I HATE XENOGEARS. I HATE IT, I HATE IT, I HATE IT!!!!...
People play videogames to play through events, not be shown them.

Xenogears cannot even keep this most basic rule of videogames....A good example is preparations for an attack take 12 minutes (I kid you not...12 MINUTES) of explanation of how they're going to get up the special generators. WHO THE %$#)$#*__)$#@(_%#@$ CARES!!!! This is a game!!! I got this to play, to fight the bad guy, to go on an adventure and save the world. Not to spend twelve minutes hearing about STUPID GENERATORS!!!!

Xenosaga- ARE YOU MAD?!!! This is Xenogears minus the things that made Xenogears a little bareable.

Xenogears was an awesome game. I really enjoyed it.

I was also 17 and had a ton of free time on my hands to not only play the game, but also sit around convince myself that it actualy made sense in the first place.

If you really like the 50+ hr RPG's, it's a good one. I liked the combo system and using the mechs. very entertaining. I dont know how much I would like it if I played it today though.

Xenosaga looked stupid so I never played it.

:lol Do you have a link to the full blog? That mirrors my own appreciation curve with the game almost exactly.

It took me a year to finish Xenogears, playing it on and off, and at the end I thought: 'Damn, I could have played 2-3 much better games with the time I wasted.' I am a huge fan of Chrono Trigger and thought this would be just as good, if not better, because it was made by essentially the same Squaresoft team. NOT.

It starts off very fascinating, and slowly, slowly, ever so s-l-o-w-l-y the plot unfolds and you begin to realize that the game's story is not going pay off in proportion to all the time and effort it takes to unravel. Some cool scenarios and a great concept, but the execution utterly kills the enjoyment. Clumsy storytelling technique, poor translation, annoying random battles, plain dungeons with irritating, repetitive layouts, anime cliches in full force, and the WEAKEST ENDING EVER.

Xenogears was essentially incomplete as evidenced by the chair scenes on the second disc. Also the localization was indeed horrible. Another 6 months in the shop and I think it would've turned into a much better product. Oh hells yah to the anime cliches, Xenogears is the videogame equivalent of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Though, I might argue that at the time of Xenogears release, they weren't so cliche to me. :)

Yeah, uh... I bought Xenogears (used) a long time ago. I think I played for 10-15 hours before stopping. It just didn't interest me.

I still have it.

I bought Xenosaga for reasons I'm still unsure of, and quickly sold it :lol

Xenogears: maybe, but I haven't touched it in ages

I actually welcomed the switch in the second disc to the cutscenes followed by a warp straight to a boss battle.

It was much better than cutscenes, followed by a long town sequence, followed by a long crawl through a drab random-encounter filled dungeon, followed by more cutscenes, followed by a boss battle.

The sidequest in the underground city was one of my favorite moments in the game as well, and it was an optional event in the second disc.

HEY WHAT'S SPANISH FOR NO?

OH THAT'S RIGHT

NO

It got a reprint in late 2003, I believe. It dropped in price immensely. I remember rebuying for about 45 bucks in December of 2002.

'Gears: "The spirit was willing, but the funds were weak."

Highlights are Mitsuda, Citan, and the plot points. Lowlights are the noticible drop in 'heft' on disc 2, some queasiness with the plot at times, and that damn pink "thing".

'Saga 1: "Otaku $$$ get!"

Highlights are graphics, basics of battle...um... Lowlights: cheating enemies later, cutscenes that fake you into paying attention thinking you need to remember all this for the plot, only to have it become known to you that it's idle chit-chat. Sold it.

'Saga 2: "After the first one? Are you nuts?"
