Xenogears/Xenosaga games - worth it?

Chu Chu on the cross!

THAT was its name! UGH. That was after the part where
you had to bust into the downed spacecraft from the openning cinema; I was like "nice, I get to see this 10k year old city-sized ship with this outer space life-form entity deal-thingie as the boss!" and I got one tough as shit battle and then THAT.
Blech.

Yeah Xenosaga is for dumbheads. Don't play that one. It has none of the awesome GOD KILLING ROBOTS AND NOW CLICHE ANGST WITH MARTIAL ARTS that Xenogears does.

Thanks. I forgot how bad the pacing was at points. Like you mentioned, a huge planetary battle is reduced to lines of text on a static background image, while something mundane like powering up a generator or walking out of an emergency hatch is given excruiating detail. Ugh.

Xenogears, like Final Fantasy VII, is a game I wouldn't fault you for thinking is cool. If you were 15.

Those of us with any sense see it as a story that had potential, but fell to pieces once God got involved. Xenosaga is the same -- wasted potential.

Right, because FFVII had such redeemable qualities about such as a good cast, planned out story, good soundtrack, interesting battle system...

Oh wait, FFVII had none of those. Xenogears, on the other hand, did.

Plus, FFVII won't die. It's crappiness continues to live on. At least those who dislike Xenogears give it a rest.

Ignore the Gears haters, its not their fault they prefer RPGs with a fun battle system, or characters that serve a purpose other than advancing the mediocre plot.
Fixed.

FFVII had a decent OST, and a story just as "deep" as Xenogears. Neither had an engaging battle system.

Throughout the entire first disc of Xenogears, I felt the game was walking a very fine line. It was far too heavy on dialogue and too light on interaction, and the whole way through it was almost enough to make me stop playing. But the story, music, and combat were all good enough that I never quite put it down.

Then I got to disc 2. The second disc takes the "too much dialogue, not enough interaction" aspect and multiplies it by about a hundred.

FFVII had a decent OST

If it came out pre-SNES...

Neither had an engaging battle system.

Agreed, but if given the choice, I'd pick Xenogears. Discovering combos was interesting rather than ANOTHER ATB + menu based system (again, pre-SNES here, hm.) plus you had the geas system, which was much better here than in Xenosaga.

And, are we talking Xenogears here, or Xenosaga Episode 2? At least that had a coherent ending...

Dunno what you mean by "deep" but XG obviously had a lot more thought and detail put into its setting, backstory, etc. The battles aren't great but they at least have some semblance of balance, compared to FF7/8's horrible brokenness.

Unless you're an anime fanboy who only plays RPGs for the cut-scenes, the Xeno series is an unequivocable No to All.

I'm talking OST quality, not synth quality. FFVII had some decent music.

Yes, blindly punching in random buttons hoping to unlock a new combo sounds like loads of fun.

Just saying that, like FFVII, the Xeno series continues to live on.

Every single RPG that has ever come out can be given the "The storyline was good if you were 15" monicker. The game was just memorable but its naive to think that every single person would like it. But to give it that monicker given above would be false because i'm sure there are people that are getting into this game (as adulst and RPG fan) that are well above the age of 15.

I'd rather have Xenogears that uses a plot device thats overused but pulls it off well than a RPG that tries to hard to break the mold and do everything possible to not use cliches.

Yes, FFVII had some decent music. For Uematsu, however, decent is pretty mediocre aside from One-Winged Angel and Aerith's Theme.

Say what you will about Xenogears (and I'm surprised this thread has been this positive about the game, I thought GAF hated this series), but Mitsuda had some pretty incredible stuff for the game.

And I guess we'll agree to disagree over the battle systems of both...thank God FFXII isn't another ATB system!

That's because the group of RPG players that have been on the forum the longest (who were also the most vocal closer to when the game was released) don't like it in general. Since those folks (myself, Drinky, Pellham, Dragona, Scarlet and a few others) are still around, that perception still remains.

I agree, although I have this deep anger when I hear critism about Xenogears. I think thats the only series were such a reaction comes out of me when it gets criticized....

;_; oh noes ;_;

Haven't gotten around to starting Xenosaga yet, but Xenogears is a love it or hate it type of game. It is one of my all time favorite rpgs and probably my favorite rpg on the PSX but it definitely has some warts. Overall, Xenogears has the best story I have ever seen in a rpg, and honestly nothing else I have played has even come close, but the gameplay in the game is horrible. If you could like a game with an epic story and probably the best rpg soundtrack of all time than try it out, but if you want a rpg with fun and deep gameplay try elsewhere.

Those of us with any sense recognize that the story's a Gnostic (not Judeo-Christian) parable, and appreciate it for what it is. :p (And the entire point was that
Deus isn't God.

The materia system rocks, WTF.
And the GF system wasn't that bad either.

They are all worth playing if you like rpgs and good plot/characters/music/battle-system.

Xenogears is a masterpiece though...

Gnosticism draws from many sources, including the Judeo-Christian traditions.

You're not telling me anything I don't know, but thank you. :) My point was that people who don't know a damn thing about Gnosticism are the ones who are the most outspoken about things like
how the game is supposedly about 'killing God' or how 'God is evil' - which isn't the case per se, but people are misled by the use of the word 'Deus' in the same way the Gnostics suggest we in the real world have been misled
, or the supposed 'warping' of Judeo-Christian terms and symbols, not realizing that this stuff didn't originate with Takahashi, but with the Gnostics.

I thought Xenogears was a festering pile of crap, so you'll get a no from me. Haven't played the Xenosaga games, don't plan to.

My post was for clarification, mostly for lurkers. I figured you did know , but most do not know much about Gnosticism and its history. Your point is well taken.

<On soap box>

I notice that many Japanese developers seem to have a distorted view of western religions like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. I don't think they "get" gnosticism either. Their use of symbolism and dialog belies their misunderstanding. I haven't seen a western developer handle Shintoism or Buddhism well. Both east and west developers use Hindu symbols quite disrespectfully.

<Off soap box>

Back on topic, I never finished Xenogears. The battle system just turned me off. I sold if for a profit!

All these years? I came back in February of this year, after posting for like 5 months in 2001 (whenever DQ7 came out in Japan and Chrono Cross came out in the US, and when ohpa got to 10,000 posts).

Whoa.

WHOA.

Man, I don't care if someone doesn't like FFVII, but a bad soundtrack?

One of the best ever.

In closing, die.

Still just being Zeo. :)

Despite the variety of different opinions for Gears, the Saga games seem a little more consistent in their reception..
