Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

I was planning on platinuming this game, but I'm gonna need a god damn guide for some of these minigames. Mahjong in particular, but the some of the gambling ones, too. I mean, what the fuck is Koi Koi even?

There should be pretty decent guides for the games within the actual game menu's. But if you need extra help go to Gamefaqs and look up any of the guides the user "Barticle" has done. He's written great in depth guides and he has been a great help to me learning the basics of Mah Jong (as such I managed to clear all the Mah Jong related challenges in this).

Koi Koi is a weird one, as its still kinda luck based at times, but my advice would be to learn the card combos that will score you points (this'll take a while), then try and focus on certain combo's depending on the cards you get dealt. Sometimes it'll be worth your while to go for a low scoring win (getting 10 common cards) if you see that the opponent is on the verge of a big win. You won't get many points yourself, but you'll prevent the AI from getting a big win. Its by far the hardest of the 4 Japanese gambling games for me to learn, but it does get pretty darn addictive once you get the hang of it. I'd say Mah Jong is way easier to learn if you put some time into it, but gets insanely addictive (its one of my favourite mini games in the series now!)

Is there anything I should be doing specifically to ensure I find/do side quests? Right now I am on Chapter 2 and my objective is to
find the homeless men
.

I don't want to be speeding through the story too quickly if there's lots of side content that I could be easily missing, and from checking the map I can see that there's no icons/indicators on where the side quests are. Is it just a case of running around and exploring? I sorta just stumbled in to the
Producer
side quest by accident, due to me just running down the street that it is on. I just want to soak up as much of this game as possible!

Thanks.

Edit: Also, are the side quests always available? Or are they tied to certain chapters? E.g. a side quest that can be found in Chapter 2 is only available for that one chapter? Or could it be located/completed later in the game (say, Chapter 8)?

I am in the exact same boat.

The skill based games like bowling and batting are fine but the Japanese games like Shogi and shit have me stumped big style

You'll just naturally run into them if you explore the game world and do mini games. Also keep in mind not every side mission opens up at once. Your still early in the game, more side stories open as you keep playing.
Also keep in mind you can get a side story radar by picking the black present in the second Miracle Johnson side story.
Lastly, any side stories you "miss" can just be done in Premium Adventure mode so you can't really miss anything, the game prompts you before you hit that "point of no return" on the final chapter so you can mop up anything else you've not completed yet if you prefer to do things in one playthrough.

I'm glad I'm not going into this game with a completionist mindset. The huge number of dumb minigames with surprising depth really works to break up the repetition and get you lost in the game world. But I'm not learning how to play fucking mahjong or shogi or whatever. I'll dive into the ones I think are interesting - god knows I lived in the disco and slot car racing for hours. To say nothing of Outrun...although I'm too good at space harrier to need to practice that.

I can't say that trophies were totally pointless though, the one for watching a certain kind of video was pretty good.

The two I'm struggling with are the batting (sinkers wreck me) and the disco dancing. The colours are so poorly chosen I struggle to actually see them against the background.

Well, I straight up can't beat Mr Shakedown any more. He's powered up to what I assume is the final stage, where his health bar starts at purple and he can do his charge and leaping grab moves any time he likes, and I just can't do it. One hit from him when he's in his Heat mode knocks me down, and then he stomps on me and it's all over. I can dodge everything he has, but I just can't do it for several minutes without ever screwing up once. I always end up getting backed into a corner so the camera goes a little weird and I try to dodge sideways but end up dodging backwards and eating a charge move.

I've spent the last ninety minutes just failing over and over, so I'm just going to avoid him from now on. It would have been much more lucrative to just stand in the real estate office letting my money build up for all that time. Ugh, time to go back to the fun part of this game, I think. Stop torturing myself.

Holy fuck, I really didn't expect (BIG spoiler Chapter 10)
Tachibana to be the man with the bat tatoo :O This story keeps delivering, cannot wait to see how Majima and Kiryu's plot are interconnected at the end

Yeah, when I saw that I was like "what? WHAT? WHAAAAAT?!" Great moment. :D

Use weapons. My personal picks would be the iron bar/ballbuster and the slime gun. Make sure you have a lot of heat regenerating items, and abuse heat actions. Once he gets to his Yellow Heat mode, swtich to the slime gun and kite him. The slime gun does HUGE damage on him for some reason.

Who are you playing as? You can do it with Kiryu or Majima but here are an extra few pointers.

- With Kiryu make sure you're using his rush style as it has a ability where you can build up heat with a successful dodge. With Majima his thug style has a ability where dodging can build up heat.
- Make sure your equipment is upto gear and also look for a sacrifice stone. Having these equipped basically restores all your health after it reaches 0, but it'll break and you'll have to equip another one. You can buy this at the arms dealer.
- If you want to play dirty I'd recommend building up your heat with the above styles and then using your knife active a heat move. Continue this process and his relatively easy.

I know, that's exactly what I've been doing. I tried the legit way, then I tried the cheesing way and I still couldn't do it. You can't do Heat moves on him when he gets down to his Yellow Heat mode, and I just catch one of those charges every single time, then get stomped, then it's all over. I just don't have the energy to keep trying.

I'll come back to him in another thirty hours once I've poured a few billion into my upgrade tree.

have you finished the real estate questline? The thing you unlock at the end (
the fourth style with infinite upgrades
) was the key for me being able to deal with super saiyan mr.shakedown. And now I can farm them for almost 3 billion a pop while my real estate is turning over for billions each cycle. Meanwhile in cutscenes everyone is freaking out over a billion yen, lol.

I'm on hard mode, I don't know how much more/less damage he does on other difficulties. But I basically just learned which moves are 'safe' and I punish him with the square, triangle, triangle combo. A huge help was buying the abilities that prevent knockdown - I mentioned this earlier, but that style carries over some upgrades from other styles and that seems to be one of them. Knockdown into stomp is what makes him dangerous, take that out of the equation and you're in good shape.

You can also invest heavily in brawler, get drunk and go to town. But I don't like brawler that much so I'd rather put it into beast style and passive upgrades.

As Majima I just use a katana in slugger style, but it takes longer and he gets less money so I only do it for fun.

edit: oh and it goes without saying, bring a full inventory of stamina royale and chug like the world's scrubbiest dark souls player.

All shotguns destroy him. Maybe because he's so big? But yeah, when I just want to end the fight I pull one out. But that's boring.

how do i get the telephone minigame? i´m already chapter
13
.

thx.
Youve been able to access it for quite a while. As kiryu, check the bottom right side of the map for a telephone club. It's marked purple on the map.

Only kiryu can access it and it's only in Kamurocho

You should already have access to it? I already did a lot of it as Kiryu in chapter 5, you need to go to the telephone club shop, take a look on your map, it's in the pleasure king district in the bottom right as Kiryu.

I totally understand the cabaret club game for the most part, but I don't really get how to make progress in the real estate one, is there a basic guide of sorts for that?

Good news indeed. Hopefully we get a new Yakuza announcement this year around TGS then (not bothered if they decide to skip a year though to give them more time to continue building on the new engine, I've got 0 and Kiwami to play through in English this year to get my fix on the series!)
likely they will not announce any new games regarding the franchise this year. which is finally a good decision and a step forward for the team.
now they can concentrate on their new IP this year while giving more time for the other half of the team to craft the next reboot in the franchise.
this should be their strategy going forward, enough with this yearly releases it's not doing the franchise any good + it's killing the creativity of the team by not allowing them to work on something new!

Check this guide over here, is really useful:

Basically, you just have to buy properties in a specific area to gain territory. Once you own 90% of the area (by buying properties and upgrading them), the King of the area will challenge you and you have to defeat him to take full control of that area (there are for of them in total)

it's surprisingly straightforward. Just keep buying up properties and investing in them. You'll get scripted events at certain percentage levels, I forget exactly when but I think it's 60% when they send you a challenge to bet 10% of your area. But even if you don't beat them it's no big deal as you'll recoup a 10% loss quickly. At 90% they challenge you to a fight and then you can move on to the next area. It may also be gated behind story progression, I spent a ton of time in chapter 6 and I think I had to move on a bit to unlock everything past gambling king.

The hardest part was just finding all the properties. I had to look up a map of where they all are. (Fake edit: above poster just linked the one I used)

Finally completed the cabaret club stuff last night. What a rewarding, fun, and long questline. Most games these days wouldn't give you jack shit for doing something like this (at best just a trophy) but this game gives you
a complete new fighting style
. Makes it pretty worth it to do it and will push me towards completing the real estate one the next chance I get.

I guess if I were to come up with a complaint not just about this game but the series in general, it doesn't do a good job of letting me know when I'm coming up on a boss battle, or rather I don't do a good job of figuring out when a boss battle is coming.

Like you have these missions you have to do and you're doing them but I can't tell when it'll end with an opponent with an extended life bar.

You can normally tell something big is about to happen when you get a "are you sure you want to carry on" type prompt.

The trouble I feel like I'm running into is getting more advisors. I'm guessing I just have to run around and do a ton of side stories to recruit more dudes, but I really wish there was a list of what side stories correspond to which advisor. I could really use more than three people, particularly since the far right building type I have two Xs and a triangle for my options. Would appreciate a circle or double circle.

nope! still in chapter 6, & i've completed everything (great twist at the end!) :) ...

It's crazy how popular this thread is, I've never seen a yakuza thread so active.

yeah, it's taken forever for this series to finally get its due! :) ...

So I was trying to resist getting this since I'm getting the Switch next month and had Gravity Rush 2 to play through... but I'm almost done with GR2 and heck, I think I'll cancel Persona 5's special edition and order the regular one so I can fit this game into my budget instead >_>

Yeah, I'm not quite sure they'll go 2017 without announcing the game. Yokoyama mentioned the following in a recent interview:
"I think that 2017 will be the year in which we take our first steps towards “what comes next”. I’m sort of thinking of ways we can give you to enjoy a new Ryu ga Gotoku that ties together both the past and the future."
Source (super light spoilers for the end of 6 are mentioned, just to warn you)

Sounds like a new game in the series is at least being thought about. I'm all for taking a couple of years off to keep things fresh (6 could have definitely benefited from the extra dev time to get even more content in) but I see a situation similar to 6 happening - with it getting announced a year in advance of actually getting released.

As for something new. I still want my sequel to Binary Domain, I loved that game...

Protip for the batting cages... Don't pay attention to the pitch at all really. Aim the target where you want to hit the ball, then just pay attention to the characters stance. When his animation starts to ease down, that's when you wanna press the button. You will hit the ball every time.

Yeah, if you are not really into sidequests and substories it's gonna be difficult to have a good number of managers/security stuff/advisors for the real estate activity, as most of them are unlocked that way.

Don't forget to complete the Miracle Johson substories to get a really special advisor ;) (and maybe the most expensive one)

omfg the whole intro to Majima.

This game is a masterpiece.

That whole intro is top-notch level. My favourite cutscene along with chapter 6 ending so far

Yeah, my problem with most games with a lot of sidequests is I'll do them for a few hours and then decide "okay, I'm done with this, story time now", and then I'll mainline story stuff. Still, I'm at a good point for hitting sidequests now so I'll probably do that for a while and work on the real estate game.

Beat it. Really good Yakuza game, maybe even my favorite. The final boss fights were top tier, although I feel the story peaked a bit before the finale.

I liked the plot, but I feel like they really blundered on Majima from a series perspective, in a few ways. They could have just as easily given him a goofy/playful side that sometimes surfaces to balance off his somber moods (as it is with the other games, at least 3 and on), at the very least for substories, but they really wanted him to be a slightly ruder Kiryu (which is perfectly fine within the game itself, it works well for his cute cabaret club scenes). At most his zaniness it only hinted at in the smallest ways, like "the customer is king" stuff. It becomes really obvious when you run into a character who basically is Majima in a lot of ways, but horny for girls, not just good fights.

Putting aside series continuity, I think it causes his character development to be all over place in the ending scenes where they go on to link 0 and 1. I think at some point I got completely lost when it came to his relationship with
Sagawa. It just made no sense for them to be that friendly all of the sudden. A part of me wishes he was actually another, slightly more antagonistic character - perhaps a certain someone from 5 who shares a striking resemblance
. Focusing on series continuity, it's almost unbelievable how much 5 was ignored; I would even say it took me a bit out of the game whenever subjects like
marriage
and whatnot would appear in a substories or hostess interactions and get no personal comment at all from Majima.

It's still its own game, so not the biggest complaint, outside some awkward characterization in the epilogue moments and 5's character details haunting me when the discrepancy became painfully apparent. This just ended up being more of a ramble than I intended since my brain is fried some binging on Yakuza (this effect has happened to me on virtually all the games lol).

EDIT: It wasn't necessary, but I did wish they went a little more into Yumi and Yuko. Their physical absence is really felt. Could have made Y1 all the more devastating for Yuko if they made her fit a Haruka-like role, at least for post-game adventuring.

As a first time player, a lot of this didn't make sense to me either. Before going in to 0, the two people I was most aware of were Kiryu and Majima and I knew Majima was this pretty unique, crazy character.

To me, the turning point felt like it was coming after
his meeting with Shimano and Sagawa before he gets the shit beaten out of him by punks. I was thinking "Oh, this is it. He's going to turn." - Then, it didn't really realise itself. He goes kinda crazy by raiding the Dojima HQ but to be fair, Kiryu does that for much less at the beginning of the game?

Then in the epilogue, he's like "yeah, this is the new me." and it's such a huge departure, I'm not really sure in which way they wanted to develop his character.

The Sagawa thing didn't make sense to me as all I wanted to do for him during the game was hand his ass to him.

Regarding Sagawa,
it's not like Majima liked the guy by the end. It's more like he respected him because Sagawa was a Yakuza that saw his task through the end despite everything that happened. Majima said that he learned from that, which does fit his personality on future games. He gets things done, one way or another.

Regarding Y5,
the game never quite explained the circumstances regarding Majima's marriage. Park left Majima to become a producer and Majima went to the Yakuza after both split ways. There were never many details on their relationship while married or how that changed Majima.

I don't even remember when exactly it was, but I think it was before Y0 and even Y4 flashbacks happened. It's possible that after the first marriage, he doesn't want to think about that again.

Regarding him turning,
he went to the Dojima HQ to wipe out their clan alone. He beat up all grunts stationed, a chinese assassin and he was going to kill Dojima himself if Sera didn't stopped him.

Sera knew Majima was out for blood and that he wouldn't stop until everyone who was after Makoto was dead and buried. So he gets the Empty Lot, puts the assassin through the torture Majima had to endure and puts a leash no Dojima that he will never be able to escape. Dojima becomes Sera's puppet since Sera has proof of many crimes and fuck ups Dojima had to do for the Empty Lot.

I can't unlock the last sexy video. Mr libido is telling me it's the girl from club Vincent but how? I've bought all drinks and won in pool.

Wow! What an enjoyable ride. I'm too glad to have given this title a go. 2017 onto a very strong start. I may drop in some thoughts later as I'm still planning to play some post-game.

I'm in Chapter 4 and can someone explain to me why I like (to hate) Sagawa? He's obviously
an asshole to Majima, but something about them sitting together over a drink while he passively feels out and mocks Majima's goals just feels right from an antagonist POV.

While despicable, he comes off as more of a realist and even has familial bonds that Majima can parallel to, but doesn't mirror. Regardless, if he gets his or otherwise, I think the character has the potential to have a satisfying conclusion. Sagawa comes off unreasonably manipulative and demanding towards Majima, but it just as inquisitive to his absolute resolution. His speech about never washing the blood from your hands with murder comes to mind.

Maybe I'm thinking too much about it. They'll likely be disposable in the narrative.

I try to make it a point not drop in on these threads usually, but this is the beginning of a great character analysis. Me and Mr. Sam Mullen, Chairman of the Sega Clan, have two very different opinions on the character. After you beat the game, please do share your thoughts so one of us can have gloating rights.

Hey Trigger! I'm not sure if you're still lurking between all of the hours I got caught in mini-games, but I have completed the story and have collected my thoughts on Sagawa.

Endgame Spoilers:
I view him as an antagonistic mentor rallying Majima through the tough decisions and teeth-gritting chain of command that comes with being a yakuza. Majima's stubborn path before losing his eye is what put him in the current situation that he was in. Sagawa keeping Majima on a short leash was not only his way of keeping his sworn brother off his back, but a remedial education on becoming a loyal asset to the family (or mostly himself). His personal stance towards Majima is more a knowing, in terms of respective position/power/circumstance, friend than foe.

I believe Majima's resolve to withstand a year of torture, desire to re-enter family roster and defy direct orders left an impression on Sagawa which gave more insight to Majima's true persona (Mad Dog). Majima's defiant stance butts heads with Sawano's disguised compliance to Shimao. It's a relationship that Sagawa is honestly amused by and (as we see from his pained face before almost shooting Majima) finds emotional value in. Additionally, once Majima is captured,
the little bird story is yet another monologue of hard, real-world consequences punishing a bleeding heart. He wants Majima to take the lesson to heart! However, Majima's path takes a different portion of the statement to heart. The very ending where Sagawa kills the damn cat. It's a position of biting back at authority with a vengeance like when Majima finally becomes a Mad Dog.

Overall, I loved Sagawa's inclusion. He effectively served their purpose for Majima shaping his own yakuza path as I'd hoped. Sagawa starts as simply an obstacle to be feared and ends as little more than another in-family opportunist with a bullet waiting for his name. Majima finds his own ideals to follow (having more fun and cutting off unwanted shackles) while Sagawa dies in the grim real-world consequences he once feared.

It's a dynamic done many times, but rarely well. I really like how it worked out here.

If it's not too much to ask, now I'm curious what you two came up with. Maybe they're both completely different from mine!

Regarding Sagawa,
it's not like Majima liked the guy by the end. It's more like he respected him because Sagawa was a Yakuza that saw his task through the end despite everything that happened. Majima said that he learned from that, which does fit his personality on future games. He gets things done, one way or another.

Yes, the
marriage happened when he still had both eyes, and the way Ms. Park described the story, they were all still very young and dumb (late teens, 19 at the most) when it happened so it would fit that Majima was simply a kid in love.
Though some acknowledgement would have been nice.

Doesn't Vincent also have darts ?
Hmm, I think I've cleared that but I'll try again. Maybe I need to clear puzzle pool as I've only done that with Majima.

Strike, Strike, Spare...Strike, Strike, Spare...Fuck you bowling! :(

The worst thing is I got 5 or 6 strikes in a row before the "event"!

Glad to see so many new players enjoying Yakuza.

Became a fan with Yakuza 3 and has been my favorite series ever since.

Does anyone know if there are climax heat moves from Y5 in this?

I am only at chapter 3 and Majima is definitely my favorite so far.

Also can anyone tell me where I can get the Charismatic Autobiography item since playing on hard seem little easy for me?

Don't think there are any heat moves here. Just good ol' fashioned Yakuza.

Kiryu has a substory with a
Yanki band
that gives that item. Not sure about Majima.
