Coming back after getting some other stuff out of the way, in the beginning of Chapter 2. After a couple weeks I am re-acclimating myself to the combat, and kept running into a problem. If I am in Rush stance, is it a normal thing for the heat action prompt to only flash up for an instant? It happens most of the time I knock someone down, but I rarely manage to hit it. Is this just the nature of this type of stance/situation, or am I doing something wrong? I thought moving Kiryuu was the problem, or that I was just playing too mashy, but couldn't pin down the exact problem.

I think it's because you're stunning them and hitting them out of the stun. Rush style gets a special heat move that you can only use on stunned opponents, which usually happens after 10 hits or so.

Guys, the easiest way to defeat Shakedown is to buy tons of slime guns and just evade and shoot, I honestly don't know how can you have the patience to fight them normally. You are my heroes of you do that, seriously xD

I've never once used the slime gun, and I now have enough money that I literally have bought all that I can buy and don't need any more money.

It's really not that hard, once you figure him out. It's all about spacing.

When I do manage to hit it usually it is either a curb stomp or big kick. I don't think I am stunning them (which I guess is indicated by stars over the head) but will take a closer look tonight. Also need to spend more time with Brawler since everything I read suggests Rush isn't as useful later on.

in my case it got real easy once I started going in with a monster hunter mindset. I only attack when I know it's safe. It does get a bit scary once you run into the billion yen+ versions, because they get some new moves and can dodge cancel other ones. But even those tells are easy to learn and work around.

the hardest part for me was finding a decent damage way to punish his attacks. Square triangle triangle in Kiryu's fourth style seems to mess him up real good.

I'm about 30 hours into the game and am on chapter 14 or thereabouts, and I feel like I've done hardly any of the side activities more than once or twice. Feel like I need to slow down, but the story is just too good!

Is there an optimal time to really dig into the side stuff? A lot seems to have opened up in Chapter 2 but, from what I understand, the business stuff won't come until later?

I just use the Dragon Driver's Heat Move now. Finishes them in 3-4 hits well under a minute.

I'm 60 hours on chapter 13 and I feel like I've barely dented sidestories. So many exclamation points on my map. Granted a lot of my time was eaten up by the businesses.

Majima's
wife is a character from 5.

You didn't play Y5?

Ms Kanai Park is Majima's ex-wife. He loved her dearly but agreed to walk away from the marriage so that she could pursue her dream of becoming an idol...thats two broken hearts for our main man Majima.

For some reason, I completely forgot that...
I blame Haruka having the worst part in Y5... (yet I remember Ogita being her dance teacher who appears in 0...)

Ohh boy, now how did I miss that! Wow!!

I'm about to kick off the legendary difficulty soon and will be looking forward to the dance floor. Can't wait to kick his butt again.

I hate when the word "bro" is used in this game. I can deal with a little "BRO!" here & there, but it's so out of place in this game I can't wrap my head around it. I can't imagine a head boss from the Yakuza crime family referring to me as "hey, bro....".

Thankfully I haven't noticed it used that many times, but it still pains me when I do hear it.

I really wasn't feeling this game for the first good section. I liked the characters and the story but the combat was not enjoyable at all for me. The whole opening Yakuza base section and the boss just felt like too much without having a good control of everything.

Once I got out to the open town and fought a dude who pulled a knife on a girl who sold him her panties and ran into Miss Tatsu, things became much much better.

Side note, let me marry Miss Tatsu. I don't care if it creates a time paradox.

Both Kiryu and Majima's side businesses open up at predetermined points in the plot, and unfortunately, both come in at pretty tense points in the main story, so you're forced to either shove them aside for later, or start digging into them and completely dissolve the tension the game's been building up. I personally recommend waiting until a quiter point in the game before really digging into them, unless you really don't give a shit about the story.

A lot of times they say "kyoudai" which literally translates to brother. The english translation had to choose between brother and bro.

Brother makes sense for a lot of situations, but in situations like when Nishiki and Kiryu talk, they almost always mean it in a rather informal way so bro is the correct choice there.

Yakuza refer to each as "brother" all the time (at least in the series). The word referring to a boss is Aniki, which is like a Yakuza slang which means Elder (or Big) Brother.

It's just a matter of the translation not being able to accurately convey the tone without butchering the enjoyability of the dialogue in the process

In Chapter 2 as well and I was planning on messing around until I got all the 2 million upgrades then move on once the only ones left are 30 million.

Yeah, I think one of the benefits of playing Yakuza 5 and Yakuza 3 is that you really understand the distinction between Kyodai and Aniki. When you are Kyodais, you are sworn brothers so you have to respect and help each other. But being an Aniki is like being above the other person, so usually the guy who calls you Aniki will do what you tell them.

Trying to fish for a soft shell turtle for Majima's sidequest at the sushi restaurant. Is there a specific spot to fish, or a time of day to look for? These fish keep turning into handbags of money...

Very good, high quality explanation here folk.

In short,. The bro is not American cultural slanging. There's breath to it
Work hard to get over it. Respectfully.

You can catch them right behind Majima's apartment. Might need bait to get them to spawn though.

I grabbed a bunch of high-quality bait from M Store in the northeast, and used it on the fishing spot at the south side of the river (near Majima's apartment).

I fished on the far edge of the fishing area with the pole I bought from the pawn shop (holy crap was it expensive, my cabaret girls helped pay for it though).

I don't think time of day matters.

I find Mr.Shakedown to be far more manageable with Kiryu: Rush mode is OP against him for quick combos and quickly build heat, and in addition he has this awesome dagger heat move that is super effective and deals tons of damage

You want it. It gives you maximum heat ALL THE TIME!

Fuck, I want this now but it is so damn expensive :(

Just finished chapter 6...

God damn

Nishiki's performance in that cutscene is one of the best performances I've ever seen in a videogame

Thanks! I completely forgot about the bait, but I did get the peerless rod from the pawn shop so that helped. Going to go back to do some more fishing.

they are the 'fish' that look like two small circles swimming around. 99% of the time it'll be a crayfish. I think you can tell it's a turtle when it's being an asshole about biting and never fully submerges the bobber.

With how much better the voice work usually seems to be in japanese, I'm not even sad when companies don't dub games anymore. It's kind of sad really.

Yup, that just happened. Got my turtle! Back to the restaurant.

The Yakuza series was the first videogame that I experienced entirely in Japanese with only an english sub and it convinced me to broaden my horizons and to give more japanese dubs a shot.

I figured this much, & assumed there to be a cultural significance associsted with the word I wasn't familiar with. Knowing how we (sometimes) interpret "bro" in a passive aggressive tone, it ends up making some of these conversations really funny.

Either way, the dialog is amazing, "bro" or no "bro". I never expected to play such a great crime drama in video game form.

I have played several of the other games in the series but I've never been clear on what the distinction between Family and Clan is? How does that work?

Think of family as small cogs of a machine which is the clan.

A BUNCH of different families with different regions and different interests got together and formed a Clan. Usually based in a single large region, the clan functions as a sort of company in which all these independent families work and kick money up the chain to the leadership of Clan.

The benefit of this is that you have a safety net. If someone tries to attack your turf, your clan mates (i.e other families) will help you. In the event you need financial help or just some muscle power, the other families from your clan will help you. The downside is that you need to kickback money constantly to the Clan.

As hermitpurple said, it's an umbrella in which each separate family sits underneath. But one head of those families eventually becomes the dude who looks after all of this.

There are 2 Clans in the Yakuza games of course. The Omi Alliance (based out of Osaka and nearby regions) and the Tojo Clan (based out of Tokyo and nearby regions)

But sometimes Clans can be lower than families, right? Doesn't Yakuza 0 say that Kuze is head of a Clan that is subordinate to the Dojima family?

Also, does Yakuza 0 not have the super neat Alliance Trees that previous games had? It has biographies but I always liked the flow chart stuff in the earlier games.

Need that Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 app hmm.

To your question, Zero doesn't appear to have map that 4 and 5 had.

I forgot how hard the batting centre was. Can't raise even a single yen. Any tips besides "look at Kiryu's shoulders"? It always goes by so quick. I can only get to 400万 yen but seeing as it costs 500 to play I can't make a profit. :lol

Is there a way to replay the tutorials (for combat)? Already forgot what they taught and the in-game manual doesn't seem to be 100% of what was in the tutorials (or at least missing some of the little details).

Which manual do you mean? The one where you go into the style and bring it up with Triangle? You can check all your learned moves there.

Kuze would be head of a group, a subsidiary or his own family. But it's not technically a Clan.

Dojima Family:
  • Sohei Dojima (Head of Family)
  • Kazama (Head of his own Kazama Family, and second in-charge of the Dojima Family)
  • Awano (Head of his own group/family/subsidiary and a lieutanent in the Dojima Family)
  • Kuze (Head of his own group/family/subsidiary and a lieutanent in the Dojima Family)
  • Shibusawa (Head of his own group/famiky/subsidiary and a lieutanent in the Dojima Family)

Tojo Clan:

Made up of several large families, and the smaller groups/families/subsidiaries they have.

Include:

  • Dojima Family (under which the Kazama family falls)
  • Shimano Family
and others.

And No, Yakuza 0 sadly does not have that awesome map. It does have descriptions in the notebook, accessible in the options menu.
