Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Y4 was the first title with multiple protagonists and it shows.

Each character has a good storyline but when it gets it's grip on you, it changes characters suddenly and all of that expectation is quickly gone.

The finale is amazing but having to deal with that pacing hurts the experience of the game.

Yeah, summed up my main problem perfectly, with 0 I knew I'd be back to carry on the story, whereas with 4 I can't even remember what happened with Akiyama, besides liking his character. Do they handle it better in 5, or is it worse.

I am on the last chapter
with Kiryu preparing to leave for the final battle
and I gotta say it's been a hell of a ride. And yes, like past Yakuza games I'm not surprised when there's a character going into an explanation of a plot point and *gunshot* *thud*

I agree. I love Y4, but the pacing and the timing of when you switched characters was a little weird at times.

Y0 really benefits from having only two strong protagonists. And while there are cliffhangers, they don't feel cheap or like they're coming too soon. Every story chapter thus far has been plenty substantial.

Man, the amount of (high quality) content is insane :)
Still in Chapter 7 after 70 hours.
The Real Estate and Cabaret stuff is super addictive.
Can't stop making huge amounts of money!

I should have stopped there. I didn't care for both and now I'm at chapter 10 with a lot more aggressive opponents on the streets.

On the cabaret stuff: How can I get the girls a pause or regain their life?

On the real estate: How or where can I see what I can buy? I mostly run around in the neighbourhood and try to find out on which house my character reacts so that I can buy it. There must be an easier way, right?

If you wanna give them health when the club is open, for a lot of health give the girl a gift, for a decent chunk praise them. If it's before you open for business you just have to give them a day off.

As for real estate you can either walk around with your face on a wall or just follow a guide. The building's name never got translated so it doesn't really work as intended.

Here's a great guide

Ive noticed tearing once or twice on my pro when panning really fast. Is it common on base systems?

Not sure how your getting any screen tearing on a Pro for 6, even when I was panning the camera I was getting no tearing, including inside shops etc. I played 100+ hours on the full game and got 0 screen tearing, and I played the crap out of every single mini game, side mission and explored both cities extensively. So I can only believe that was patched early on or its extremely hard to get any tearing (I spent a good 10 hours on the demo though and got no tearing there either despite looking for it).

Base console wise, yes screen tearing is far more common, especially in shops when panning the camera.

There's only two cities and one character this time, so 5's bloat doesn't look like it'll be an issue. If anything, I keep hearing it has somewhat of the opposite problem. Kamurocho is supposedly smaller, etc. The switch to a new engine supposedly taxed the devs a bit, but there's nice QoL boosts aside from better graphics, too, such as every single side story being voiced.

I can't wait for it. From what I see on GAF it seems like impressions are pretty good.

Yeah, that's the case. There is still plenty of content, but technically less than past Yakuza games. Its definitely not bloated but the move to the new engine didn't come without some sacrifices. It'll definitely be interesting to see what kind of boost we get for the next game in the series using this engine.

I just did the Passport to Pizza side story and feel like crying because it was so good. I did not know it was possible to feel such a range of joy and confusion so quickly.

Between this, Miracle Johnson, and others, are the other games' substories this incredible?

Is there any resource on the Ultimate Battles? If there's more of them like the medicine challenge it's just straight up unfun shrug.

I think the drug one is probably one of the worst. Really gotta abuse the Marlin and Breaker's spin move.

Most people don't look like Riki Takeuchi enough to pull it off.

okay, so chapter 13 (or 14? i forget) and the only kazzy subs left are disco ones, which fuuuck that, the last 2 can wait till premium game + or whatever. i know i missed a few trophies, but that's what my legendary playthrough will be for!

anything else to know? im certain the amon fight(s) will be fair & in no way frustrating, as usual

I swear the pre-fight boss splashes are some of the most pure hype inducing moments in gaming. The music, the slow-mo/pause moments as it hits. It's just perfect!

They could have us fighting a goddamn pigeon and they might actually make that seem exciting too.

The "taking off the shirt" and the slowmo clashes NEVER get old.

It's the same magic platinum games give with every boss intro.

just rewatched it, it's not that good IMO, i dunno, the rythme, the music, it's doesn't flow well to me!

can't think of anything right now but i'll rewatch some of them

Gonna be done with Nioh today, so I need something until Nier releases. Is Yakuza 0 managable until the 10th of March? And how is the game? Never played a Yakuza before but I love Japanese games if they don't go full Anime.

Yakuza is a melodramatic soap opera about gentlemen thieves, punctuated by beat-em-up ultraviolence and weird minigames where you have to dress up prostitutes. You can power through the main story in 2 weeks easy.

I wouldn't expect other games to rip the style off directly, but I wish more games would make a bigger deal of a boss fight. Especially in games that are story heavy. Any time you see one of those splashes in Yakuza you know shit is about to go down.

I must say that I have a soft spot for
Kuze's second encounter. Although it's kinda cheating because of how good his theme is, and the timing of the guitars with the splash is on point

I honestly don't know which is better, that or the fight with Lee early on in the game, he may use the generic boss theme, but that boss theme is one hell of a good theme. The best part is the cutscenes suddenly become 60fps so you know a great splash screen is coming up.

I finally decided to leave chapter 10 for good. So here's my question, the answer would be kind of a spoiler I guess but for this one I don't really mind:
Do you actually return to Kamurocho as Kiryu before the Story is over or can you only do the remaining substories and real estate stuff in post-game now? It's what kept me in this chapter for so long.

Yes. Hell, even when you're in Osaka, you can take a taxi back to Tokyo.

I agree with you. There have been a lot of cool boss fights and a lot of cool intros but the music + plus the setting+ plus the entire situation is just insanely hype.

Though the Yakuza 3 final boss is great too, but it's a combination of the build up to that point, what you had to go through to get there and the fact that the music used is the "theme" of the game. YAKUZA 3 SPOILERShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ti8tKjuByo

So much damn content, is there a New Game+ or something?
I wanna finish the game main story and then go back to beat the
5 Billionaires, Cabaret Clubs
, side missions, etc.

There is a New game + mode, a Premium Adventure mode (where you continue your savegame from the end of the story, and just do any and all side activities that you haven't done before including substories and businesses) and Legendary mode is unlocked.

Legendary mode needs to be done from a fresh save though, but it's harder AND losing a fight knocks you back to your last save instead of giving you the option to restart the fight.

Y6 is like one step forward, 2 steps back. Kinda think of it like Yakuza 3 of this next batch really.
The price of being the first Dragon Engine/PS4 only title unfortunately, but one hopes that we'll see a dramatic Y1->Y2 leap in Y7 or Y3->Y4.

I really liked Yakuza 3. :D

Everyone said it was boring but to me it felt Super Shenmue.

We all know the most hype freeze frame has to go to Yakuza 3
with the final boss fight. Mine's line to Kiryu, the overwhelming sense this might be it for Kazuma and them meeting in the air with a knee attack... amazing. Music perfectly matched the scene too.

Yakuza 3 was great, but unlike Y6, it had the "benefit" of Yakuza: Kenzan being the buffer game between the generations. And Yakuza 3 STILL had reused assets from Yakuza 1/2 which they either didn't WANT to do or COULDN'T do for Y6.

Yakuza 3 is still a damn good game though.

Yup, i have to agree, this one is pretty dope! But boy the game didn't age well, those expressionless faces during QTE, it's more funny than anything!

honestly i might not be into the series anymore if they don't bring back kiryu

Honestly I know how you feel, to me he's such a great character that no one else can replace. I mean I'm open to play other characters but Kiryu's charm and coolness is why his one of my favourite characters in any media, not just video games.

With that said I kind of want a new IP from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio now more than another Yakuza game haha.

Great minds think alike.

Just ordered this and looking forward to starting it when it arrives. One thing though, on the Giant Bomb endurance run that is ongoing, they mentioned there was porn in this... Is there? Surprised there hasn't been more fuss made, unless it's the real tame swimsuit kind of stuff.

Its just girls in skimpy outfits playing with balloons and wrestling. Its really tame.

You guessed right. Just that awkward stuff where a girl in a bikini just stares at you for 2 minutes while holding a ball.

Now Yakuza 6 might get a bit more of a fuss raised, but hey, if GTA 5 can get away with strippers and hookers even in first person then I don't think this is too bad.
My biggest disappointment with the game is that it's not really all that appearent for the most part. Save for some of the technology they use and a bunch of NPCs on the streets you would never notice the 80s setting. Even the Soundtrack is, for the most part, modern sounding.
It really hits you at the start of the game but as the game gets into it's groove, you're right that it doesn't POP as much. You wouldn't even know it was the 80s if it wasn't for the lack of cellphones and stuff.

Dat Karaoke though.
