Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

All right. Someone speak to me of my options here.

Yakuza 0- playing right now on ps4. Loving it.
Yakuza 1- apparently a remake being done for ps4, so I assume it'll come to the west?
Yakuza 2-5- Any way to play these without having to buy the old consoles? PS Now?
Yes, Yakuza 1 Remake (Kiwami) is set to release in west this summer. So, definitely play that one. As for Y2-5, unfortunately there is no way to play these without buying their respective platforms which means a PS2 for Yakuza 2 (if you even manage to find a copy. That game is super rare) and a PS3 for Y3-Y5.

While playing the older titles is recommended since they are amazing games, you would be mostly fine with the Y0 -> Kiwami -> Y6 (Q1 2018 in the west) combo. So if you don't have the means to play the older titles, rest assured that you can still play and enjoy the PS4 entries without much of a problem.

Yakuza 1 Remake "Kiwami" has already been release in Japan. It's currently being localized for the west and should be released something this summer.

Yakuza 2 is pretty hard to find on PS2 while 3-5 are all available on PS3. I don't believe they are available on PS Now.

Why didn't Kiryu just move out of the way? That was pretty dumb imo.
Or dropkick him outta of the motorcycle, that would've been epic.

Press touch pad to open up the map. You can buy health items at convenience stores. I thought you were a big Yakuza fan, how do you not know some of these basic stuff? lol
I was just being an idiot, I just figured this out lol

anyways the first encounter with mr. shakedown I just had it, is it unavoidable? it's just the game's introduction to that mothafucker?

Okay, this cabaret club explanation is giving me some Yakuza 4 PTSD. Please someone tell me this isn't as bad as managing the hostess club in that game. Please.

Kiryu just plays things too straight.

Yeah, that's an unavoidable introduction.

Can you - in broad terms - explain why that is? Will Y6 focus on a core conflict set-up at the beginning and 2-5 were more fleshin out the world and giving you larger "side"-objectives, or?

Yeah, that's an unavoidable introduction.

cool, thanks. this game has got me hooked. however i have to say i can't always keep up with all the characters/names. every single time i've played a yakuza game that's gotten me confused. i just try to follow kiryu and his thoughts throughout the game as much as possible.

There's always the notebook of character profiles you can look up in the menu if you lose track of who someone is.

All Yakuza games come with a meaty recap of previous games, and even then, the stories, even as intertwined as older characters are, are relatively stand-alone stories.

Granted, a lot of them are stories that come about due to events that occured from previous games leading up, but you don't need to know that Character X killed Character Y in Game 27 which led to Brother of Character Y seeking revenge, etc etc.

The games expect you to understand that there is already an established relationship between characters, but not necessarily that you need to intimately remember the nuances of the relationship that is built from past games.

Having seen the bits of Yakuza 6's marketing material, I'd say the single most critical 'baggage' that the game expects you to have an attachment to is the relationship between Kiryu and Haruka, which was established in Yakuza 1 and expanded upon throughout 2-5.

Personally, I would think that a bare minimum of one more game would be a good additional experience between Yakuza Kiwami and Y6, ( just to get one game with Kiryu/Haruka's relationship explored ) but it's fine to jump from 1->6 as well. Just assume there's like a 8-10 year timeskip or something.

that's definitely gonna be helpful but it's just the thing about yakuza literally - i don't always understand the dynamics of this gang-ranking and who is superior to who and what not, that's gets me a lot too. not enough for the game's story to lose its captivity on me but just something that i've always been disappointed in myself to never understand about these games.

Quick question, I've been avoiding this thread for spoilers so sorry if it's already answered. Does this game allow you to free-roam to clean up after the story is finished? I assume due to character swapping, certain things become locked out eventually?

Goddamn, that ending for Chapter 6. This series' acting is phenomenal. That scene only solidified it for me yet again.

I like the story of zero which is more mature. I heard the story is getting goofier with yakuza 4 and 5, will I still like these stories?

The story in 4 is really good, 5 is double the length of Zero about (45 hrs) and I think it has some pacing issues. I don't think either main story is goofy.

Whoever localizes this game is amazing. Keep up the great work.

Well, Nightengale beat me to it. While the relationships grow during each game and characters experience different things, the main plot of each game is largely self contained. You'll get more out of the characters if you've played the past entries but the stories are almost always completely understandable even if you have just jumped to that entry without knowing much about the series.

And as Nightengale said, most games have recaps as well, so they will bring you up to speed.
It's easier and more fun. You also make bank for 3 mins of work
It plays similar to those Diner Dash games on mobile.
I'm about to start my first night. Hopefully you guys are right.

I don't know if the game will lock you out of the side contents or not, during later chapters. But even if it does, you can clear out the rest of side-stories and mini-games in the Premium Adventure mode, which will be unlocked after beating the game. You can also switch between protags in that mode.

How do I get back home to change my clothes?
You can't right now. You can only change outfits after beating the main story.

Bowling: how can I get a strike every time?

I always move to the right about 3 steps. Then try to get the angle between the middle and the first front right pin. I get a strike almost every time.

Basically at this angle is where you want the ball to go

No way to play Y2-Y5 without the hardware. If you can't play it, check my explanation below.

All Yakuza games are self-contained story that share a number of characters between each chapter. Even newcomers can understand the stories even if they didn't knew the characters before since their relations are well explained.

Yakuza 6 starts where Yakuza 5 left off. Just the initial cutscenes for Yakuza 6 are very, very long but they are good for newcomers and veteran players alike. It explains well the context of when the game starts and, from there, it's a story of it's own.

Yakuza 6 also has recaps videos for Y0-Y5 if I am not mistaken.

After you finish the story, there's premium adventure mode which is a mode where you can do all the side stuff without worrying about the story.

Would any size ball work?

Second heaviest is better, the pink one. Go 100% strength on the throw too.

Probably, as I am typing this, you got the turkey.

Well, you guys were right. That was a lot more fun than Yakuza 4's hostess stuff. And thank God for that. I don't think I could've handle another one of those side-activities.

Oh shit, I think I just got good at the Crane game, just got 2 of the dolls that girl wanted in a row on the first try.
When there was only one of the dolls in a stupid fucking position I went and asked the dude to change the prizes, and every time there would be like 5 or 6 of them haha. Fairly easy friendship quest.

You guys know that substory with the cop who wants to search you? First couple of times he stopped me I gave him pocket tissues, but eventually I had a broken shotgun in my inventory and I gave it to him.

Well, I guess a broken shotgun would be safe in a way lol.

I wanted to give him a pistol at some point but didn't dare cause I find him too rarely as it is. Gotta get those friendship points for sure every time I see him.

Finished the game tonight. Really enjoyed it. Story was great! Ending was a bit abrupt though
/s. I enjoyed the long ending series of cutscenes a lot. Was important for closing everything off for me. Glad that we at least got to see a bit of Kazama, after he was such a focal point in the story.
.

Not sure how much of the side content I'll go back to do. But there are some sub stories I still want to check out for sure. Game was so good that Kiwami this summer is a lock for me!

The
escort part at the end of chapter 5
was pretty intense. I was expecting it to be kinda annoying, but thankfully everything went as smoothly as possible.

I gave him a pistol and the meter still went up, it's somewhat amusing because somehow Kiryu convinces him it's safe.

I'm an hour or two in. It just feels like I'm running around a low budget environment getting into fist fights. Is this what this game is about? The plot is starting to unfold but I'm just wondering where the hell this game is going in terms of gameplay and stuff. I bought it because of the glowing praise but I'm kinda hoping there's more here to the main gameplay.

If you go to Serena after
fighting your way out of the Tojo HQ, you get optional dialogue with Reina explaining to her what happened.

The combat is very simple at the beginning. As you unlock more styles and moves it'll become much more enjoyable. Also, there will be tons of side contents (mini-games & sub-stories) once the environment opens up a little bit. But at its core, the game is an action/brawler so fighting is what you do the most in this game.

Edit: I actually made a little combat related gif a few pages back to show how you can mess around in fights later on. Now bear mind that I haven't unlocked all the moves for all styles (hell, I haven't unlocked all the moves for even one of style yet) and I'm just messing around and testing things without much experience. And yet, even I can do some fun things like this.

As I said, the combat opens-up as you go further.

The game doesn't open up until early in Chapter 2, when you can stumble upon a variety of funny and/or touching sidequests, have various activities to do, etc.

I wouldn't call it a low budget environment, there's a lot of attention to detail around every corner, it's not the same repeated house everywhere, and the two districts aren't as big as some other open worlds but there's something to do at every few doors instead of every few blocks.

Early on however, you are funnelled in corridors because they force you along certain paths in the first missions. It is very linear, very cinematic heavy a start, with very few moves unlocked from the get go, only one of the 6 battle styles, nothing available around the world... So yes, it is a very slow start.

Most of the time I spent the past few days playing this game are nothing like the first hour for example. I haven't seen a cinematic in a long time, I've been having a lot of fun just doing a bunch of different things around town, and the only thing still present are the fights, but they're much more fun now with the variety of moves I can do.

Just unlocked the breaker style for Majima. The animations for this are amazing lmao. And I love how effective it is against a crowd of enemies.

Yeah, breaker style is fucking amazing for crowd control. Cannot wait to unlock heat moves for it and make it my main style
