Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

So majima is just hanging out at the park in the top right of the map asking me to let him know if I think of a way he can surprise me, what the hell am I supposed to do here? Anything? Or do i just have to continue the story?

Will side quests disappear if I advance the story?

They aren't missable but certain ones can only be done at certain times (like ones where Haruka is with you, do those asap if you want them done before the main story is finished).

If you miss any of those specific ones, you can do it after the game is done in Premium Adventure iirc.

If you're worried, once you get enough CPs, get the trouble finder from the Clown dude, bob at the bottom left hand of the map and equip it. The map will then show you what substories are available as you walk around the map.

So I really want to play Yakuza, but I'm wondering if I should start with 0 or Kiwami. I have read that Kiwami is a bit shorter, so I'm thinking it might be a better intro point for me. However I have no clue. Are the gameplay mechanics more refined in Kiwami?

Nope. Though they may disappear for certain sections of story, you can always go back and finish them, either at the "point of no return" (the game prompts you) or after the main story is done.

Sweet, thanks. I just wanted to continue the story and see if that jumpstarts my still-broken majima system, but didn't want to risk ruining all my active quests.

Only issue I find with Tiger is that it requires strictish timing. I've gotten hit a lot when trying to pull it off. It did however help me with the final Colosseum tournament with that one guy who keeps appearing and is impossible to grab. (though he can still combo when you do it so it's more like Tiger -> Evade/Sidestep/roll away, repeat til dead)

Also when I was learning to use it on Breaker Majima encounter. He ends up not attacking me for over 20 seconds until I get bored and attack him so I didn't get much practice there lol.

Still when you get the timing down, it's so OP.

Its definitely something that takes getting used to using, but believe me the timing is way more relaxed compared to the original PS2 release, that required pixel perfect precision in order to land it, barely ever ended up using it because of that fact but as the series has gone on the execution of the move has gotten easier. And once the timing clicks you basically become invincible!

No, play Zero. It's better than Kiwami and a better place to start.

Play Zero first. It's the best starting point and the better experience. It's the first game in the story and sets you up perfectly for Kiwami. Kiwami is a game from 2005 with a fresh coat of paint, whilst still great with updates, Zero has more content and is worth playing. Zero is definitely longer but if you've never played Yakuza it's the perfect game to play first.

Alright guys thanks!

I'll pick up Zero soon!

I finished Yakuza 0 this morning before immediately diving into this (only really played these two Yakuza games)

Man, having Y0 first really, really enhances the experience for me.

Chapter 13, did all substories except Pocket Racing, MesuKing (it's trash) and coliseum, maxed out all Body, Soul & Technique abilities, got to rank S in Majima Everywhere...

39% completion.

If the completion system stays the same I doubt I'll ever platinum a Yakuza game

Just unlocked Godspeed for rush style, this is amazing holy shit.

Anyone know where I can get some brass knucks?
I know, right? And if you are fast in building your heat, you can actually activate "Time for Destruction" on top of that!

As for knuckles, I think I bought one from the weapon dealer in west park.

When I fight Majima in Mad Dog of Shimano mode, what am I missing to execute the Kiwami heat moves when he glows red? I switch to dragon stance, and get no prompt to execute a move.

Oddly enough, the dragon kiwami move is one of the last things you unlock from the Dragon board :/

I recommend doing the Komaki training as soon as possible to get the Sumo Slap and mitigate all these easily, as it's a heat move that only requires some distance between the enemy and you, and nothing else.

I don't know if I'm missing something or if this is a bug, but I'm at the finale and Majima has not left the goddamn park once. I'm only maxed out at Rank E and haven't gotten any new emails or phone calls. I've fought officer Majima, found him under the giant cone, and bowled with him. I have the email saying he's at Shine(which he's not at), but that's it.

This is really frustrating because I want to slap the shit out of him some more and unlock more Dragon moves, but I'm thinking of just going for the ending already and saving it for a potential replay.

I'm only missing Dragon's Slow Burn before the final showdown with Majima. I'm guessing it unlocks by triggering all Majima interruptions, right? I'm missing breaker, anyone knows his spawn point?

Edit: Found him, he spawns in the street above the champion's district on the map.

Fallout and the Yakuza IPs are two franchises that have sidequests that can pull at my heartstrings like they only can.

The substory of the old man who mistakes Kiryu for
his own son
is good stuff.

These games, man. I can't put my finger to it but they're just so nostalgic to me.

Finally digging into Kiwami today. Is it just me or is this way harder than Yakuza 0? I can't tell if I'm just as rusty as Kiryu is or what, except I played TWO Yakuza games this year already (0 and 5) and I couldn't have possibly forgotten this much this quickly? The
Shimano boss fight
in chapter 3 or 4 felt like shit, I couldn't think of any good ways to counter and dodging/guarding only sort of worked so eventually I just resorted to button-mashing and chugging medicine. I'm not super awesome at these games but it felt a little early for me to be doing that. And even normal trash mobs can occasionally put me on my ass. I wonder if I just haven't leveled up enough, or if I need to go find those Yakuza 0 fighting tips videos again to refresh my skills.

Kiwami's weird because the shit that's been held over from the original Yakuza 1 is clearly dated in its social implications/commentary and very obviously from a bygone era in game stories, but the new stuff that's been added is very modern and progressive and so refreshing. The stuff that you mentioned is all original Yakuza 1 shit.

But then there's the new Kiwami shit. Rina's entire substory is amazing, filled with social commentary on how backwards Japan is regarding same-sex marriage and how harmful gender roles are. There's also a substory with a transwoman who never gets mocked or misgendered and isn't used for lulz (she also flirts with Kiryu, who never gets upset or offended or disgusted).

For what it's worth, Kiryu never raises a hand to any of his children ever again in the series (EDIT: unless
Daigo
counts but that's kind of a special exception lmao and Kiryu doesn't start throwing around the paternal feels shit at him until the end of 6 anyway), nor to any other women ever again. Yakuza 1 is just... old. That's really all it is. And it's kind of a losing battle to critique it with a modern perspective on storytelling in games.

I don't know that that's totally fair; we revisit and recontextualize old movies and music all the time. Yes, Kiwami's source material is of a different time, and we need to remember that games were a lot worse back then. But I don't know that that means it should be immune from criticism, especially when Sega is re-releasing it in the modern day for modern audiences. "It's better now" is maybe an okay defense for the franchise as a whole, but I can see why someone would want to give Kiwami a miss regardless.

Actually, even setting aside the regressive/progressive schism between the old and new content, so far I've found the new content to just be better written overall. Most of the substories I've run into so far are pretty bare-bones scenarios (people want to rough you or someone else up for money, Kiryu says no, fight; person needs a thing, Kiryu gets thing, reward). Meanwhile the Pocket Circuit Fighter stuff is already my favourite thing in the game and I just started that substory. You can really see how the substories have evolved over the years from basic reward pots to full storylines with recurring characters.

Another day of playing the game doing nothing but subquests and fighting Majima, lol.

That was me for the most part, but I did advance the story a chapter or two (reached Chapter 9).

I was mostly in the Cabaret Clubs, getting the two girls' affections up.

I've encountered Majima quite a bit today.

The only thing with the Substories (most of them anyway) are just "You! You've done something I don't like or blah, blah, blah, etc... Let's fight!" There's still quite a few good ones, but they definitely feel mostly lacking compared to 0.

Anyone knows how to trigger the final showdown with Majima? Is it story based? I'm in chapter 11 but I already have all the other Dragon abilities.

Edit: Ah, he just calls you randomly.

So did I screw up a quest? I'm doing substory 50 where I have to find the presents for the little girl to give to the boy she likes. Pocket Fighter tells me about a limited edition car, but I lost the race. Am I stuck giving the girl one of the other presents? I'm assuming giving the car is the best option...

so the thing about Yakuza games is I feel like Sega doesn't really do much between installments to improve the blemishes of the previous, because they reuse assets so much.

My gameplay complaints for Kiwami are a lot of the same in 0. Getting stuck onto objects, moving around the inventory, not understanding where certain things are happening, etc.

It doesn't take away my incentive from playing the game but it's a little annoying how little effort Sega puts on to fix things. And it looks like 6 & Kiwami 2 will have these issues too. The only difference being a new graphics engine
Yeah, the "Gotta go fast" CP rewards in the Adventure category prolong your stamina, and the last one gives you infinite sprinting.
oh, sweet!! It's too bad I'm taking too long to get my stats up, by the time I get unlimited sprint I'll be at like the end
